From skate parks to Camden: ALEXSUCKS bring Autopilot to Europe
The Los Angeles four-piece spent five years turning skate-park friendships and self-recorded demos into a Warner Records album; with Autopilot out since February 2026 and a first European run under way, they arrive in Britain in October playing rooms far smaller than their streaming numbers suggest.
Denver, skateboards and a name designed to be misread
ALEXSUCKS began with Alex Alvarez leaving Denver for Los Angeles, and the band as it now exists dates its formation to 2018, though the members themselves have been loose about the founding year — a live review from March 2026 puts it at 2021, around the point the recordings started appearing. Alvarez sings and plays guitar; the rest of the group came together through skateboarding rather than through the usual audition-and-rehearsal-room route, which is a detail the band returns to in almost every interview.
The current line-up is Alvarez, guitarist John Luther, bassist Garrett Orseno, who also works as DJ Topgun, and drummer Jonny Ransom. An earlier incarnation had Ethan Demoulin behind the kit, and in an interview from that period the members described themselves as coming from Denver, Cleveland, Seattle and Los Angeles respectively, and as skaters and punks first. Demoulin once broke a finger skating mid-tour and kept playing by strapping a splint together out of duct tape and drumsticks.
The influences they name are less obvious than the garage-rock label implies: LCD Soundsystem, Car Seat Headrest and Beck sit alongside the guitar bands. That mix explains why the records keep sliding between scrappy garage rock and something closer to dance-punk, with bass parts that want to be danced to rather than moshed to.
Angsty Teen to The Gutter
The first release was the EP Angsty Teen in 2021, a short, self-recorded set that has since drawn a few hundred thousand streams. The track that changed the arithmetic arrived in November 2021: "Talk To You" became the first ALEXSUCKS song past a million streams, and it remains a fixture of the live set five years on.
Singles followed steadily — "Lost My Way" and "Happy" in 2022, "Can We Forget" in March 2023, then "Go" and "See You In Hell". Alvarez has been plain about where the material comes from; of "Can We Forget" he said it was about the on-and-off relationship with his ex where the two kept hurting each other. That flat, unguarded register is the constant across the catalogue.
The debut album The Gutter landed in July 2023, nine tracks produced by Brendan O'Brien, a choice that gave a band still playing small clubs the same producer who had worked with acts several divisions above them. "6 Pack and Cigarettes" became their first Billboard chart entry, helped by a video built around skating and after-hours drift. The day after the album came out they sold out the Roxy in Los Angeles.
Learning the big rooms
The two years after The Gutter were spent mostly as an opening act, which is where the current show was assembled. They toured with The Black Keys and Plain White T's off the back of the album, then with Ekkstacy, played Life is Beautiful in Las Vegas, and opened for Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Forum in Los Angeles. Orseno's memory of the Las Vegas festival set — the band going at full tilt in front of a crowd that had turned up for them — is the sort of thing that reads as a turning point in hindsight.
October 2024 brought the EP Warm Beers. Together with The Gutter it has accumulated something in the region of ten million streams, a figure the band's own press has leaned on since.
In March and April 2025 they ran their first proper headline tour, nineteen stops billed as Dance Punch Cry, and sold out American venues on it. The reported detail from that run was audience behaviour rather than attendance: people knowing every word, and the same faces turning up at more than one date in different cities. Three singles came out across 2025 — "What We're Doing Here", "Flowers & Dirt", recorded with Lola Bllue, and "Worm in the Sun" — each into the millions of Spotify streams. They also played Lollapalooza.
Autopilot
The title track and lead single "Autopilot" arrived on 26 January 2026, with the album announced at the same time. Alvarez summarised the song's argument as bluntly as possible: if you don't want to shoot yourself in the foot, then don't. The album itself, nine songs again, came out on 20 February 2026 through Warner Records, alongside a video for "Flinch".
The record keeps the immediacy of The Gutter but pushes the post-punk side further forward. The title track opens on a jagged guitar figure before accelerating into a sprint carried by bass and drums; the band's own description of the album settles on indie urgency, post-punk darkness and anthemic vocals, which is fair enough as a summary of what the nine tracks do.
Reception has not been uniformly warm. A user review on Album of the Year called it good-sounding but safe and generic, while picking out "The Headache" and "Backwards" as the strongest tracks. More favourable coverage argued the opposite case — that "Flinch" showed the band becoming moodier and sharper rather than simply louder. Both readings are audible on the record; it is a tighter album than the debut and slightly less reckless for it.
Where they stand, September 2026
The headlining Autopilot US tour opened on 25 February 2026 and ran through late March, taking in The Rebel Lounge in Phoenix, House of Blues Houston, Lincoln Hall in Chicago, Market Hotel in Brooklyn and the Marquis Theater in Denver, before finishing at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on 25 March with Dogma Society opening.
Since then the band has moved to Europe for what is a genuinely small run by the standards of their streaming figures. The current leg opens at Sala Villanos in Madrid on 23 September 2026 and continues to Rotown in Rotterdam on 27 September, Mikropol in Berlin on 29 September and MTC in Cologne on 4 October, with Casablanca Drivers supporting on one of the dates. Three of those shows are listed as on sale.
The two British dates close the run: Camden in London on 6 October and Night & Day in Manchester on 7 October, both venues holding a few hundred people. For a band that filled the El Rey in March, these are deliberately undersized rooms, and on the evidence of the American shows that suits the way they play.
The show, now
A 2026 ALEXSUCKS headline set runs short and hard — the Seattle date on 22 March 2026 was scheduled 9.05pm to 10.00pm, roughly fifty-five minutes, and the Sacramento show two nights later ran to around fourteen songs. The shape is front-loaded and mixes eras: "Hate Me If You Want", the title track "Autopilot", "Flowers & Dirt", "Talk to You", "Can We Forget", "What're We Doing Here", "Backwards", "The Gutter", "Whatever I Want", "Fish Don't Fly", "6 Pack and Cigarettes" and "The Headache", with "Flinch" and "Worm in the Sun" also in rotation. Staging is minimal to the point of absence. A review of the 9 March 2026 show at The Atlantis in Washington DC described the room turning into a basement punk party, with continuous jumping, moshing and crowd-surfing, Alvarez leaning into the front rows to sing and repeatedly checking that people were all right, layers of clothing coming off as the set went on, Orseno crowd-surfing while still playing bass, and Alvarez going into the crowd himself during the closing songs. The one engineered moment is "What're We Doing Here", where the lights drop and the room fills with raised phones. The reviewer's verdict was that the band are loose, spontaneous and unpolished by choice rather than by accident, and are worth seeing live. Afterwards the members stayed out front handing over autographs, drumsticks and copies of the music. Support has varied by territory: Dogma Society opened the Los Angeles finale in March, and Casablanca Drivers appear on one date of the current European run.
