Aurora Matrix and the eight weeks since the Golden Beaver crown
Anton Ling's drag act went from a Woody's open stage to the first Canada's Drag Race All Stars crown on 13 August 2026, and is spending this autumn on a multi-queen Canadian revue tour.
An open stage in the Village
Anton Ling was born on 14 April 2000 in Toronto, to parents who had emigrated from China, and started performing as Aurora Matrix at the Woody's open stage while reading for a Bachelor of Fine Arts at York University. One of the people encountered on that circuit was Priyanka, who would later sit on the judging panel of the show that eventually crowned her — a detail Ling returned to in interviews after the win.
By May 2020 the act was roughly a year old and already a regular booking at Crews & Tangos and Woody's, in a city with more drag per square mile than almost anywhere in Canada. Speaking to IN Magazine that month, at the age of 20, she summarised the act in four words — "pop, dance, splits and sex" — and described wearing a cheongsam on stage as "a full circle moment", having never been permitted one at childhood celebrations. Representing Chinese heritage through drag, she said then, was the point rather than the decoration.
The years that followed were the ones every performer lost. Rather than wait them out, she worked the formats that survived: Drive 'N Queens, the drive-in drag shows staged in 2021, and then the inaugural PrideFest in Sarnia in 2022, well outside the Church-Wellesley comfort zone.
The label she could not shake
Canada's Drag Race season four put her on national television and gave her a strong edit. She took two challenge wins, including the Rusical, which is the challenge that tends to separate the trained dancers from the lip-syncers. She also landed in the bottom for Snatch Game and had to lip sync against Luna DuBois, which she won.
Then she lost the final to Venus. Runner-up is a respectable outcome and a terrible description, and it followed her around for the next three years. When she talked to NOW Toronto after the All Stars win, that was the thing she led with: the determination to return and delete the word.
Six episodes in the summer of 2026
Canada's Drag Race All Stars premiered on Crave on 9 July 2026, with international distribution on WOW Presents Plus — nine returning queens across six hour-long episodes, a $100,000 prize, and a "Golden Beaver" mechanic in which the safe queens vote anonymously to save one of the bottom contestants. The cast around her was heavy: Nearah Nuff, Jada Shada Hudson, Sami Landri, Tiffany Ann Co., Makayla Couture, Juice Boxx, Pythia and Jackie Cox.
Her run was front-loaded and then tested. Top three in the opener, wins in episodes two and three, and then the bottom three in episode four, where she faced Makayla Couture and came through. Episode five was Snatch Game, and the choice was local and risky: Toronto mayor Olivia Chow, a political impersonation on a national comedy challenge. The runway work ran on the same material as the early interviews — an "Empress of the North" look with gold dragon appliqué among them.
The finale used a multi-round Lip Sync Smackdown. She opened in a traditional Chinese dress, saw off Sami Landri to a Shania Twain track in the penultimate round, and took the crown on 13 August 2026 against Nearah Nuff to Lady Gaga's "Perfect Celebrity". Juice Boxx was voted Miss Congeniality. Reviewing the finale for Xtra on 14 August 2026, Kevin O'Keeffe called the strategy and the performance level the best of the season while registering one reservation that is worth keeping on file: "there's a feeling with Aurora that we're still seeing a version of her that she's putting on, not the real her." Six days later, in NOW Toronto, she gave her own verdict on the three-year wait — "I had proven myself to myself, to my family, to my friends, to the world" — and a blunter one about the old label, which the magazine printed with the asterisks in place.
The body of work is stage and screen, not records
There is no discography to walk through here, and pretending otherwise would misread the act. The catalogue is live numbers, television and a podcast.
The podcast is The Powder Room, co-hosted with fellow Canada's Drag Race alumni Perla and Van Goth, which took the People's Choice Award at the 2025 Canadian Podcast Awards — an award won before the All Stars crown, which is the useful ordering: the audience was already there. On screen, beyond the two Drag Race seasons, there are appearances in 1 Queen 5 Queers and, in 2024, Tongue Thai'd and Bring Back My Girls.
Out of drag, Ling is non-binary and queer and uses they/them; in drag the pronouns are she/they, which is how the Canadian press has reported it.
Standing, autumn 2026
Eight weeks after the crown, the position is the one a new winner wants and has to convert quickly: a national title, a $100,000 prize, a podcast audience, and a touring window before the next season resets the attention. The stated ambition from the August interviews is international touring, Asia in particular, and work that gives queer Asian performers someone to point at. Nothing has been announced on that front that stands up to checking.
What is bookable now is the North Stars run, a Canadian package tour hosted by Kendall Gender, with Aurora Matrix billed alongside Joey Jay, Juice Boxx, Nearah Nuff and Tiffany Ann Co. The Edmonton and Calgary stops were listed for 25 and 26 September at the Starlite Room and Commonwealth Bar & Stage, and the Park Theatre in Vancouver lists the show for Thursday 8 October, doors at 8pm and performance at 8.45pm, 18 and over.
The reasonable read on the next twelve months is that the live work, not a record or a season of television, is where the win gets cashed — and that the question hanging over it is the one Xtra raised: whether the version of Aurora Matrix that wins competitions is the one that holds a room for an hour on her own.
The show, now
The current booking is not a solo show. The North Stars is a package revue hosted by Kendall Gender, with Aurora Matrix on a bill alongside Joey Jay, Juice Boxx, Nearah Nuff and Tiffany Ann Co., plus a pair of local performers swapped in city by city — Pepper and Onika Xtravaganza on the Edmonton listing, Birthday Girl and Farrah Nuff in Calgary. Each queen takes her own numbers rather than sharing a staged production, so what Aurora Matrix brings is the Drag Race set: dance-led lip syncs with turns, drops and stunts, and at least one look that works her Chinese heritage into the costume, as the All Stars finale opening did with a traditional dress. Venues run it as a late evening club show with a tiered ticket — the Vancouver stop at the Park Theatre on Thursday 8 October lists doors at 8pm, performance at 8.45pm and an 18-plus door, with a VIP meet-and-greet tier admitted ahead of general entry. Reviews to date are of the television performances rather than the tour; Xtra rated her lip syncing the strongest of the All Stars season while questioning how much of the person comes through.
