The Chicago bedroom producer who turned the support slot into a career

Adan Diaz signed to a Los Angeles label at fifteen and has spent the years since warming up rooms for other people's headline tours — including The Linda Lindas through October 2026. A run of singles in 2026 points at a record that has not yet been announced.

Ableton, a bedroom, and a deal at fifteen

Adan Diaz is from the Chicago area, and the surname is not said the way most English speakers would guess — the artist renders it "ah-dawn", which he later used as the title of an EP. He is Mexican-American, and the bilingualism is structural rather than decorative: from the beginning he was cutting vocals in both Spanish and English and keeping whichever fitted the song.

The origin story is a lockdown one. He retreated to his bedroom with Ableton Live and, by his own account of the period, recorded something new most days, routing confusion, boredom, anger and lovesickness into tracks without any of the apparatus of a studio. The bio his venues were still circulating in autumn 2026 puts the record deal at fifteen — the Los Angeles label GODMODE — and the first single, "ripped jeans", backed with "after hours", landed in April 2020 when he was sixteen and still in high school.

That is an unusually early start, and it shaped what followed. He arrived with a catalogue already building before he had played many rooms, which is the reverse of the normal order and goes some way to explaining why the live career has been an apprenticeship served mostly in other bands' opening slots.

legroom, hyperpop detours, and the record that did the work

The breakthrough was "legroom", released about a year after the debut single and since streamed more than 30 million times. The legroom EP followed in 2021 and remains the entry point for most listeners who find him through playlists. In 2022 came IN THE CROWD AND I CAN'T SEE!, a short release on GODMODE that pushed hyperpop textures into the bedroom-pop template and yielded "SOUTH" and "PRETENTIOUS", the latter a collaboration with Heartgaze. The Luchador EP arrived in 2023, alongside standalone tracks including "bestfriends girl" and "three days".

The record that consolidated all of it was ah-dawn, released on 5 December 2024 and trailed by "shake, shake" on 13 September that year. Diaz introduced that single with a line that reads as a fair statement of intent for the whole project: "letting go should never be a crime! plug ya earbuds in feel the bass and forget about the world for a little."

ah-dawn runs seven tracks and moves further than the EP format usually allows. "jsyk" takes a post-punk guitar line and drops a hip-hop breakdown into it; "jerk x2" is closer to punk rock, built around choosing honesty over fitting in, and compresses airy guitars, fuzzy bass and a vocal hook into roughly two minutes; "the middle" treats a break-up as a funk number rather than a lament. The back half turns down: "why can't it be me" leans on piano and 1960s soft rock, and "young picasso" closes with an orchestral arrangement. Reviewing it, Pop Passion Blog put the appeal on the writing rather than the production — "his writing and his sound are unique and it connects with people on a level that you don't see very often anymore".

The touring CV

Before 2026 the live work was almost all supporting. He went out on Good Kid's North American run, made his festival debut at Lollapalooza in 2024, and has since opened for Saint Motel, LAUNDRY DAY and JAWNY. His first headline tour went out in autumn 2024, immediately after "shake, shake" and just ahead of ah-dawn.

That headline work continued into 2025 at theatre and club scale — a show at the Roxian Theatre in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania on 30 October 2025 ran to thirteen songs and opened, oddly and deliberately, with a cover of the Ghostbusters theme before the originals started. The pattern since has been to take the support slot when the room is bigger than he can fill alone, and to headline when it is not.

Where things stand in October 2026

The most consequential recent development is not a release. Diaz has entered a publishing joint venture with Supermoon Songs — the company founded by the songwriter and producer Dan Wilson, whose credits include Adele, Taylor Swift, Laufey, Jon Batiste, Joy Oladokun, Ricky Montgomery and LANY — and PULSE Music Group. He has also moved to Los Angeles, which closes the Chicago-bedroom chapter fairly definitively.

On record, 2026 has been a singles year. "annie's got a gun" appeared in 2025, "supa cool" earlier in 2026, and "girls can be the bad guy" on 17 April 2026, which remains the most recent release. There is no announced album, and nothing longer than ah-dawn has followed it — a gap of nearly two years now, during which the live catalogue has absorbed the new singles without a record to anchor them.

Critical attention has come from specialist outlets rather than the national music press, which is the usual position for an artist at this stage: a substantial streaming audience, a strong touring résumé built on other people's tickets, and no major-publication live review to point at.

The Linda Lindas run and what is left on sale

Through autumn 2026 Diaz has been part of the rotating support on The Linda Lindas' North American tour, announced in July 2026 with general tickets on sale from 17 July. The run opened on 16 September in Sacramento and closed on 5 November in Tucson, behind Gotta Get Out — the band's third album, released 28 August 2026 via Reprise/Warner, twelve tracks produced by Carlos de la Garza and featuring "Closer" with Hayley Williams of Paramore. The support rota also included The Rat Utopia Experiment, VIAL, Deux Visages and Grace Bowers.

Diaz's leg was the eastern swing in the second week of October: Montréal on the 10th, the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto on the 12th, The Intersection in Grand Rapids on the 13th, and the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland on the 14th, where he and Sabon split the openers on a bill that sold out, doors at 7pm for an 8pm start.

After that the diary thins to one confirmed appearance: SonderFest at the Echoplex in Los Angeles on 9 November 2026, a multi-artist bill that also carries Ambré, Tristan, Debbii Dawson, Jimi Somewhere, Truman Sinclair, Marinelli and thebandfriday. He played the same room on 7 June 2026 for the School's Out, ICE Out festival.

On stage

The support sets are tight and front-loaded. Toronto on 12 October 2026 ran eleven songs and opened with "run it all back" from ah-dawn rather than with the biggest track, holding "legroom" back to eighth and finishing on "annie's got a gun". The Spanish-language material is not quarantined: "difícil", "chupa" and "hasta luego" all sat in the middle of that set, next to "supa cool" and "jumping fences".

When the bill is his own, or a festival, the set stretches and the older catalogue comes back. The Echoplex festival show in June 2026 ran twelve songs and restored "the middle", "SOUTH", "luchador" and "shake, shake" to positions the support slots cut. He plays guitar throughout and fronts a full band, which changes the recorded material more than the arrangements suggest — the bedroom-produced tracks get louder and the garage-rock element in songs such as "shake, shake" and "jerk x2" comes forward.

The show, now

A 2026 Adan Diaz set is a support set, and built accordingly: eleven songs in Toronto at the Danforth Music Hall on 12 October 2026, opening on "run it all back" rather than the hit, with "legroom" placed eighth and "annie's got a gun" closing. He fronts a full band and plays guitar, and the Spanish-language tracks — "difícil", "chupa", "hasta luego" — sit in the body of the set rather than being treated as a separate section. On his own bills and at festivals it runs longer and digs back: twelve songs at the Echoplex on 7 June 2026, restoring "the middle", "SOUTH", "luchador" and "shake, shake"; thirteen at the Roxian Theatre in McKees Rocks on 30 October 2025, which opened with a cover of the Ghostbusters theme before any original material. There is no staging to speak of on the support run — he is on before the headliner, in Cleveland on 14 October 2026 sharing the opening slot with Sabon on a sold-out bill with doors at 7pm and music at 8pm. No national-press review of his own performance has appeared; the writing on him has come from smaller specialist outlets, which have consistently put the appeal on the songs and the conversational vocal delivery rather than on spectacle.
