Riverdale, then Rimon

She was born in Tel Aviv on 23 June 1969 into a Yemenite Jewish family, and was taken to Riverdale in the Bronx at the age of two. She went through SAR Academy and Ramaz High School there, absorbing the American singer-songwriter tradition of the 1960s that still shows in how she builds a song, then came back to Israel on her own at sixteen.

Military service followed, as a singer in the Northern Command's band, and after that the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. She arrived at Rimon in October 1989. Gil Dor, a guitarist born in Holon in December 1952, had helped found the school in 1985 and was its dean of curriculum. The two began working together almost immediately, and from that point their careers ran as one thing: he arranged, produced and co-composed, she wrote and sang, and the duo format — one voice, one guitar, often nothing else — became the unit that everything larger was built out from.

The records that took her out of Israel

The first album under both names, Achinoam Nini and Gil Dor, appeared in September 1993. The international breakthrough came six months later: Noa, released in March 1994 and produced by Pat Metheny, put a Hebrew-and-English repertoire in front of an audience that had no particular reason to seek out Israeli music. What followed was a run of records made with well-known outside producers — Calling with Rupert Hine in May 1996, a self-titled album in April 1997, Blue Touches Blue with Mike Hedges in March 2000, and Now in September 2002, produced by Dor with Yoad Nevo.

The later catalogue is more self-directed and more varied. Genes & Jeans arrived in April 2008, produced by Dor. Two albums came in 2011 — Noapolis, a set of Neapolitan songs, in February, and The Israeli Songbook in March. Love Medicine followed in 2015, then Letters to Bach in 2019, a set of lyrics written to Bach pieces, and Afterallogy in 2021.

Alongside the records sit a handful of performances that fixed her public role early. In 1994 she sang Ave Maria at the Vatican for the closing event of the International Year of the Family, in front of Pope John Paul II — the first Israeli artist to perform there. In November 1995 she sang at the Tel Aviv peace rally, minutes before Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated at it. Her voice also carried the theme from Roberto Benigni's Life Is Beautiful to a very large audience. She sings in six languages and has performed in 52 countries.

A record written after 7 October

The Giver and the See, released in 2026, is her first album since Afterallogy in 2021 and the first she has made as a project separate from Dor. She has called it a watershed in her artistic path. The ten songs were co-written with the pianist and producer Ruslan Sirota, who also produced the record; the credits take in the drummers Daniel Dor, Gorden Campbell and Gary Novak, the bassists Hadrien Feraud and Mike Gurrola, and string arrangements involving the Modusica Quartet.

The whole thing was written after 7 October 2023. The title is a deliberate rewriting of the slogan "from the river to the sea": river becomes giver, sea becomes see, and the phrase is turned from a territorial claim into something about compassion, compromise and shelter. Her stated aim was to detoxify the words rather than argue with them. The songs themselves work through pain, loss and rebirth, with water running through as the organising image.

Musically the shift is the substitution at the centre of the sound. For thirty years the conversation was voice and guitar; here the piano takes that seat, and the record leans on what the keyboard can do with her phrasing that a guitar cannot. Her own account of the writing is that songs are found rather than composed, and the album treats music as an instrument of introspection and repair.

The politics are not a sideline

Her advocacy for Arab-Israeli coexistence has cost her at home and defined her abroad. She was named Israel's first FAO Goodwill Ambassador in 2003, and had already received the World Economic Forum's Crystal Award in 1998. In 2009 she represented Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest with the Arab-Israeli singer Mira Awad, performing the peace-themed duet There Must Be Another Way; it finished sixteenth. In 2023 she condemned the judicial overhaul and joined the protests against it, describing the country as being in the worst crisis of its history.

Speaking in Florence on 31 May 2025, she called for an immediate end to the war in Gaza, saying it had warped into an attack on innocent civilians and that it was not being done in her name. She argued for international diplomatic pressure rather than more weapons, and for a two-state settlement of social democracies with open borders and shared environmental work. On the artist's job in all this she was blunt: the role is to create an alternative reality. That interview was tied to Re-Imagine Peace, a free 24-hour festival she convened in Florence on 13 and 14 September 2025, bringing together musicians, speakers and groups including Combatants for Peace and Standing Together. She has also set up Noa's Ark Foundation.

Autumn 2026: a thin calendar after a full summer

The summer of 2026 was given over to taking the new album round Italy, with a German leg either side of it. The run took in Piazza Europa in La Spezia on 24 July, the Castello Sforzesco in Milan on 25 July, the Nocera Jazz Festival at the Caserma Tofano in Nocera Inferiore on 27 July, Casa del Jazz in Rome on 28 July as part of Roma Summer Fest, and Riccione Summer Jazz in Piazzale Ceccarini on 29 July. Two September dates closed it: the Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi on 4 September, inside the 26th Festival Pergolesi Spontini under the title Accordi disarmanti, and Villa La Babina at Sasso Morelli on 5 September.

Since then the diary has gone quiet. As of late September 2026 her own site's events page reads "no events at the moment", and the main listings services show her off tour with nothing scheduled — which makes any single announced date, rather than a block of them, the current state of play. The pattern is familiar for an artist who tours in seasonal bursts around European festivals, and the album is only months old, so a 2027 run is the reasonable expectation rather than a promise.
