Four Guitars, One Rhapsody: How 40 Fingers Went from Trieste Clubs to a World Tour
40 Fingers are an acoustic guitar quartet from Trieste whose four-guitar arrangements of rock, pop and film music have been watched hundreds of millions of times online and endorsed by Queen. Nine years after forming, they are in the middle of a world tour that reaches the Netherlands and the United States this month, Singapore in November and Germany and Switzerland in early 2027.
Four soloists who stopped competing
The group formed in Trieste, on Italy's north-eastern edge, in 2017. Before that, each of the four was working the Italian club circuit as a solo guitarist, and by their own account they were playing to the same small rooms with little to show for it. Matteo Brenci, speaking to The Spokesman-Review in September 2023, put the decision plainly: they thought it would be a better idea to put their energy together as a group than to keep performing alone.
What made the idea unusual was that the four did not come from the same place musically. Brenci, then 32, grew up on the Beatles and Oasis and describes himself as a pop fan. Enrico Maria Milanesi, then 38, is a jazz player. Andrea Vittori, then 52, comes from rock and blues. Emanuele Grafitti, then 31, is classically trained. Brenci told the paper the group treats those differences as an asset rather than something to smooth over, and compared the line-up to a string quartet built from four guitars.
The current line-up is not quite the original one. The founding four included Marco Steffè, who appears on the group's self-titled debut album. Milanesi replaced him in October 2019, and the quartet has been stable since.
The video that changed the scale of things
The turning point was not a record but a YouTube upload. The group's four-guitar arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody, released as a single in 2019, was picked up and published by Queen on the band's official website. The group's own site puts the video at more than 11 million views on YouTube, and promoters for the current tour quote a figure above 12 million. That single endorsement still leads almost every venue listing for the quartet, and it is the reason a rock act's audience turned up to hear four acoustic guitars.
Other arrangements followed the same pattern of online reach. A Dire Straits cover passed five million views, a Disney medley three million, and a version of Vivaldi's summer storm more than a million, according to The Music Man's profile from September 2023. Their Game of Thrones and Star Wars arrangements were the pieces most often singled out in early coverage. The group's official site now lists more than 40 music videos, filmed in castles, concert halls and wine cellars rather than studios.
The numbers quoted for their total audience have kept climbing as the tour has grown. Venue pages in the Netherlands and the United States cite more than 100 million YouTube views and 350 million across social media. Promoters for the June 2026 Australian debut put the combined figure above 400 million. The figures are the promoters' own and are not audited, but the direction of travel is consistent.
Records, live albums and the guest list
The discography is thin on studio work and heavy on singles and live recordings, which suits a group whose output has always been built around video. The debut album, 40 Fingers, arrived in 2018 and contained original compositions as well as arrangements. Since then, the group has released a steady run of single arrangements: Bohemian Rhapsody and the Game of Thrones theme in 2019, The Sound of Silence, Hotel California, Africa and Tears in Heaven in 2020, Für Elise and Hallelujah in 2021, then Wish You Were Here, The Last of the Mohicans, With or Without You and Pirates of the Caribbean in 2022.
Two live albums capture the show as it has developed. Guitar Rhapsody (Live) came out in 2021. A Guitar Night (Live in Ljubljana) followed in 2024, and a full-length concert film under the same title is on the group's YouTube channel. The most recent single listed is an arrangement of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters, released in 2024.
The collaborations are what mark the group out from other cover acts online. Their official site lists Andrea Bocelli and Matteo Bocelli, Zucchero Fornaciari, the American singer Tori Kelly, and Andy Summers of The Police, with whom they revisited Bring on the Night. The group are D'Addario artists and use the company's strings, capos, tuners and cables, and the company's own page describes their repertoire as blending jazz and Latin American influences with modern classics, from Astor Piazzolla to contemporary rock.
