Piedmont Park, 1892, and a founding seat in the SEC

Auburn played its first intercollegiate football match in 1892, against Georgia at Piedmont Park in Atlanta — the fixture now billed as the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. John Heisman, whose name went on the sport's best-known individual award, coached the side from 1895 to 1899. The team competed in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1895, the Southern Conference from 1922, and took a founding seat in the Southeastern Conference when it was formed in 1932. It has not left since.

The all-time record stands at 807–481–47, a winning percentage of.622 and thirteenth among Football Bowl Subdivision programmes by total wins, with twelve unbeaten seasons. Both defining rivalries sit on the wrong side of the ledger through 2025: Alabama leads the Iron Bowl 52–37–1, Georgia leads the series that started it all 66–56–8.

Nine claimed titles, three Heismans

Auburn claims nine national championships — 1910, 1913, 1914, 1957, 1958, 1983, 1993, 2004 and 2010 — of which the Associated Press and coaches' polls account for two. The first was the 1957 team under Ralph "Shug" Jordan, who coached from 1951 to 1975 and won 176 games, more than anyone else at the school and the reason his name sits on the stadium. The second was the 2010 team under Gene Chizik. The playing surface was named for Pat Dye in 2005.

Eight conference titles have followed the 1932 founding: 1957, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1989, 2004, 2010 and 2013, along with ten Western Division titles across the divisional era that ran until 2023. Three Auburn players have won the Heisman Trophy — Pat Sullivan in 1971, Bo Jackson in 1985 and Cam Newton in 2010, the quarterback of the last team to finish the job.

The Freeze years end on 2 November 2025

Hugh Freeze went 15–19 across three seasons and was dismissed on 2 November 2025, after a defeat by Kentucky left the team 1–5 in conference play. Defensive coordinator D. J. Durkin took the remaining games. Auburn finished 5–7, 1–7 in the SEC, and lost the Iron Bowl 27–20 at home to a tenth-ranked Alabama on 29 November. The severance owed to Freeze runs past $15m.

The replacement was announced a day after the Iron Bowl. Alex Golesh, who had gone 23–15 in three seasons at South Florida, signed on 30 November 2025 for six years and $44.25m guaranteed, starting at $6.75m for his first year and escalating by $250,000 annually to an $8m base by 2031. He was on $2.5m at USF in 2025. A ninth win is worth a $1.5m bonus and a tenth another $2m; an SEC title pays $300,000, a College Football Playoff berth at least $1m.

The roster turned over accordingly: 39 transfers in, 37 out, including both 2025 quarterbacks, Jackson Arnold and Ashton Daniels. Senior Byrum Brown followed Golesh from South Florida to run the offense under first-year coordinator Joel Gordon, with Durkin staying on defense alongside co-coordinator Tim Banks. 247Sports rated the incoming transfer class thirteenth nationally; linebacker Xavier Atkins was named a preseason All-American. SEC media picked Auburn twelfth in the conference.

Four games, and one very long wait ended

The Golesh era opened on 5 September 2026 at the Aflac Kickoff Game in Atlanta, a 17–16 win over Baylor. Southern Miss were beaten 43–8 on 12 September in his first game at Jordan–Hare. Then Florida arrived on 19 September for their first visit since 2011 and won 44–39, Jadan Baugh running for 162 yards and three touchdowns. Brown threw for 271 yards and three scores on 20 of 35, but Auburn managed only 102 rushing yards from 373 in total. Golesh was blunt afterwards about the opening: "The first three drives were abysmal: three-and-out, three-and-out, three-and-out."

The homecoming fixture on 26 September produced a 21–15 win over Vanderbilt and, with it, the first home conference victory in 672 days — the previous one was the overtime win against Texas A&M on 23 November 2024. Brown found Chas Nimrod for 33 yards in the first quarter; Omar Mabson II blocked a punt that Cade Carlson recovered and carried ten yards for the second touchdown; Brown ran in a two-yard score for 21–9 in the third. It was his thirteenth consecutive game with a rushing touchdown, a run that began at South Florida.

The margins were uncomfortable. Vanderbilt outgained Auburn 311 yards to 279 and held the ball for 37 minutes 32 seconds, converting four of five fourth downs while going 4 of 17 on third. Three Brock Taylor field goals and a three-yard Sedrick Alexander run cut the lead to six midway through the fourth quarter before Jeremiah Cobb's 21-yard run and a 20-yard catch by Camden Singleton drained the clock. Vanderbilt's own account of the afternoon credited a relentless Auburn pass rush against true freshman Jared Curtis, and blamed eight accepted penalties and the special-teams collapse. Auburn travel to fourteenth-ranked Tennessee on 3 October at 3–1, 1–1 in the SEC.

A Saturday on the Plains, 2026 edition

The matchday operation was reworked for this season. Tiger Walk, the procession down Donahue Drive to the stadium, now starts two and a half hours before kickoff rather than closer to the gates opening, which pushes the crowd into a new Tiger Walk Plaza built around a mobile video board, a stage for the Tiger Tailgate Show and live music from regional performers near the Frank Thomas statue. Food trucks were added at Nichols Lawn, the Thach concourse and the Home Plate Tailgate, the neighbouring baseball ground got a red-zone-style viewing set-up and a shaded patio, the stadium's south concourse was widened by nearly twenty feet, and more than 80 per cent of concession stands moved to a grab-and-go model. An intelligent lighting and laser rig now runs through the in-stadium show, and an AI concierge called Creedo handles ticket, parking and problem reporting queries.

The Vanderbilt timetable shows how the day stacks up: car parks open at 8am, live music from 11am, the Tiger Tailgate Show at 12.15pm, gates at 12.30pm, Tiger Walk at 12.45pm, the Spirit March and Four Corners pep rally at 1.50pm, pre-game at 2.58pm, the eagle's flight at 3.01pm and a 3.15pm kickoff. The scheduled military flyover was cancelled that week because of personnel deployment. Stadium Journey scores the venue 4.14 out of 5 and marks the atmosphere a perfect five, singling out the golden eagle's descent from the upper deck after nearly 80,000 people have sung Free Bird, and the rolling of the oaks at Toomer's Corner after wins — ticker tape from 1960, toilet paper since 1972. The same review is honest about the trade-offs: high upper-deck seats where the football can feel incidental, and drinks priced around $2 above the norm.

What the rest of the autumn asks

Six home dates were scheduled for 2026 and five are gone: Southern Miss, Florida, Vanderbilt, LSU and Arkansas all sold out, leaving only Samford on 21 November at $35 a seat, or $100 for four tickets and a parking pass. Face value on the sold-out games ran from $45 for Southern Miss to $155 for Florida and $145 for LSU; season tickets sold out entirely, extending a run of 22 consecutive home sellouts. Jordan–Hare holds 88,043, a figure matched twice — the Iron Bowl in November 2023 and an Argentina–Iceland football match on 9 June 2026.

The schedule from here is unforgiving: Tennessee away on 3 October, Georgia away on 17 October, LSU at home on 24 October, Ole Miss away on 31 October, Arkansas at home on 7 November, Mississippi State away on 14 November, Samford on 21 November and the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa on 28 November, with the SEC Championship Game on 5 December. A first-year coach picked twelfth in his conference has one home league win in hand and four road trips that will settle whether the reset reads as progress.
