Adelaide United: a 2003 emergency rebuild, now second-best in the country and back in Asia
Assembled in three weeks after Adelaide City quit the NSL, Adelaide United finished second in the 2025–26 A-League Men and begin the 2026–27 season in the AFC Champions League Two group stage, with Craig Goodwin back as captain and a home opener against Melbourne Victory on 8 November 2026.
Three weeks from nothing to a national-league club
Adelaide City withdrew from the National Soccer League in August 2003, and South Australia was abruptly left without a national-level club. Adelaide United was registered on 12 September 2003 — roughly three weeks later — funded by the real-estate businessman Gordon Pickard, and dropped straight into what turned out to be the NSL's final season. When the A-League replaced the NSL in 2005, United was one of its founding clubs, and it won the first premiership of the new competition in 2005–06.
That origin set the club's shape and has largely kept it. It is the only national-league club in its city, and it plays at a football-specific ground rather than renting a cricket oval or an AFL stadium. Coopers Stadium, which almost everyone who goes there still calls Hindmarsh, sits about ten minutes from the Adelaide CBD, holds 16,500 and has a roof over every seating area. Ownership has turned over more than once; since April 2023 the club has been held by Cor Adriaanse, Rob van Eck and Yu Lidong, with Ned Morris as chairman.
The record: one championship, three cups, and a run to an Asian final
The trophy cabinet is unusual for a club of its size. Beyond the 2005–06 premiership, United reached the AFC Champions League final in 2008 under a squad that was never the richest in the competition, losing 5–0 on aggregate to Gamba Osaka, and then finished fifth at the FIFA Club World Cup that December. The A-League championship itself came in 2016, in Guillermo Amor's single season in charge, with a 3–1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in the grand final.
The knockout-cup record is the stronger line on the CV. United has won the FFA Cup three times — 2014 under Josep Gombau, then 2018 and 2019 under Marco Kurz — more than any other club in the competition's history. The coaching list through those years runs John Kosmina, Gombau, Amor, Kurz and then Carl Veart, whose tenure ran from 2019–20 until 2025.
The club has also become a selling academy. Isaías made 286 appearances after arriving in 2013. Nestory Irankunda was sold to Bayern Munich for a fee reported at around A$5.7 million. Craig Goodwin, who has scored 60 goals across all competitions for the club, left for Saudi Arabia and came back.
Second place, and the Friday night it ended
The 2025–26 season was the first without Veart and the first under the Brazilian Airton Andrioli. It was also the club's best league campaign in years: second place, 43 points from 26 matches, twelve wins, seven draws, seven defeats, 46 goals scored and 36 conceded. Goodwin returned on a free transfer from Al-Wehda; the Dutch goalkeeper Joshua Smits also arrived on a free, while Ryan Tunnicliffe, Josh Cavallo and James Delianov left. Luka Jovanovic was the leading scorer with eleven goals.
Second place bought a bye into the semi-finals against Auckland FC. The first leg in Auckland on 9 May 2026 finished 1–1. Seated tickets for the second leg at Coopers Stadium were exhausted within 36 hours of going on sale, and the ground was full on Friday 15 May — a night on which Adelaide had not lost at home all season. Auckland won it 3–0: a Jake Girdwood-Reich header just before half-time from a Lachie Brook corner, a Sam Cosgrove penalty on 58 minutes, and Logan Rogerson sliding in at the far post on 86 to make the aggregate 4–1. Auckland went on to take the championship in only their second season.
The sting was in the margin. A side that had spent the regular season grinding out results conceded three at home in the one match that decided the campaign, and the Australia Cup had already gone early, with a 1–2 exit in the round of 32 on 30 July 2025.
October 2026: a reshaped squad, two exits already, and a group to win
Goodwin has the armband for 2026–27, with the Dutch centre-back Bart Vriends as vice-captain — though Vriends has been sidelined since picking up a leg injury in pre-season, confirmed in late September. Jovanovic was sold to San Jose Earthquakes and Yaya Dukuly to NK Celje. In came Mitchell Smith from Real Zaragoza, Denver Minster from Gold Coast United and Jacob Brazete on a free, while Malual Nichola went to Adelaide City on loan for their Australian Championship campaign in early October. The Spanish creator Juan Muñiz remains the side's main source of invention in the final third.
