Hamilton, then Halifax

Caplan was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, and moved east to Nova Scotia, where he has been based ever since. He picked up a guitar at 13 and started working as a singer-songwriter at 19. He enrolled at the University of King's College in Halifax but put the degree aside for music, and later went through Canada's Music Incubator artist-entrepreneur programme — an unglamorous detail that says something about how the career was actually built, which is to say date by date rather than through any single break.

He began touring in 2006, five years before there was a record to tour behind. Halifax gave him the band that still carries his name on posters, the Casual Smokers, and the East Coast scene gave him his first institutional recognition: Entertainer of the Year at the 2012 Nova Scotia Music Awards, and Roots Recording of the Year at the Hamilton Music Awards the same year, an acknowledgement from the city he had left.

Five records, and the shape they make

The debut, In the Time of the Great Remembering, came out on 20 October 2011 and won him Rising Star Recording of the Year at the 2013 East Coast Music Awards. Birds with Broken Wings followed on 18 September 2015, Old Stock on 15 June 2018, and recollection (reimagined) on 15 October 2021 — the last of these a rework of earlier material rather than a set of new songs, which turned out to be an accurate signal of where his head was at the time.

The through-line across all of them is a voice that sits lower than most of the folk repertoire expects, and an arrangement instinct that reaches for Eastern European rather than Anglo-American sources. His own biography names the well specifically: klezmer, Romani, Serbian and Moldavian forms, set against contemporary production so that clarinet lines run over synthesisers rather than fiddle and squeezebox. He describes the result as dances that remember great loss, which is a fair summary of records that put existential lyrics on top of rhythms built to move a room.

Between the albums, the touring has been relentless. His current biography counts nearly 2,000 shows across 27 countries over roughly fifteen years; Songkick's gigography logs 464 past concerts. The early expansion happened fast — South by Southwest in Austin in 2012, then Byron Bay Bluesfest and Glastonbury in 2013, alongside runs through the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Norway and the UK.

Old Stock, and what the theatre taught him

Old Stock is the record most likely to be the reason a listener knows the name, and it did not begin as a record. Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story was a stage work made with the director Christian Barry and the playwright Hannah Moscovitch for Halifax's 2b Theatre Company, following two Romanian Jewish refugees arriving in Canada in 1908. Caplan played the Wanderer, the show's narrator and band leader, performing the songs live inside the drama rather than around it.

The production travelled widely and collected the 2018 Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award. The songwriting was recognised separately: Caplan took Songwriter of the Year at the 2019 East Coast Music Awards. The 2018 album captures the score.

The experience left a mark on how he builds a show. A Caplan set has always leaned theatrical — he is billed on his own store page as a charismatic charmer and a smasher of pianos, a madman and an earnest poet — but Old Stock gave that instinct a structure to work inside, and the records since have been assembled with sequencing and transitions in mind rather than as collections of unrelated songs.

The Flood: a commission in Poland, and a record cut in half

The pandemic stopped his output. By his own account to The Coast in June 2025, the writing simply did not come back until a Polish festival invited him to perform 90 minutes of new material with a band — new meaning new, with nothing pulled from the back catalogue. He accepted, wrote to the brief, and played it.

That performance is the source of everything since. It generated enough material for two albums; he selected the songs that cohered thematically and released those as The Flood on 30 May 2025. It is a compact record — seven tracks, opening with the title song and closing on The Oracle, with The Dream, Candy & Balloons, The Main Thing, Lost & Found and Lost in between. Graham Scott shares the composing credit on the title track, and Scott, Andrew Wiseman and Peter Lutek are the collaborators named on the project.

The subject matter is climate change, inequality and authoritarianism, handled without much reassurance. Caplan's stated interest is how people find joy in anxiety-riddled circumstances; his summing-up to The Coast was that everything will turn to dust, so why worry, and that within that nihilism love is real. The second album, drawn from the remaining Poland songs, was still in progress as of that interview.

Where he stands in September 2026

The Flood has done what his records tend to do: sold steadily to an audience built in person, without much critical apparatus attached. Album of the Year still carries no professional reviews for it, only user ratings, which is a reasonable indicator of where he sits — a touring act with a European following rather than a press-cycle artist.

The touring picture across 2026 has two distinct halves. The first was a headline run through Türkiye and Europe in the spring: Istanbul on 26 March, then a continental leg that included Munich's Kranhalle on 21 April, the artheater in Cologne on 22 April and Muziekgieterij in Maastricht on 24 April.

The autumn is a different job. Caplan is out across Europe again from early October, this time in support — the dates are billed as Yaelokre shows with Caplan opening, a run that takes in Club Wintercircus in Ghent on 7 October, Melkweg in Amsterdam on 8 October, Fabrik in Hamburg on 9 October, Archa+ in Prague on 11 October, Hole 44 in Berlin on 12 October, Klub Progresja in Warsaw on 14 October, Klub Studio in Kraków on 15 October and Flex in Vienna on 17 October. Songkick currently lists 52 upcoming dates against his name across 13 countries. Taking a support slot at this stage of a fifteen-year career is a deliberate move into a younger, larger room, and it puts a Halifax klezmer-folk set in front of an audience that did not come for it.
