Two band musicians, a Tottenham record collection and the 1994 breakbeat: how 4am Kru built a live jungle act

4am Kru are Howie and Stu, a London duo who play early-'90s jungle as a live band rather than a DJ set. A relationship-themed EP with Layla Sibelle in March 2026 and a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix in August have taken them into the busiest touring year they have had.

Musicians first, producers second

Howie and Stu were working musicians in London before they were producers. They met while touring in different bands, and jungle turned out to be the point where two otherwise unrelated sets of taste overlapped. The project that became 4am Kru grew out of that overlap in the lockdown period: two people playing early-'90s rave records at each other in a Tottenham studio, then starting to build their own. The ambition from the start was not to become DJs with a crate of reissues but to get the sound onto a stage and perform it.

What came in from those band years is audible on the records. The palette starts with early-'90s breakbeats and heavy sub-bass, but the material cut into it is drawn from slow-jam R&B, hardcore bands, off-kilter Scottish folk and classical writing — sources with nothing in common except that the same two people like all of them. Their booking agency, Earth Agency, sums the result up as 1994-flavoured jungle delivered through raucous live shows. The shorter version is that the breaks are archival and very little else is.

Embrace The Real: the records

Everything comes out on Embrace The Real Records, which the duo own. An early run of singles — High Time, Real Lo (Remix), Bristol Girls, Fire Is Our Friend — did the groundwork, and Wutt, Ribena and Pianos Raining Down followed through 2024, the last with the vocalist Jannetta.

Incognito Rhythm, the debut album, arrived on 12 September 2024. The Bandcamp edition runs to twenty tracks plus one continuous hour-long mix of the whole record, which is a plain statement about how it is meant to be taken: as a set rather than a playlist. The guest list is long and deliberately mismatched — Drama1, Darwin, Jack In Box, Pinty, Guido YZ, McDonald, Jannetta, Sir Hiss and Papa Levi all appear — and the tracks that travelled furthest out of it were Beautiful Thing, Ribena and Deepest Darkest Jungle. It was pressed as a triple vinyl set as well as sold digitally.

2025 was thinner on record, with Mr. Wolf and an Old School Lovin' remix, while the touring diary took over.

Love On The Line: a jungle EP with a plot

The current record is Love On The Line, released on 25 March 2026 on Embrace The Real and credited jointly to 4am Kru and the singer Layla Sibelle. Seven tracks — Love On The Line Intro, Rush, Places, Show A Little Love, Boy, No Good For Me and Hush Now — follow the course of a romantic relationship from start to finish, which is an unusual frame for a drum and bass release and forces the production to carry something other than momentum. The duo's own description of the brief is that each track should shake sound systems while staying true to the record's emotional core. The 12-inch pressing has sold out; the digital edition remains on Bandcamp.

Places, the Sibelle feature picked out in coverage on 29 May 2026, is the clearest example of what the EP does differently: the jungle architecture stays intact while the vocal sits in unresolved ambiguity rather than building to a release. It is a long way from Wutt, and it suggests the catalogue is widening rather than simply accumulating.

Where they stand in October 2026

The firmest marker of their current standing is the Essential Mix broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on 15 August 2026. It runs around two hours and 43 tracks, and it is remarkable mostly for how little of it is other people's music: the duo filled a slot usually used to display taste with their own catalogue and edits, opening with the Love On The Line intro and working through What Is Jungle, Deepest Darkest Jungle, Pianos Raining Down with Jannetta, Chicken Soup For The Rave with Shout Out Out Out Out, and Boomtown with Samurai Breaks.

The touring numbers have grown accordingly. Songkick logs 31 shows across 2026, with 13 still to come as of early October and 23,341 people tracking the act for alerts. The festival history behind that includes Glastonbury, Boomtown, Reading & Leeds and Boardmasters.

The autumn run is a mix of festival and headline club dates: Woodland Dance Project in Edinburgh on 3 October, O2 Academy Leeds on 9 October, Tramshed in Cardiff on 10 October, Quarters in Brighton on 16 October, The Prospect Building in Bristol on 31 October, the Forum in Digbeth, Birmingham on 13 November, Digital in Newcastle on 14 November and O2 Academy Oxford on 20 November. Between the Welsh and Sussex dates they cross to Amsterdam Dance Event for a 7.30pm to 10pm set at the Melkweg on Saturday 24 October.

What the show is

The booking is for a live act, not a DJ, and the distinction matters to how the dates are built. The ADE programme states the position bluntly: the truest way to experience the music is on a manic rave dancefloor, in what it calls timeless white heat. That means the room and the hour are part of the product. The O2 Academy Leeds show on 9 October 2026 has doors at 11.30pm, an 18-plus door policy and a 4am curfew — a late-night club billing rather than an early-evening concert, with the duo listed as the sole headline act.

The set itself is drawn from Incognito Rhythm and Love On The Line, with the vocal features that run through both records doing real work on stage rather than arriving on backing tracks alone. The Essential Mix tracklist is the best public guide to its shape: own-catalogue material, re-edited and sequenced for sustained pressure instead of peaks and troughs. The European slots are shorter and earlier than the UK club dates, which run to venue curfew.

The show, now

A 4am Kru date in late 2026 is a live performance billed as a headline club night, not a DJ booth slot. The UK autumn shows run late: O2 Academy Leeds on 9 October 2026 opened doors at 11.30pm with an 18-plus policy and a 4am curfew, and the duo were the only billed headline act, so the running time is set by the venue rather than a support-and-headliner structure. Festival and European slots are tighter and earlier — the Amsterdam Dance Event booking at the Melkweg on 24 October 2026 is a 7.30pm to 10pm window. The material comes from Incognito Rhythm and the Love On The Line EP, with the guest vocalists who appear across both records built into the arrangements; the two-hour Essential Mix broadcast on 15 August 2026 is the closest public document of how the set is sequenced, running 43 tracks of almost entirely their own productions and edits, from the Love On The Line intro through What Is Jungle, Pianos Raining Down and Deepest Darkest Jungle. The pitch, in the words of the ADE programme, is that the music only fully lands on a crowded rave floor.
