Twenty years out of Chiliomodi: 1000mods take Cheat Death round Britain
The Greek heavy psych trio have spent two years almost entirely on the road behind their fifth album, Cheat Death, and finish the 2026 cycle with nine shows in Ireland and the UK between 20 and 29 November.
A village, a pun and a van
1000mods formed in 2006 in Chiliomodi, a village in Greece whose name supplied the joke in theirs: the Greek word for a thousand is chilia. The band spent their first years releasing short records themselves — the EP Blank Reality in 2007, Liquid Sleep and The Woodrose Effect in 2009, and a split with the German band Wight on Fat & Holy Records in 2010 — while building a reputation in Athens that had little to do with the Greek rock mainstream.
The first full-length, Super Van Vacation, arrived in 2011 on the German label Kozmik Artifactz, and it still shapes how the band are heard: long, unhurried riff pieces played on old amplifiers, with a low end that sits closer to Blue Cheer than to anything contemporary. The title has outlived the record. The band's touring vehicle is referred to as the Supervan in their own announcements, and the song remains the usual last word of a headline set.
Chiliomodi is not a token detail. The band went back there on 12 September 2025 for a hometown show they announced in July as a small, deliberate warm-up before the heavy autumn of touring that followed.
Five albums, none of them a repeat
Vultures followed in 2014 on The Lab Records, and Repeated Exposure To… in 2016 — the first album issued through the band's own imprint, Ouga Booga and the Mighty Oug Recordings, set up in 2015. That self-sufficiency is now the organising principle of the whole operation: the label, a record shop in Athens, and a touring schedule that drummer Labros G. has described as leaving almost no downtime, with life on tour reduced to the venue, the backstage, the petrol station and the hotel.
Youth of Dissent in 2020 brought in the Seattle producer Matt Bayles, who had worked with heavier and more angular bands than the stoner-rock circuit usually reaches for, and the record tightened the band's songwriting without thinning the sound. Reviewing their most recent album, The Obelisk made the point that 1000mods have never put out the same album twice, and that this remains true five records in.
Labros G. has put it more plainly: every album is a snapshot of the era the band is living in.
Cheat Death, made by three
In April 2024 the founding guitarist Giannis S. left for personal reasons, on good terms, leaving Dani G. on bass and lead vocals, Giorgos T. on guitar and vocals and Labros G. on drums. Cheat Death was finished as a trio and released on 8 November 2024 through Ouga Booga and the Mighty Oug Recordings, with Ripple Music handling the United States. Bayles returned to produce, engineer and mix; Brad Boatright mastered it.
It runs ten tracks across roughly an hour, opening with Overthrown and closing with the ten-minute Grey, Green Blues. Giorgos T. played every guitar part on the record and took on more of the lyric writing than before, drawing on Camus's The Myth of Sisyphus and on Nietzsche, and the arrangements reach further out than the band's earlier work: cello from Nikos Veliotis, organ and keys from Jiomy Amaranth, guest vocals from Amie Makris and from Apollonia Xylouris of Frenzee, and a semantron — the struck wooden plank used in Orthodox monasteries — played by Panos Z.
Reviewers read it as the band's heaviest and most varied record, with a streak of Eighties post-punk and thrash in among the Sabbath lineage. Writing for The Sleeping Shaman, Matthew Williams called it an album of great variety that takes the listener on a twisting and turning journey, and singled out Götzen Hammer, the track carrying Xylouris's vocal, as the one built for a crowd. Live, the band have kept two guitars, filling the second slot with friends including Marios Samaris and Yannis, formerly of Lord 13 and Space Slavery.
Two years on the road behind one record
The touring cycle for Cheat Death has been unusually long. January 2025 brought a seventeen-day run through nine Balkan countries. March 2025 took in Spain — Apolo 2 in Barcelona on the 15th, Nazca in Madrid on the 16th, Stage Live in Bilbao on the 20th. From 24 November 2025 the band were special guests on Clutch's European and UK tour, which began in Copenhagen and worked through Bristol Beacon on 15 December, the O2 Academies in Birmingham and Glasgow on the 17th and 18th, Manchester Academy on the 19th and the Roundhouse in London on the 20th — by some distance the largest British rooms they have played.
