The tape machine caught fire: Alex Amen's long way round to a first record
A Texas pianist who quit film school after one semester, lost his first band and spent roughly three years building wooden boats on an island in Puget Sound. His debut album arrived on ATO in June 2026, and he has spent this autumn playing it through North American clubs as special guest on Dana and Alden's Papa's Boat tour.
Piano at four, guitar after Nirvana
Amen grew up in Texas and began piano lessons at the age of four, studying with the same Houston jazz pianist until the end of high school. Guitar came in mid-adolescence, after he found Nirvana and Neil Young. At eighteen he moved to California to enrol in film school, with the stated intention of making rock-climbing documentaries, and left after a single semester to work on music full time.
What followed was less a career plan than a living arrangement. He moved into a historic commune in Anaheim and formed his first band there in 2017, a psychedelic folk-rock group called American Slang. He has described the house as belonging to a professor who bought it in the mid-1960s: "We'd have these big communal meals every day and debate art and God and food and politics." The band did not last, but the habit of writing inside a shared household did.
Three years on Vashon Island
After American Slang dissolved, Amen moved to Vashon Island in Puget Sound and stayed for about three years, taking up mycology, mountaineering, poetry and wooden boat building before heading back to California. That period is not a biographical footnote; it is the raw material of the catalogue. His first release, the 2025 EP The Zorthian Tapes, was self-produced at Zorthian Ranch. The video for "Diamonds", the lead single from the album that followed, splices together his climbing, the boatbuilding on Vashon and footage from a 2025 sailing trip from Washington up into Canada.
The songwriting carries the same geography. Of the second single, "California Blues", he said: "'California Blues' is a song I wrote years before I ever lived in California that somehow expressed the things I felt living there years later." He framed the song as being about "the balance between excitement and isolation one can face when they chase their dreams out West".
Sun of Amen
Sun of Amen came out on 12 June 2026 through ATO Records. Amen produced it himself and Jonny Bell, who has worked with Cage the Elephant and Chicano Batman, engineered; part of it was cut at Valentine Recording Studios in Los Angeles. ATO lists eleven songs, and the record runs just under forty minutes. The method was deliberately analogue, and Amen has been candid about what that cost: "With this album, we were meticulous about creating something high-quality while recording in a more traditional way, which has its own challenges — older gear is temperamental, so sometimes we'd have to break for three hours because the tape machine caught on fire."
The playing comes from a mix of his own long-standing band and session musicians. Tommy de Bourbon, who has played pedal steel in Lana Del Rey's touring band, appears across the record, including on "Cabin by the Sea"; the Grammy-nominated bassist Billy Mohler also features. Reviewers have consistently noted how little is put in front of the voice: the arrangements lean on guitar, with pedal steel, banjo, piano, strings and percussion brought in and taken away again rather than layered up.
Reception has been warm rather than contested. Flyctory scored it 4.1 out of 5 and singled out "Her Spirit Wanders", noting a sound that reaches back to the 1960s and 1970s and praising the closing "Lonely People" as the strongest piece of writing on the album. Scummy Water Tower gave it 4.5 out of 5 and called it "a gorgeous full-length debut". ATO's own announcement quotes American Songwriter on the record's "transportive quality" and the "sense of nostalgia for the '70s folk scene", and Saving Country Music describing it as "folk country at its finest". A second full-length was completed during the Sun of Amen sessions; no release date has been announced for it.
Where he stands this autumn
The festival circuit got there before the album did. Amen played Austin City Limits in 2025, where he was flagged as an "Artist You Can't Miss", and the 2026 run took in WXPN's NON-COMMvention, Green River Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival and End of the Road at Salisbury over 3–6 September, alongside appearances at Newport Folk, Iceland Airwaves, Pitchfork's London and Paris editions and Outside Lands. Some 2026 dates were booked alongside Kurt Vile and the Violators. On Saturday 3 October 2026 he played an 11am set on the Polo Field at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park — the slot given to acts the programmers expect people to turn up early for.
His first run as a headliner was short and recent: five dates between 10 and 15 August 2026, opening at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle and finishing at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles on the 15th, billed as "Alex Amen with Grass" with the Los Angeles rock band Love Fiend opening. That show sold out. He is booked worldwide outside the EU by Ground Control Touring, through agents Timmy Hefner and Andrew Stocker, and the agency calendar already runs to April 2027, including Treefort Music Fest in Boise over 31 March to 4 April and the Bluebird Music Festival.
The Papa's Boat run
Since early October, Amen has been the special guest on Papa's Boat, the tour behind the new album by Dana and Alden, a jazz duo from Eugene, Oregon who recorded it with Malcolm Catto in London in March 2025. It is a rooms-of-a-few-hundred run that worked its way out of the Midwest, through Ontario and Quebec, across the Northeast and down the Atlantic coast into Florida. Confirmed stops include Higher Ground in South Burlington on 22 October, Space Ballroom in Hamden on the 25th, The Atlantis in Washington on the 29th, the Grey Eagle in Asheville on the 31st and New World Music Hall in Tampa on 5 November.
The set is sized for a support slot. At Lee's Palace in Toronto on Monday 19 October he played eight songs: "Please Don't Tell Me You Love Me", "Peaches", "California Blues", "Cabin By The Sea", "This Love of Mine", "Bosque", "Hello Old Man" and an unreleased "I'm Alone No Longer" to close — which is to say he is already testing material from the finished second record in front of other people's audiences rather than filling the time with album tracks.
The staging is plain by design. These are standing-room club dates with doors an hour before the music, all-ages, and tickets in the mid-twenties in dollars; the Asheville show ran doors at 7pm, stage at 8pm, at $27.06. Full written reviews of the autumn shows are thin on the ground so far, which is normal for a first album cycle in support slots; what the recordings and the reviews of them point to is a show that puts a voice and a guitar at the front and uses pedal steel and piano to colour rather than carry.
The show, now
Right now Amen is on the road as special guest on Dana and Alden's Papa's Boat tour, playing standing-room clubs of a few hundred capacity across the Midwest, Ontario and Quebec, the Northeast and Florida — Higher Ground in South Burlington on 22 October 2026, Space Ballroom in Hamden on the 25th, The Atlantis in Washington on the 29th, the Grey Eagle in Asheville on the 31st and New World Music Hall in Tampa on 5 November. It is a support-length set: at Lee's Palace in Toronto on Monday 19 October he played eight songs, opening with "Please Don't Tell Me You Love Me" and running through "Peaches", "California Blues", "Cabin By The Sea", "This Love of Mine", "Bosque" and "Hello Old Man" before closing on an unreleased song, "I'm Alone No Longer", from the second album he finished during the Sun of Amen sessions. Nothing about the production is elaborate: all-ages rooms, doors an hour before the music, tickets around $27 in Asheville with doors at 7pm and stage at 8pm, and arrangements that keep guitar and voice at the front while pedal steel, banjo and piano come and go — the same restraint reviewers picked out on the record, where Scummy Water Tower (4.5/5) and Flyctory (4.1/5) both credited the sparse backing for leaving the vocal exposed. His own headline shows have been scarcer and smaller: a five-date West Coast run from the Tractor Tavern in Seattle on 10 August 2026 to a sold-out Lodge Room in Los Angeles on the 15th, billed as "Alex Amen with Grass" with Love Fiend opening. Detailed press reviews of the autumn dates have yet to appear.
