Replicas on Canal Street: inside the unauthorised Banksy Museum
A for-profit exhibition two floors above a Canal Street shopfront holds roughly 160 full-size recreations of Banksy murals — none of them made by Banksy, and none of them approved by him. Opened in May 2024, it is still running daily while the artist himself has spent 2026 being restored in Venice, named by Reuters and hung in a new Los Angeles museum.
From a Paris pop-up to a seven-city chain
The operation behind the Canal Street rooms did not start as a museum at all. Hazis Vardar, a Brussels-born theatre owner whose earlier ventures included a stake in the Paris nightclub Le Palace, launched The World of Banksy — The Immersive Experience in Paris in June 2021. It did well enough that in 2022 it was made permanent and renamed the Banksy Museum, a title that implies an institution where there is instead a ticketed show assembled by a private company.
From there it spread. By the time the New York branch was announced, sister sites were operating in Paris, Brussels, Barcelona, Prague, Kraków, Milan and Dubai, each built on the same premise: anonymous street artists repaint Banksy's murals at full size, and the walls, kerbs and rubbish around them are fabricated to match the places the originals occupied. Vardar's argument for the method is practical rather than curatorial. Most of the source works, he has pointed out, were stolen for resale, wrecked by weather, or scrubbed off by council cleaning crews, and what survives is mostly photographs.
Two floors above a Canal Street shopfront
The New York edition opened on 15 May 2024 at 277 Canal Street, in the Oltarsh Building at the Broadway corner, occupying the second and third floors — around 15,000 square feet. At opening it held roughly 160 life-size recreations, which the organisers billed as the largest single display of Banksy-related work anywhere. Adult admission was set at $30, with $26 for students, teachers and over-60s, $21 for children aged six to twelve and for serving military, firefighters and police, and free entry below six. William Meade was named executive director.
Vardar has been consistent about the contradiction at the centre of it. "Street art belongs in the raw setting of the streets," he told trade press around the opening. "But if people can't see it, is it even art?" His complaint is that transient murals end up experienced as thumbnails: viewing them on a phone screen, he has said, is no way to register either their scale or their tone. The rooms are his answer — brick, concrete, staged debris and piped street noise, so that a stencil reads as something found rather than something hung.
What is actually on the walls
The route is thematic rather than chronological. Among the recreations are Good Doctor, from Banksy's month-long New York residency in 2010, and Hula-Hoop Girl, which appeared on a Nottingham wall in 2020. Girl With Balloon is here, as is Love Is In The Air, the Bethlehem flower-thrower. A war gallery gathers the material that has always carried the sharpest charge: Kids on Guns, with its boy and girl standing on a heap of weapons, and Stop and Search, in which a girl frisks a soldier.
A separate section is given over to the Walled Off Hotel, the nine-room property Banksy opened in Bethlehem in 2017 facing the West Bank separation barrier, and to the murals made on and around that wall — including the boy peering through it, and pieces made in the Gaza Strip. Later additions brought in works from Ukraine, where Banksy painted in 2022. Alongside the recreated murals sit reproductions of studio and print output and video of the real pieces in situ, which is the only point in the building where an actual Banksy appears, at one remove.
The curatorial line through all of it is the one Banksy has drawn himself — police, rats, children, soldiers, surveillance — and the show does not pretend to complicate it.
Unauthorised, and open about being unauthorised
Nothing in the building is sanctioned. Pest Control, the body that handles authentication for Banksy and is the only route to a certificate on a genuine work, states plainly on its site that it disowns anyone profiting from the artist's output. The museum answers by quoting Banksy's own line, "Copyright is for losers", on the wall, and by inviting litigation. Vardar has described Banksy as a pirate, said that an unauthorised project is the only honest fit for an artist who built a career outside permission, and noted that Banksy is free to sue.
That has not happened, and there are structural reasons why it may not: a claim would put an anonymous claimant in front of a court, and the mystique is part of the asset. The criticism has therefore come from elsewhere. Leila Amineddoleh, an art lawyer, has argued that lifting site-specific works indoors and charging at the door changes what they mean — a mural answering a particular wall in a particular city becomes decor. The founders of Brooklyn Street Art were blunter, calling the name funny and likening the exercise to painting Michelangelo copies on the wall of a pizza parlour.
The defence and the attack are both coherent, which is why the row has settled rather than resolved. The show preserves access to images that no longer exist; it also sells them.
Standing in late 2026
The museum's position now is best read against what has happened to Banksy elsewhere. On 17 March 2026 Reuters published an investigation identifying him as Robin Gunningham, 51, from Bristol, drawing on a 2022 trip to Ukraine, photographs circulated by former associates and a handwritten note from a New York arrest in 2000; his lawyer Mark Stephens rejected the detail and argued that anonymity is what allows the work to be made at all. On 7 May 2026 Migrant Child, the 2019 flare-holding figure cut from the facade of Palazzo San Pantalon in 2024, was unveiled near the Arsenale in Venice after a restoration funded by Banca Ifis and supervised by Federico Borgogni, then toured the canals.
Then, in September 2026, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opened in Los Angeles with twelve Banksy pieces on its fifth-floor mural gallery under 25-foot ceilings — some made in his studio, two on loan, including a Girl With Balloon presented as though jackhammered out of a London wall, and a maquette for the Flag Man that appeared at Waterloo Place in 2026. That is the awkward comparison for Canal Street: a funded institution now shows studio-sanctioned and lent work on the same conceit of the rescued wall.
New York has had the real thing too, briefly. Battle to Survive a Broken Heart, the 7,500lb bandaged-balloon section cut from a Red Hook warehouse, went on view at Brookfield Place after a decade in storage and was auctioned on 21 May 2025. The Banksy Museum's own trajectory has been quieter. It still runs seven days a week, but the hours have tightened from the 10am–8pm of its opening summer to 10am–7pm, with last admission at 6.15pm, and its ratings split by channel: 4.7 out of 5 across 49 Tripadvisor reviews against 3.7 from a smaller sample of twelve on the resale platform Tiqets.
The show, now
A visit is self-guided and runs about an hour and a quarter, with no opening act, no timed performance and no fixed start — doors are open daily from 10am to 7pm, last admission 6.15pm, and the route climbs to the second and third floors of 277 Canal Street before descending through a shop. The sequence is thematic: street recreations set into fabricated brick and concrete with staged rubbish and piped traffic noise, a war gallery holding Kids on Guns and Stop and Search, a Walled Off Hotel section covering the Bethlehem barrier and the Gaza and West Bank pieces, a room of prints and studio reproductions, and projected footage of the genuine murals in place. Girl With Balloon, Love Is In The Air, Good Doctor and Hula-Hoop Girl are the recognisable anchors. The building is wheelchair accessible and stencil workshops run alongside the exhibition, which reviewers mention having stayed for after finishing the galleries. The consistent note in visitor accounts is how uncrowded it is — easy to move through at speed or to stand in front of a single wall, which is unusual for a Manhattan attraction at this price. The consistent complaint, where it appears, is the obvious one: the labels are honest that nothing on the walls was painted by Banksy, and some visitors conclude afterwards that the staged setting flattens work that was made to argue with a specific street.
