From a rooftop in Barranquilla to a club circuit: Aria Vega's first year as a headliner
Aria Vega spent six years getting nowhere in particular, then turned Barranquilla's Carnival into a pop identity and a No. 1 record. In October 2026 she is touring the United States for the first time, with a Latin Grammy nomination pending and no album out.
Barranquilla, and not as decoration
Aria Vega was born Mariana Padilla Pérez Campo Vega in Barranquilla, on Colombia's Caribbean coast, and is 29. The Carnival is family business rather than a theme she adopted: her grandparents took part in it, her grandmother worked as a fashion designer, and her mother danced the garabato while pregnant with her. A grandfather left her a vinyl collection of Joe Arroyo, vallenato and salsa records, which she has described as the thing that put that DNA in her.
The training was formal. She studied ballet, flamenco and Colombian folklore at the Teatro Amira de la Rosa in Barranquilla, where early performances drew on Gabriel García Márquez. She sings as a mezzo-soprano and names Shakira, Carlos Vives, Joe Arroyo and Totó la Momposina as the four reference points — two of them costeños of the same stock, one of them from her own city.
That background matters because the project she has built since is explicitly regional rather than pan-Latin. Her working term for it is Costeñita Core, and she has pushed back on reading it as a look. Flower earrings, colour, sandals and tropical prints are the surface; the substance she lists is the food, the slang, the humour, the way people dress, the Carnival, the heat, the drums, the confidence, and the ability to find joy when life is chaotic. She has also refused to tie costeña identity to one appearance or one way of behaving.
Six years of not breaking through
Vega reached the late stages of Idol Colombia at 17. At 23 she left Barranquilla for Bogotá and signed with Warner Music México. The deal did not produce a breakthrough; the relationship ended around the pandemic and she carried on independently. By her own count her professional career starts in 2020, which makes the recognition that arrived in 2026 something that took six years.
She has been direct about the timing. Asked in early October 2026 about the Latin Grammy nomination, she called it a graduation as an artist, said it was both motivation and a responsibility, and added that she was grateful it came when it did because at any earlier point she would have felt very lost.
The pivot came in 2025 with "Costeñita", a collaboration with Dekko, which gave the movement its name and started the social-media trend around coastal food, dress and dances that she has been building on since.
The records that did the work
"Chévere" arrived in January 2026 and went from a song to a phenomenon the following month, when the Medellín artist Ryan Castro cut the premium remix. That version gave Vega her first No. 1s on Billboard's Latin Airplay and Latin Rhythm Airplay charts, and topped the Billboard Colombia Hot 100. The scale around it was unusual for a first hit: more than 1.7 million TikTok videos, over 50 million Spotify streams, and designation by Spotify as the Carnival 2026 song.
"TOTOTO" followed on 24 July 2026. "COMPA COLETO (uy_como)" came on 17 September 2026, produced by Sky Rompiendo and, like much of her catalogue, grown out of a TikTok snippet before it was finished as a record. It entered the Billboard Colombia Hot 100 at No. 2 and drew more than 23 million radio impressions in its first week. The earlier singles that fans still shout for — "Agua e Panela", "Abanico Sanyo", "Ay Mama (mi tiburón)", "CULE POCO (sirena_besarico_costeña)" — were all released without a label behind them.
There is still no album. She has recorded more than 30 songs across 2025 and 2026 and is cutting them down to roughly 15, and has said the work now is reduction, possibly leaving some for later. The record has been in development for about a year and no release date has been announced. A debut headline tour running ahead of a debut album is the single most exposed thing about her position.
Where she stands in October 2026
On 22 September 2026 Vega signed with Warner Music Latina in partnership with Rebeca León's Lionfish Entertainment — a return to the Warner system five years or so after the first attempt failed, this time with León's management behind it.