They returned home on 7 March 2026 for a headline show at Floyd on Pireos Street in Athens, tickets at €17 to €20, with Drunk Jackals opening. The summer was festivals: Desertfest Belgium on 5 May, SonicBlast at Âncora in Portugal in early August, Blue Moon at Strombad Cottbus in Germany, where they played on 1 August, and Keep It Low in Munich on 9 and 10 October.
On 31 March 2026 the band announced the autumn leg, titled Give Me My Medicine, with the French instrumental band Grim Rhythm as guests on most dates. Their own announcement was characteristically brief: the Supervan was hitting the European roads again, spreading madness and loudness. September and October covered Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Where they stand in November 2026
The band spent 2026 putting their back catalogue back in order rather than adding to it. A remastered Super Van Vacation appeared on 29 September 2026, fifteen years after the original, alongside a remastered Repeated Exposure To… There has been no new studio album announced since Cheat Death.
The forward calendar is already filling. On 29 October 2026 Desertfest Berlin named 1000mods in its second wave for 14 to 16 May 2027, on a bill with Kylesa, Windhand and Brutus.
Immediately ahead are nine shows in Ireland and the UK, running from Whelan's in Dublin on 20 November through Voodoo in Belfast on the 21st, Dolan's Warehouse in Limerick on the 22nd, Rebellion in Manchester on the 24th, Slay in Glasgow on the 25th, the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds on the 26th, Rescue Rooms in Nottingham on the 27th, the Thekla in Bristol on the 28th and The Garage in London on the 29th. After the Clutch arenas and academies of last December, this is a deliberate return to rooms holding a few hundred people.
The set as it stands
The current show is built from the whole catalogue rather than the new record. At the Trabendo in Paris on 28 September 2026 the band played about ninety minutes, opening with Electric Carve and Claws and finishing with El Rollito and Vidage as an encore, taking in Road to Burn, Loose, Overthrown, Above 179, Götzen Hammer, the title track, Speedhead, Low and Into the Spell along the way. Only a handful of those come from Cheat Death.
The festival version is tighter. At Blue Moon on 1 August 2026 they ran twelve songs in a fixed arc — Electric Carve, Road to Burn, Götzen Hammer, Overthrown, Low, Loose, Speedhead, Claws, Into the Spell, El Rollito, Vidage and Super Van Vacation. The home-town version is the opposite: the Athens show in March ran twenty-four songs, seventeen in the main set and seven more in an encore that included two Black Sabbath covers, Electric Funeral and Wicked World, with Orchid played in from tape.
The French reviewer at the Trabendo also noted a familiar figure on stage right and wondered whether Giannis S. had come back for the tour, guitar in hand. The band have not made an announcement either way.
The show, now
A 1000mods headline show in 2026 runs about ninety minutes and is drawn from twenty years of records rather than from the newest one: at the Trabendo in Paris on 28 September 2026 they opened with Electric Carve and Claws, moved through Road to Burn, Loose, Overthrown, Above 179, Götzen Hammer, Cheat Death, Speedhead, Low and Into the Spell, and came back for El Rollito and Vidage, finishing around 22:30. Festival sets are shorter and more fixed — twelve songs at Blue Moon in Cottbus on 1 August 2026, ending with Super Van Vacation — while the March 2026 home-town show at Floyd in Athens stretched to twenty-four songs with an encore containing two Black Sabbath covers. There is no production to speak of: four musicians, vintage amplification turned up, and a sound the Paris reviewer described as fatty and heavy, with the crowd slamming and the occasional plastic cup crossing the room while Dani G. asked whether anyone out there was still alive. Grim Rhythm, an instrumental band from France, support most dates on the autumn run; the Greek-Australian trio Frenzee, whose singer Apollonia Xylouris guests on Cheat Death, have opened several of the European shows. The nine Irish and British dates from 20 to 29 November 2026 are in venues of a few hundred capacity, from Whelan's in Dublin to The Garage in London.
