Four singles, one EP and a Saturday in Manchester: Abbie Piper's first year on record

Abbie Piper spent her teens on Cornwall's support-slot circuit with an acoustic guitar; since September 2025 she has released as a soul and R&B singer through a Sony-licensed label, and on 17 October 2026 she plays Neighbourhood Festival in Manchester — the only Piper date currently on sale.

Cornwall first, soul later

Piper grew up in Cornwall and came up the way acts from the far south-west usually do: opening for whoever was touring through. Her booking-agency listing from that period, which describes her as 17, credits her with supports for Sound of The Sirens, Sunset Sons, Hudson Taylor and Kim Churchill, and with gigs across Cornwall and London. The same listing names Half Moon Run, Foals and Matt Corby as her reference points, and notes that she had recently moved from solo acoustic shows to a three-piece band to give the material a fuller sound. That is an indie-folk CV, not a soul one.

How much of that earlier version survives in the current one is the interesting question, because the published biography she runs now points somewhere else entirely: Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse and D'Angelo, with the writing described as stripped-back storytelling set against soul-leaning melodies. Her own account puts the groundwork earlier still — at 13 she was singing with a 13-piece R&B band, which is where the confidence to front a room came from. The journey is also geographical. She is now billed as Cornwall-born and London-based, and the move coincides with the point at which she stopped being a support act and started being a release schedule.

Ten weeks that changed the arithmetic

The recorded career starts on 19 September 2025 with 'Save Your Love', co-written with Will Bloomfield. Two more followed in quick succession: 'My Truth' on 21 November 2025 and 'Better On My Own' on 25 November 2025, the latter written with Luke Grieve and David Dyson. Both of those later singles went out as small bundles rather than lone tracks, which is how 'Dressing Up To Go Nowhere' — written with Bloomfield, Dyson and Britten Newbill — reached streaming. The releases carry the same rights line throughout: FWD>> Music Limited, under exclusive licence to Sony Music Entertainment UK. For an artist with no album and no press cycle behind her, that is the most informative single fact on the metadata.

The response arrived faster than the catalogue did. Writing on 1 December 2025, The Forty-Five picked 'Better On My Own' as one of its tracks of the week and laid out the numbers: a debut single in September, and by the third single, four days before publication, more than 30,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and a date already booked for her first headline show in London. The reviewer's read on the track was that she had got hold of the vocal manner of the older soul records rather than just the sound of them, and treated the speed of the rise as earned rather than suspicious.

Three singles in ten weeks is a deliberate shape. It front-loads a streaming profile, gives a booker something to look at, and puts a first-time London headline on sale off the back of a catalogue that could be played twice inside half an hour.

Mirror Talk, released twice

The singles were collected as the 'Mirror Talk' EP on 5 December 2025, four tracks long: 'Save Your Love', 'My Truth', 'Better On My Own' and 'Dressing Up To Go Nowhere'. That version is the one that closes out her 2025.

It was superseded on 15 May 2026, when 'Mirror Talk' reappeared as a five-track EP with 'Calling' added. 'Calling' went out the same day as a standalone single with a video, and it is the most recent music she has issued. The streaming services have largely moved to showing the expanded edition, which is why her discography reads as a 2026 release even though most of its contents are from autumn 2025.

The timing of that reissue is not accidental. 15 May 2026 fell inside The Great Escape in Brighton, and Piper was on the bill that week — releasing the expanded EP into the one event in the British calendar built specifically for bookers and A&R to watch new acts.

Where she stands in October 2026

The Great Escape slot was her first appearance on a festival of that profile. The 2026 edition was the festival's twentieth, running 13–16 May across more than thirty walkable Brighton venues with upwards of 450 emerging artists; Piper played the Thursday, 14 May.

Summer took her back to Cornwall. She performed on The View stage at Boardmasters and gave an interview afterwards to Steve Muscutt for musomuso, who described the set as a mix of soul, R&B and electronic material — a wider palette than the EP suggests — and who mentioned having first come across her in a bar in Totnes roughly a decade earlier. That detail is a useful corrective to the overnight-arrival framing: the recording career is twelve months old, the gigging career is not.

The current booking is Neighbourhood Festival in Manchester on Saturday 17 October 2026. She was named in the first wave, announced in March 2026, on a bill led by KEO — who had just sold out the O2 Ritz — and Florence Road. It is a one-day, multi-venue event along the Oxford Road corridor using thirteen stages including the O2 Ritz, Gorilla and Manchester Academy, and it is back after sitting 2025 out. It is also, as of early October 2026, the only Abbie Piper date on general sale.

What is still missing from the record is criticism of the live act. There is a single-track review, a festival interview, a tracks-of-the-week pick and a set of billings; there is no published review of a full Piper show. At this stage of a career that is normal, but it means the evidence for what she does on stage is her own account and the shape of the rooms she has been booked into.

The set as it is booked now

Neighbourhood is not a show built around her, and the slot reflects that. A day pass covers all thirteen stages, the venues are within walking distance of one another, and the audience moves between them, so a first-wave name plays a short set to a crowd that partly arrives mid-song and partly leaves to catch something else. There is no support act in the conventional sense; the running order is the support act.

Her released catalogue is the five tracks on 'Mirror Talk', which is under twenty minutes of music, so any festival-length set necessarily draws on unreleased songs — the Boardmasters description of soul, R&B and electronic material points to where those are heading. The last documented configuration is a three-piece band behind her, from the earlier Cornwall listings; what she is carrying in 2026 is not publicly set out, and the Boardmasters account of an electronic element suggests it has changed since.

The show, now

The one Piper date on sale is Neighbourhood Festival in Manchester on Saturday 17 October 2026, and the format sets the terms of the performance: a single-day, multi-venue event along the Oxford Road corridor, thirteen stages including the O2 Ritz, Gorilla and Manchester Academy, all within walking distance, one wristband covering the lot. She was announced in the first wave in March 2026 on a bill topped by KEO and Florence Road, which places her in the short new-talent slots rather than a headline, with no dedicated support and an audience that circulates between stages mid-set. Her released catalogue is the five tracks of the 'Mirror Talk' EP — well under twenty minutes — so the set has to lean on unreleased material; the account of her Boardmasters appearance on The View stage earlier in 2026 describes soul, R&B and electronic elements together, broader than the EP's soul-with-guitars framing. The last documented band setup is a three-piece behind her, from her Cornwall-era listings, and no current line-up has been published. No full review of a Piper show has appeared in print, so the live reputation at this point rests on festival bookings, the Boardmasters interview and a single-of-the-week notice rather than on anyone's write-up of the room.
