Nineteen houses, fifteen songs: Ashley Cooke finally puts her own name on the record

Nine years after moving to Nashville as a Belmont freshman, the Florida-raised country singer released a self-titled second album in August 2026 and is currently working through a 28-date world tour that ends at the Ryman in February.

A childhood in transit

Ashley Josephine Cooke was born on 12 June 1997 in Wisconsin and raised largely in Parkland, Florida — though "raised" undersells the mileage. By her own count she lived in nineteen different homes before she turned eighteen, and she began writing songs at eleven as a way of handling the upheaval. The shorthand she now uses for her sound, "coastal country", comes out of that split geography. As she put it around the release of her second album, "California and Florida feel like the most pivotal places that I really grew up."

At eighteen she moved to Nashville for Belmont University, won the school's Country Showcase in 2019, and left formal study to work at music full time. Early momentum came from TikTok, where her contribution to the Lay Me Down Challenge found an audience before any label did. In 2022 she signed a co-venture deal with Big Loud Records and Back Blocks Music. The first single worked to country radio under it was "Never Til Now", a duet with Brett Young promoted from May 2022; it reached No. 49 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart and was later certified gold. She made her Grand Ole Opry debut on 26 October 2022.

Twenty-four songs, and the one that broke

Her major-label debut, shot in the dark, arrived on 21 July 2023 with 24 tracks, Cooke credited as a writer on 20 of them, and guest turns from Nate Smith, Colbie Caillat, Jackson Dean and Brett Young. It was an unusually large opening statement, and critics tended to agree that the slower, more reflective material was where she was strongest rather than the uptempo songs built for the format.

The single that moved her out of the developing-artist bracket was "your place", which reached No. 2 on Country Airplay and No. 21 on Hot Country Songs, went gold, and took the 2024 CMT Music Award for Breakthrough Female Video of the Year. She was selected for iHeartRadio's On The Verge programme in 2023 and nominated for New Female Artist of the Year at the ACM Awards in consecutive years, including 2025. A feature spot on Brantley Gilbert's "Over When We're Sober" reached No. 31 on Country Airplay in 2024. Through this stretch she was mostly an opener, logging support runs with Luke Bryan, Kane Brown, Jon Pardi, Parker McCollum, Jelly Roll, Dylan Scott and Lee Brice.

ace: nine songs instead of twenty-four

The correction to the sprawl of the debut came on 14 November 2025 with ace, a nine-track project — five new songs plus the already-circulating "baby blues" — produced throughout by Dann Huff and written with Johnny Clawson, Kyle Sturrock, Emily Weisband, Seth Ennis, Joe Fox and Lori McKenna, among others. Cooke framed it as a concept record covering roughly two and a half years of her life: "This 9 song project means more to me than anything I've done thus far… Here is my heart in 9 tracks."

Its lead single, "the hell you are", went to radio as the most-added record of its week and peaked at No. 41 on Country Airplay. She played it on The Today Show on 17 November 2025. The same period produced an out-of-format collaboration with Joe Jonas, "All I Forgot".

Putting her name on it

Cooke announced her self-titled second album on 5 May 2026 and released it on 14 August via Big Loud and Back Blocks Music. Fifteen songs, all of them co-written by her, mostly produced by Dann Huff, with Liz Rose and Hillary Lindsey among the collaborators and JP Saxe singing on "man behind the glass". Her own description was "a coming of age record disguised as a relationship album", and she was blunt about the shift in confidence behind it: "I feel like this is an era where I've never felt more confident about who I am in my music."

Reviews were warm. Writing for Maximum Volume Music, Andy Thorley gave it 8/10, calling the production polished without smothering the material and singling out the sparse opener "if i'm being honest", the bright-but-bitter "high school sweetheart", the arena-scaled "excuses" and "the girl who cried wolf" as the most overtly country thing on it. The recurring theme he identified — knowing better and wanting it anyway — runs through most of the record. Sonically it ranges wider than the debut, from piano ballads to the Motown-leaning arrangement of "baby blues". Two tracks, "famous to frances" and "johnny 'n june", had been released ahead of the album as previews.

Rather than a conventional release-week promotional run, Cooke spent 14–22 August 2026 on a short acoustic pop-up tour called Cities That Made Me, presented by Surfside: Nashville on the 14th, then the Rave Penthouse in Milwaukee, Mavericks in Pleasanton, the Desert 5 Spot in Studio City, Sharkey's in Parkland, Big Top Brewing in Sarasota and the Neon Cactus in West Lafayette on the 22nd. The venues were chosen for biography rather than market size — Milwaukee as her birthplace, Parkland as the town she grew up in, the Neon Cactus as the bar where her parents met.

Where she stands in October 2026

"baby blues" went to country radio on 22 June 2026 with 70 stations in its first week, among the most-added records on Mediabase that cycle, and topped SiriusXM The Highway's Hot 30 countdown; its Billboard Country Airplay peak so far is No. 47. The official video, co-starring the comedian Matt Rife, was released on 24 September 2026. She played the Grand Ole Opry House again on 8 September.

The self-titled album is her fourth release in four and a half years, counting the independently issued Already Drank That Beer, which was reissued on 1 April 2022. She is still working theatres and clubs rather than arenas as a headliner, which is the honest measure of where she sits: a radio-viable artist with a gold No. 2 behind her and a second album good enough to argue she is more than that, touring rooms small enough that the argument has to be made nightly.

The show, now

The baby blues world tour was announced on 12 May 2026, went on general sale on 15 May and opened on 17 September at Globe Iron in Cleveland; it runs 28 dates through UK and Irish shows in January 2027 and finishes at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on 25 February 2027. These are clubs and small theatres rather than sheds — the 9:30 Club in Washington, Royale in Boston, Irving Plaza in New York, the El Rey in Los Angeles, Showbox SoDo in Seattle, Koko in London — and the sets are correspondingly tight: 13 songs at Cleveland across roughly 85 minutes, 13 songs at Boston on 19 September from 8.05pm to 9.20pm. The shape has been consistent, opening with "excuses" into "i almost do" and working through "sleepless in seattle", "swear words", "xs" and "the hell you are", with a mid-set medley of "Can't Fight the Moonlight", "Come Clean" and "Sk8er Boi" that plays to the early-2000s pop end of her audience. The fixed moment of the night is "baby blues", during which Cooke picks someone out of the crowd to sing to; fans now turn up with signs nominating their partners, and she has talked about keeping the gesture light — "I would never want to step on toes" — after one serenade in Cleveland left a girlfriend in the front row glaring at her for the rest of the show. Support rotates across the run between Timmy McKeever, McCoy Moore, Just Jayne, Aniston Pate and Hannah McFarland on select dates. One dollar from every ticket goes to The Onsite Foundation's Creatives Support Network, which funds mental health resources for songwriters.