Two competitions are already gone. Second place in the league earned a place in the AFC Champions League Elite preliminary stage, and United lost that 0–2 at home to Công An Hà Nội on 11 August 2026, dropping into the second-tier Champions League Two. The Australia Cup brought another round-of-32 exit, 1–2 to South Melbourne on 30 July 2026 — a National Premier Leagues club knocking out the A-League runners-up.
Asia has gone better. The Group F opener on 17 September 2026 at Hindmarsh was a 3–0 win over Hong Kong's Tai Po, with Ethan Alagich scoring on 19 minutes and Muñiz and Goodwin adding goals on 48 and 75. The group also contains Lion City Sailors and BG Pathum United, with matchdays running through to early December. Pre-season has been patchy rather than convincing: 5–0 against The Cove and 2–0 against Playford City in July, a 0–2 defeat by Perth Glory at Hay Park in Bunbury in late September, then a 3–1 win over the same opponent at Northam in early October through Crawford, Burkitt and Riak, followed by a free-entry friendly against Adelaide City on 8 October. On the women's side, Adriana Taranto was named captain for 2026–27, with the Jamaican international defender Tianna Harris — the club's first senior Jamaican signing — as her vice-captain.
A night at Hindmarsh
The matchday is a conventional ninety minutes plus stoppages either side of a fifteen-minute interval, but the venue does a lot of the work. Coopers Stadium is small, fully roofed and tight to the pitch, which keeps noise in rather than letting it drift the way it does at the big multi-purpose bowls elsewhere in the league. The Red Army supporters' group drives the singing; away fans are generally given the lower tier of the South Stand, with bigger allocations for derbies and cup ties. There is no train station: buses 115, 117 and 118 serve the ground, and most drivers use the Entertainment Centre car park or Bonython Park.
Crowds track the fixture closely. The 2025–26 league average was 11,073, with a high of 14,784 against Melbourne Victory on 27 December 2025 and a low of 7,343 against Macarthur on 30 January 2026. Auckland's own account of the semi-final described a hostile, sold-out ground that their performance silenced, which is a fair description of both halves of the experience — the place is loud until the result turns, and honest about it when it does.
The season in front of them
The 2026–27 Isuzu UTE A-League is the fiftieth season of national men's football in Australia and the twenty-second of the A-League, running from 16 October 2026 to early June 2027. Twelve clubs play a 22-match home-and-away schedule plus four extra rounds, for 26 matches each, with the top six reaching the finals.
Adelaide's scheduled round-one home game against Brisbane Roar on Sunday 18 October has been moved under the APL's fixture-change policy to Tuesday 15 December 2026, kicking off at 7pm ACDT at Coopers Stadium. That makes the first home night of the season the Original Rivalry against Melbourne Victory in round four, on Sunday 8 November 2026 — a fixture the two clubs have now contested close to eighty times. The Champions League Two group runs in parallel from mid-October, which gives Andrioli a congested autumn and a thinner squad than the one that finished second.
The show, now
A fixture at Coopers Stadium is ninety minutes plus stoppages either side of a fifteen-minute interval, in a 16,500-capacity football-specific ground with a roof over every seating area and the stands close to the touchlines, which keeps the sound in. The Red Army leads the singing; visiting fans are usually placed in the lower tier of the South Stand, with larger allocations for the Melbourne Victory derby and cup ties. Getting there means buses 115, 117 or 118 from a CBD about ten minutes away, or parking at the Entertainment Centre or Bonython Park — there is no station. Attendance depends heavily on the opponent: the 2025–26 league average was 11,073, peaking at 14,784 against Melbourne Victory on 27 December 2025 and bottoming out at 7,343 against Macarthur on 30 January 2026, while seated tickets for the May semi-final second leg sold out within 36 hours. Auckland FC's report on that 15 May 2026 match described a hostile, sold-out Coopers Stadium that their 3–0 win silenced. The 2026–27 home programme now opens with Melbourne Victory on Sunday 8 November 2026 after the Brisbane Roar fixture was pushed to Tuesday 15 December at 7pm ACDT, with AFC Champions League Two group matches at the same ground from mid-October through to December.
