Alex Sampson: thirty minutes a night, and a headline tour to fill in 2027

The 22-year-old from Atikokan, Ontario turned an America's Got Talent semifinal run into a Warner deal, a sold-out first headline tour and a viral break in 'Pretty Baby'. Right now he is the half-hour opener on Freya Skye's European dates, with his own Nonstop Flight Tour booked through April 2027.

Atikokan, fifth grade, and a decade of groundwork

Alex Darren Sampson was born on 20 January 2004 in Atikokan, a small town in north-western Ontario. He traces the whole career to a school performance in fifth grade, in front of roughly 200 other pupils: the thing he remembers is not the singing but wanting to go straight back on. His first live cover was an Owl City song, and Adam Young's writing remained the reference point he returned to — he has described Owl City's Ocean Eyes as the record he reached for regardless of mood.

By 16 he had a run of self-released singles behind him — 'Cold Shoulder', 'All That We Could Have Been', 'Stay Here' — and more than three million streams, with an EP called Let There Be Light in progress when he spoke to Pop-Culturalist in June 2020. At that point he had never played a proper tour; the ambition he named was Madison Square Garden, which is the kind of answer a 16-year-old gives before anyone has offered them a van.

The industry caught up in 2023. He signed to Warner Records and took a publishing deal with Sony/ATV the same year, and was named on People's Emerging Artists list. None of that produced an audience on its own. The audience arrived through television.

The talent-show detour

Sampson competed on the nineteenth season of America's Got Talent across summer 2024 and reached the semifinals. What he brought to the show was a deliberately backdated sound — close to 1950s and 1960s pop balladry — which prompted Howie Mandel to call him a cross between Shawn Mendes and Chris Isaak. The description stuck to him for a year and he has since moved away from it, writing in a straighter contemporary pop register.

He is candid that the format taught him stagecraft rather than songwriting. The lesson he took from it was to stop standing still and to talk to the room, which is now the most commented-on part of his live show. It is a fair trade: the retro styling was a costume, the crowd work was not.

The records that actually carry it

The recorded catalogue is still short and EP-shaped. Blurry Vision arrived on 19 January 2024, followed by Hopeless Romantic on 27 September 2024, which carried 'Pretty Baby' — the song that has done most of the work for him live and online.

Growing Pains, released on 5 June 2026, is the first project that reads as a deliberate statement rather than a collection. Eight tracks, three of them unheard before release, and by his own account the hardest material he has written to sing: he had to train to keep 'How Lucky Am I?' in its original key. That song came out of a Canadian writing cabin session with Sarah Troy Clark and a long-distance relationship. The title track is about having to be damaged in order to grow up, and 'Thank You for Loving Me' — his favourite on the EP — is addressed to his family, the people he credits with believing him before the numbers did.

'Misery' is his first single to register on a national chart, peaking at number 51 on the Canadian Hot 100 in 2026. It is a modest peak, and it is also the honest measure of where he sits: a touring artist with a devoted room-filling following rather than a radio presence.

From opening slots to a sold-out headline run

The live apprenticeship was conventional and quick. He opened for Alexander Stewart across November and December 2024, then for Jamie Miller through 2025 in North America and Europe. His first headline tour, Thank You for Loving Me, ran in early 2026 with Maryjo Young in direct support and sold out most of its dates — clubs, not theatres. He found the shift uncomfortable at first, saying it felt strange having everything be about him, and useful once he started rearranging the songs for the room.

The tour's break-out moment was engineered and then got away from him. He had wondered whether dropping a silence into a song would be funny, so he stopped mid-'Pretty Baby' in Washington, D.C. and let the crowd carry it; a fan shouted that he looked like her brother and that she was into it. The clip reached tens of millions of views on TikTok and pulled ticket demand up behind it.

Reviews from that run describe something smaller and warmer than the streaming numbers suggest. At Mercury Lounge in New York on 18 February 2026, Sampson played alone with an acoustic guitar under a disco ball to a crowd that included parents singing alongside their children; Sabrina Amoriello wrote that he sings with the emotional clarity of someone who already understands how fleeting a moment is, and called the night a noticeable leap on his earlier shows. At El Club in Detroit on 3 March 2026, with Rikki Lumi and Maryjo Young opening and most of the bill fighting illness — Maryjo had lost her voice and cut her set short — fans held pink cards over their phone torches during 'Play Pretend' and one was brought onstage to sing 'Pretty Baby'. Rachel Catherine's write-up kept coming back to the intimacy of it rather than the production.

Where he is right now

Sampson made his US festival debut at Summerfest in Milwaukee in summer 2026. On 2 June 2026 it was confirmed that he would open the third leg of Freya Skye's Stars Align Tour, a North American run from 19 September to 14 October 2026 taking in Phoenix, Austin, Houston, Nashville, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Bridgeport, Orlando and Hollywood, Florida. He has described that run as sold out throughout.

The European dates followed immediately. He is billed under Freya Skye at the 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin on 25 and 26 October 2026, then Manchester's Aviva Studios on 29 and 30 October and the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton on 1 and 2 November, with further dates in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. Songkick currently lists 49 upcoming shows across seven countries.

The next step is already on sale. The Nonstop Flight Tour, his second headline run, opens on 6 March 2027 at The Parish inside the House of Blues in Anaheim and runs through late April, with Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix, AM/FM in Dallas, Mercury Lounge in New York, the Bluebird Theater in Denver, Cafe du Nord in San Francisco and the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, plus Canadian dates including the Opera House in Toronto and the Hollywood Theatre in Vancouver. The venue sizes are worth noting: he is supporting in 2,000-plus-capacity halls in Europe and headlining 300-to-800-capacity clubs at home. That gap is the whole story of the next eighteen months.

The show, now

Two different shows are running in parallel. On the Freya Skye dates he plays a tight half-hour opening slot — at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut on 9 October 2026 his set ran 8.00pm to 8.30pm and took in nine songs, opening with 'Misery' and closing with 'Thank You for Loving Me', with 'Used to You' and 'There She Goes' in between, a cover of Miley Cyrus's 'Flowers', and three unreleased songs ('august', 'Birdseye' and 'find a new way') given to a crowd that had not come to see him. His own headline sets are longer and far looser, built from both EPs plus unreleased material, and frequently performed alone with an acoustic guitar — the Mercury Lounge show in February 2026 was a solo set under a disco ball, with Sampson moving the whole width of a small stage. Staging is minimal by design; the fixed points are the deliberate silence dropped into 'Pretty Baby' for the crowd to fill, which is where the viral TikTok moment came from, and fan-organised gestures such as the pink cards held over phone torches during 'Play Pretend' at El Club in Detroit on 3 March 2026. Support on the first headline tour came from Maryjo Young, with Rikki Lumi added on some dates. Reviewers consistently describe the effect as close-quarters rather than spectacular — Sabrina Amoriello called the Mercury Lounge night a noticeable leap on his earlier shows, and the Detroit review stressed how little distance Sampson keeps between himself and the front row even when the bill is falling apart around him.
