Seven years, one unfinished album: Agent Fresco start the third chapter
The Reykjavík four-piece stopped playing and stopped recording in 2019, leaving a third album abandoned in 2020. In 2026 they came back to European festival stages — still with no new record out, but with new songs beginning to appear in the set.
Reykjavík, 2008
Agent Fresco formed in Reykjavík in 2008 and won Músíktilraunir, Iceland's band competition, in their first year. The debut EP Lightbulb Universe took a Kraumur Award, and at the 2009 Icelandic Music Awards the group was named best new artist. The line-up that won those prizes is the line-up still on stage: Arnór Dan Arnarson on vocals and keyboards, Þórarinn Guðnason on guitar, piano and programming, Vignir Rafn Hilmarsson on bass and upright bass, and Hrafnkell Örn Guðjónsson on drums and percussion.
What they played did not sit comfortably in any of the boxes available. The songwriting is pop in shape — verses, choruses, hooks a listener can hum back after one pass — but the rhythm section counts in figures borrowed from math rock, and the guitars move between clean arpeggios and something much heavier inside a single bar. The first full-length, A Long Time Listening, arrived in 2010. Then the band went quiet for five years.
Destrier and the awards it won
The second album, Destrier, came in 2015 on Long Branch Records, and the label pushed Dark Water out ahead of it as the first new Agent Fresco music in half a decade, with a video following on 15 May. See Hell, Wait For Me and Howls followed the same year. The record did what the debut had not: it travelled. Destrier pulled the band out of Iceland and onto European bills, and it is still the album a set is built from.
At the 2016 Icelandic Music Awards, Destrier won rock album of the year and Arnór Dan was named male singer of the year. Eleven years on, it remains the most recent Agent Fresco album, which is the single most important fact about where the band stands — everything since has been live work, side work, and an album that would not finish.
The singer's other work
Arnór Dan's voice has been busier than his band. He sang on four tracks of Ólafur Arnalds' 2013 album For Now I Am Winter, and the two also wrote So Close for the ITV drama Broadchurch in 2013 — a song held back until 2015, when it appeared alongside So Far. The Broadchurch score won a BAFTA. He has also recorded with Yoko Kanno for the anime Zankyou no Terror, and with the Icelandic duo Hugar.
That work matters here for a practical reason. Through the years when Agent Fresco played nothing at all, the voice at the centre of the band stayed in circulation on other people's records, which is part of why a return in 2026 found an audience already waiting rather than one that had to be rebuilt from nothing.
The album that would not close
Speaking at ArcTanGent in August 2026, Arnór Dan was direct about why the band vanished. A third album, then titled The Quiet, was being finished in 2020 and was not finished. "Things were absolutely crashing around me, and I was trying to put that into the album instead of just taking care of myself," he said. The record was shelved and the band stopped.
What filled the seven years was ordinary life and other people's projects. Three of the four members became fathers. Arnór Dan wrote and collaborated outside the band, including music for a play and for a television pilot, and it was that outside work that pointed back: "It's been years now. Collaborating and writing with other people, doing music for a play and for a pilot, helped me see: yeah, that's it, let's get back to that third chapter, put everything we've learned these last seven years into that album." On whether the band still wants to play, he was blunt — "We absolutely love it!" — and clear that the 2026 shows were about reconnecting with the songs rather than chasing a market.
The 2026 return
The comeback became public on 30 October 2025, when ArcTanGent announced the first 37 acts for its 19–22 August 2026 edition at Fernhill Farm near Bristol. Agent Fresco were on that list, among a bill that included Igorrr, Chat Pile and Alcest, with Heck reforming for a decade of Instructions and Humanfly playing their first show in thirteen years.
The run itself was short and entirely festivals. Fekete Zaj at Mátra Kemping Sástó in Mátrafüred, Hungary, on 1 August 2026 came first. ArcTanGent followed on 20 August. Be Prog! My Friend at the Poble Espanyol in Barcelona took a 17:10 slot on 25 September, and Euroblast at the Essigfabrik in Cologne closed the year on 27 September — the one date still on sale as this is written. No headline tour of their own has been announced.
The UK reaction was warm and slightly surprised. Distorted Sound, noting that it had been seven years since the band last played in Britain, called the set a "splendid time" and singled out Arnór Dan as "ever-energetic and instantly likeable". When The Horn Blows rated it above the band's earlier appearance that month and pointed at the vocal range as the thing few other bands could match. Reviewers agreed on the same two poles: heavy, tightly counted playing underneath, and a high, exposed voice on top.
Where this actually stands
The honest position is unresolved. The third album is being worked on and, by the band's own account in August 2026, is closer than it has been since 2020 — but there is no announced title, no release date, and no label statement. What exists publicly is a handful of new songs aired to festival crowds and Distorted Sound's guess that it "won't be another decade" before more arrives.
For anyone deciding whether to buy the remaining ticket, the relevant point is that this is a band playing a fifty-to-sixty-minute festival set drawn overwhelmingly from an album released in 2015, with a small amount of unreleased material attached. That is a narrower proposition than a full reunion tour, and it is also the only way to hear these four play at the moment.
The show, now
A show in 2026 means a festival slot, not a headline night, so there is no support act and no production of the band's own. At ArcTanGent on 20 August they played 16:45 to 17:35 and closed the Thursday afternoon with nine songs: Howls, Pyre, Wait for Me, See Hell, Bemoan, Implosions, Dark Water, Eyes of a Cloud Catcher and The Autumn Red — all four of the 2015 singles included. Barcelona's Be Prog! My Friend gave them a full hour, 17:10 to 18:10 on 25 September, and Cologne's Euroblast closes the run on 27 September. The staging is four musicians and their instruments; reviewers wrote about the playing and the voice rather than lights or screens, with Arnór Dan working the front of the stage and the rhythm section carrying the shifts in metre. Distorted Sound reported that the bulk of the time was spent on Destrier material "but with a hint of new material being shown to the ATG faithful", and both UK reviews framed it as a welcome return after seven years away rather than a nostalgia exercise.
