Aborted at thirty-one: a bass-less four-piece, nine songs a night, and a line-up rebuilt mid-flight
Sven de Caluwé has been the only permanent member of Aborted since 1995, and in 2026 the Belgian death metal band is touring North America as a four-piece with no bassist, a drummer hired in 2025, and a twelfth album that remains their most ambitious.
Waregem, 1995, and a name picked for the record racks
Aborted were formed in Waregem, Belgium, in 1995 by the vocalist Sven de Caluwé, who remains the only constant member across three decades. The name was a commercial calculation rather than a provocation: de Caluwé has said the band was called Aborted in the hope their CDs would sit at the front of the A section in record shops. The first line-up was entirely Belgian — de Caluwé, the bassist Koen Verstraete, the drummer Steven Logie and the guitarists Niek Verstraete and Christophe Herreman.
The debut album, The Purity of Perversion, arrived in 1999 on Listenable Records, and the band's early identity was grindcore volume married to death metal detail. AllMusic characterises the approach as grindcore savagery alongside carefully built death metal technicality, and the earliest records are usually filed as deathgrind rather than death metal proper. Later material has drawn in deathcore phrasing, which is part of why the band sits comfortably on bills with much younger American acts.
What the band has never had is stability below the microphone. Guitarists have come and gone in cycles — Mendel bij de Leij and Danny Tunker among them through the 2010s — and the present roster is spread across three countries: de Caluwé in Belgium, Ian Jekelis in the United States on guitar since 2015, and Daníel Máni Konráðsson of Ophidian I in Iceland on guitar since 2022.
Twelve albums, three labels
Aborted have released twelve studio albums, six EPs and one live DVD. The run from The Archaic Abattoir through Global Flatline and Retrogore to TerrorVision tracked the band's move from Listenable to Century Media and gave them the songs that still anchor a set — material from all three of those records appeared in the 2025 and 2026 live sets. The eleventh album, ManiaCult, came out in September 2021 and was the last of the Century Media era.
The move to Nuclear Blast came next, announced with the single Infinite Terror, and it coincided with the arrival of Konráðsson on second guitar. For a band whose catalogue had grown dense and increasingly clean-sounding across the 2010s, the label change functioned as a reset rather than a reinvention: the writing stayed recognisably Aborted, but the production budget and the distribution reach both went up.
Vault of Horrors
The twelfth album, Vault of Horrors, was released on 15 March 2024 through Nuclear Blast. Its organising idea was a guest vocalist on every track, which turned a death metal record into something closer to a roll-call of the band's peers, and it runs to roughly forty minutes without much slack in it.
Reviews were broadly favourable. The Moshville Times argued that the record's strength was its willingness to punctuate the speed with sections that are heavy and genuinely catchy, picking out Dreadbringer, Brotherhood of Sleep, Death Cult, Hellbound and The Golgothan, and noting the use of orchestral builds and church-organ textures to set up the heavier passages. The same review suggested Vault of Horrors would work as an entry point for listeners new to extreme metal — an unusual claim for a band twelve albums deep into a catalogue built on horror-film gore.
The album has had an unusually long live life. More than two years after release, six of its tracks were still being played in a single set, and the band has not yet followed it with a thirteenth record.
The bassist, the drummer, and a band rebuilt in public
Two departures reshaped Aborted either side of that album. In early 2024 the bassist Stefano Franceschini left to continue his education; rather than recruit a replacement, the band chose to cover the bass with backing tracks and tour as a four-piece, which is still how they play.
The second was more serious. On 16 April 2025 Aborted announced that they had parted ways with the drummer Ken Bedene, effective immediately, ending a tenure that had begun in 2010. The split followed allegations of misconduct; Bedene issued his own statement on 29 April 2025, saying he had left in order to distance the band from the matter. With a European tour imminent, Kevin Paradis, formerly of Benighted, stepped in on drums. The permanent seat went to the Belgian drummer Siebe Hermans, who has handled touring duties since 2025 and who was 24 and playing his first shows in the United States by the end of that year.
Around the same period de Caluwé kept a side project moving: Coffin Feeder, with members of Aborted and Leng Tch'e, released the single Porkchop Express featuring Julien Truchan of Benighted on 22 January 2025. Aborted's own single The Pain, Will Be Exquisite premiered on 28 January 2025, ahead of a North American run.
Where they stand in October 2026
Aborted have spent the eighteen months since the drummer change almost entirely on the road, and almost entirely as a support act — a position that suits a band with a deep catalogue and no new album to sell. A North American tour headlined by Cattle Decapitation, with Frozen Soul and Tribal Gaze, was announced on 15 July 2025 and ran through to a Belasco show in Los Angeles on 20 December. An Australian run with Archspire and Organectomy was announced on 28 August 2025. On 8 January 2026 the band were confirmed for Dave Otero's Flatline Fest alongside Cattle Decapitation and Archspire.
Two tours define the current year. On 16 March 2026 it was announced that Aborted would support Shadow of Intent across Europe and the UK — fifteen dates between 25 September and 10 October 2026 through Germany, Austria, France, the UK, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands, with Disembodied Tyrant and Soreption also on the bill. Six days after that run ended, the band started a second: Nekrogoblikon's 20th-anniversary North American tour, announced on 10 June 2026, 24 dates from Phoenix on 16 October to Los Angeles on 15 November, with Signs of the Swarm and Party Cannon completing the package. At the time of writing the band are mid-way through the southern leg, having played San Antonio on 19 October and Dallas on 20 October.
No thirteenth album has been announced. The working pattern is clear enough: a record every two to three years, and continuous touring in the gap, mostly in the second or third slot on larger bills.
The set on this run
The current show is short by design and built for a room that has three other bands to get through. It is also, by now, a well-drilled machine — the same nine songs in the same order night after night, which is what a support act does when it has forty minutes and no margin for a slow start.
The show, now
On the autumn 2026 North American run Aborted play third on a four-band bill and get roughly 40 to 45 minutes: setlist.fm logs nine songs at Phoenix on 16 October, Albuquerque on 17 October and San Antonio on 19 October, with the San Antonio set running 8.30pm to 9.10pm. The running order has been identical across those dates — Dreadbringer, Retrogore, Brotherhood of Sleep, The Origin of Disease, Infinite Terror, The Shape of Hate, Death Cult, Insect Politics and a closing medley — so the 2024 album supplies the spine while Retrogore, Global Flatline and The Archaic Abattoir cover the back catalogue. They perform as a bass-less four-piece with the low end on backing tracks, and there is no staging to speak of: no props, no set dressing, just a drum riser and the band's own backdrop, which puts the weight on de Caluwé's between-song work. At the Belasco in Los Angeles on 20 December 2025, on the Cattle Decapitation tour, KNAC's reviewer described him bonding with the crowd to the point of having them do squats mid-song and bringing out Tribal Gaze's McKenna Holland for a guest spot, and singled out Hermans — then 24 and on his first American tour — along with a sound mix clean enough to keep the guitars and the kick drum separate. The recurring note in recent write-ups is energy rather than spectacle: a tight, loud, fast opening-act set that leaves the room warm for the headliner. Nekrogoblikon, Signs of the Swarm and Party Cannon fill out the current bill; the September–October 2026 European dates had Aborted supporting Shadow of Intent with Disembodied Tyrant and Soreption.