She is nominated for Best New Artist at the 27th Latin Grammy Awards, her first nomination and, as things stand, her only one; the ceremony is on 12 November 2026 in Las Vegas. She has also been nominated for Best New Artist at the Los40 Music Awards 2026, and at the Tu Música Urbano awards in the new female artist and afrobeat categories. On her own account she found out about the Latin Grammy nomination while she was at a spa.
On 2 October 2026 she performed at Macondo Park in Madrid as part of Es Latina, the cultural programme built around Shakira's 12-show residency there — picked for a bill assembled by the other singer from Barranquilla, whom she had not met before the event. Alongside the music she has put out a 32-piece festival capsule with Falabella, which is consistent with how much of the Costeñita Core argument is carried by clothes.
Cariavales: how the tour got its name
The live story starts at Carnival in February 2026 rather than in a venue. She played Festival Bestival in Barranquilla on 14 February, and over the same weekend premiered the "Chévere" remix with Ryan Castro from the roof of La Troja, to thousands of people filling the surrounding streets. A Barranquilla opinion column published on 18 February called that rooftop set the most memorable moment of the four-day 2026 Carnival and a coronation as a prophet in her own land. During the Batalla de Flores parade she sang from the Pasión Tiburona float alongside Carlos Vives, and the same column noted that she kept turning to sing to the crowds packed around the mini-stages rather than playing to the cameras.
She called that run of Carnival appearances her Cariavales, and the name stuck to everything after it. A Colombian leg began on 18 April 2026 and covered Barranquilla, Valledupar, Montería, Ibagué, Cúcuta, Riohacha, Medellín, Bucaramanga, Manizales, Cali and Neiva, with the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata on 30 April. Festival bookings outside Colombia came through the same year: Picnic Festival Costa Rica on 14 March, Estéreo Picnic in Bogotá on 21 March, and Festival d'été de Québec on 11 July.
The United States and Puerto Rico leg was announced on 5 August 2026, with a presale the next morning and general sale on 7 August. Her stated aim for it was to share the joy, energy and pride of Colombia's Caribbean coast and its carnavales with people elsewhere. The run opened in Atlanta on 10 October and continued through Orlando on 11 October, the Roxy in West Hollywood on 13 October, Avondale Music Hall in Chicago on 15 October, Estereo Nightclub in Indianapolis on 16 October, White Oak Music Hall's downstairs room in Houston on 17 October, Brooklyn Monarch on 23 October and Big Night Live in Boston on 25 October. These are 500-to-1,500-capacity rooms and nightclubs, not theatres.
The next confirmed step is a jump in scale: Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on 16 January 2027, on a multi-artist bill with Omar Courtz, with tickets having gone on sale on 16 October. It is the only Vega date currently on sale.
The show, now
The CARIAVALES Tour is a club show rather than a production show: general-admission standing rooms of a few hundred to around 1,500, all-ages in Houston, doors at 7pm there and an 8pm start at the Roxy in West Hollywood on 13 October 2026. No support acts are listed on the venue pages or the tour listings, and on several dates the booking sits inside a club night rather than a conventional headline bill. The material is the singles — "Chévere (premium_remix)" is the one everyone is there for, with "CULE POCO (sirena_besarico_costeña)", "TOTOTO", "Agua e Panela" and "Ay Mama (mi tiburón)" around it — and no song-level setlists from the tour have been published on setlist.fm, so the exact running order and the set length are not on the record. The staging leans on costume and dance rather than screens or scenery: the Cariavales wardrobe reworks traditional Carnaval de Barranquilla dress, including gorila and cumbia costumes, cut with modern styling, and she performs with the coastal dances the outfits belong to. There are no published reviews of the United States leg yet. The nearest thing to criticism in print is a Barranquilla opinion column of 18 February 2026, which called her rooftop set at La Troja the most memorable moment of the 2026 Carnival and singled out her habit of turning to sing directly to the crowds at the parade mini-stages. The next date on sale is a step up in scale — Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on 16 January 2027, on a shared bill with Omar Courtz.