Where they stand in September 2026
The quartet's first United States tour produced sold-out shows in Boston, New York, Washington DC and Philadelphia, according to the Latvian promoter Biļešu Serviss, which brought them to Riga in October 2024. They have been back to North America every year since. The Spokane show at the Fox Theater in September 2023 was one stop on a run that has since expanded into the American mid-west.
On 2 March 2026, Mirage News reported that the group would make their Australian debut with a five-city tour in June: His Majesty's Theatre in Perth on 4 June, HOTA on the Gold Coast on 5 June, Eatons Hill Hotel in Brisbane on 6 June, Melbourne Recital Centre on 10 June and The Concourse in Sydney on 11 June.
The current schedule, listed on Songkick under the banner of a world tour, runs to 32 upcoming concerts across five countries. In September 2026 the group play three Dutch dates: Parkstad Limburg Theater in Heerlen on 17 September, de Doelen in Rotterdam on 19 September and De Oosterpoort in Groningen on 20 September. They then cross to the United States for the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia, on 22 September, Sellersville Theater on 23 September, The Paramount in Huntington, New York, on 24 September, the Wilbur Theatre in Boston on 27 September, Blue Gate Performing Arts Center in Shipshewana, Indiana, on 29 September and the George Van Dusen Theatre in Skokie, Illinois, on 30 September. October takes in Nazareth College Arts Center in Rochester on 2 October, Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis on 5 October, Brown County Music Center in Nashville, Indiana, on 8 October and Ludlow Garage in Cincinnati on 9 October. A date at Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore follows on 3 November, and a German and Swiss leg in January and February 2027 includes Düsseldorf on 27 January. A Stuttgart listing bills the same run as The Greatest Melodies on Guitar – World Tour 2026.
What a 40 Fingers concert is now
The show is a seated theatre concert of around 90 minutes. The Heerlen listing for 17 September 2026 gives a start of 8pm and an expected finish of 9.30pm, with tickets priced from €28.50 to €58.50 across five tiers. American venues run to a similar pattern, with 7.30pm starts at the Birchmere and Brown County Music Center. No support act is listed on any of the venue pages for the current run; the quartet play the whole evening themselves.
The structure has been consistent since at least 2020. When Serbian Monitor previewed their Belgrade date at the International Guitar Art Festival that March, the programme was described as two parts: an opening section of film and pop compositions, followed by a second half of pop and rock hits arranged for four guitars. The pieces named then included Piazzolla, the Game of Thrones theme, The Last of the Mohicans and Vivaldi. The 2026 venue listings name Sultans of Swing, Africa, The Sound of Silence, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Last of the Mohicans and Libertango, alongside Star Wars, Harry Potter and Disney material and original compositions. The Dutch promoter's copy describes the fingerpicking style as the signature and mentions a visual production to go with it.
The group's own live release, A Guitar Night, recorded in Ljubljana and published in 2024, is the closest thing to a recorded setlist for anyone deciding whether to go. The 2023 Spokane preview described the arrangements of Dire Straits and the Star Wars medley as inventive and adventurous, and that remains the case for the show: four acoustic guitars, no rhythm section, no vocals, and a repertoire that most of the room already knows.
The show, now
A 40 Fingers show in 2026 is a seated theatre concert of roughly 90 minutes with no support act: the Heerlen date on 17 September runs from 8pm to an expected 9.30pm finish, with tickets from €28.50 to €58.50, and the American dates start at 7.30pm. Since at least their March 2020 Belgrade festival appearance the evening has been split in two, opening with film and pop arrangements before a second half of rock and pop hits for four guitars. Current venue listings name Sultans of Swing, Africa, The Sound of Silence, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Last of the Mohicans and Libertango, plus Star Wars, Harry Potter and Disney themes and original pieces, and the Dutch promoter describes a visual production built around the group's fingerpicking. There are four acoustic guitars on stage and nothing else: no vocals, no rhythm section. The 2024 live album A Guitar Night, recorded in Ljubljana, is the most reliable guide to what the set currently sounds like.
