Twenty-one songs, no video screens: Ben Harper's long 2026 on the road
The Claremont slide player spent 2026 working small rooms with a reconstituted Innocent Criminals, sitting in with Jack Johnson at the Hollywood Bowl, and road-testing material from an eighteenth album he still has not announced.
A shop full of instruments in Claremont
Benjamin Charles Harper was born on 28 October 1969 in Pomona, California, and grew up inside the family trade: his maternal grandparents ran the Folk Music Center and Museum in Claremont, a shop and collection whose customers over the years included Leonard Cohen and Taj Mahal. He has described being taken to see Bob Marley in Burbank in 1978, aged nine, and played his first gig at twelve.
Through the 1980s he moved towards slide, eventually settling on the hollow-neck Weissenborn that became his signature instrument — played flat across the lap rather than held. In 1990 he recorded with Taj Mahal on Follow the Drinking Gourd. A 1992 record made with Tom Freund, Pleasure and Pain, circulated well enough to bring a Virgin contract.
That line has a neat recent postscript: when Harper played two nights at New York's Bowery Ballroom on 21 and 22 September 2026, Freund was the opening act.
The records that stuck
Welcome to the Cruel World arrived in 1994, but it was Fight for Your Mind in 1995 that lodged him on American college radio and in European festival bills. He marked its thirtieth anniversary on 1 August 2025 with an Instagram Live question-and-answer session about the album.
The Innocent Criminals became the working vehicle for the run that followed — The Will to Live in 1997, Burn to Shine in 1999, Diamonds on the Inside in 2003, Lifeline in 2007 — and those records still supply most of a current set. The band name has come and gone from the billing more than once; it is back on it for 2026.
The awards came from the side projects rather than the day job. There Will Be a Light, made with the Blind Boys of Alabama in 2004, took Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album at the 2005 Grammys, where Harper also won Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Get Up!, cut with the harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite in 2013, won Best Blues Album in 2014. Three wins from seven nominations.
Detours that turned into a method
The catalogue since 2009 reads as a series of deliberate side doors. Relentless7, a Texan three-piece, gave him the hard-rock pair of White Lies for Dark Times in 2009 and Give Till It's Gone in 2011. Childhood Home, in 2014, was a duet record with his mother Ellen Harper. Call It What It Is followed in 2016 and a second Musselwhite album, No Mercy in This Land, in 2018.
Winter Is for Lovers, in 2020, stripped the method back as far as it goes: Harper alone with his Monteleone lap steel, no vocals. Bloodline Maintenance followed in 2022, and Wide Open Light — the most recent studio album — on 2 June 2023.
The habit of working outside the band persists. In June 2025 he wrote original music for Hit Machine, a play that opened on 14 June at Playwrights Horizons in New York as part of the Working Theater's Stage Left festival.
Where things stand, autumn 2026
The live news of the year was announced on 4 February 2026: a world tour under the Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals name, with a presale that day and general sale on 6 February. The structure was three legs. Solo shows in Spain — Palma, Girona and Lleida — ran from 12 to 15 March. The full band opened the American spring run on 19 April at The Commonwealth Room in Salt Lake City, worked a dense Colorado stretch through Aspen, Boulder, Denver and Fort Collins, played BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach on 2 May, and finished with two nights at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall on 4 and 5 May.
Summer was European and mostly festivals: La Nuit de l'Erdre in France on 3 July, Guitare en Scène on 14 July, a solo date in Antwerp on 23 June, and a co-headline with Nile Rodgers & CHIC at Porta Ferrada in Spain on 19 August. The autumn American leg began on 14 September at The Basement East in Nashville and worked east and north — Asheville, Charlottesville, Philadelphia, New York, Asbury Park, New Haven, Pittsburgh, Detroit — before settling into a residency-length stand at Garcia's in Chicago across late September and the first week of October.
The record situation is unresolved and openly so. "Before The Rain Dried", released at the start of May 2025, is a piano ballad written for Michael Ward, the guitarist who played with the Innocent Criminals for close to two decades. Harper said the song arrived complete, "production and all"; the video was directed by Ben Pier, and KCRW made it a Today's Top Tune on 28 May 2025. It was billed then as the lead single from an eighteenth studio album, and as of this autumn that album still has no title or date.
There is at least circumstantial evidence it is being worked out on stage. At Garcia's on 2 October 2026 the encore opened with a brand-new, untitled lap steel instrumental, played immediately before "Morning Yearning".
Two guest appearances bracket the month. On 10 October Harper joined Jack Johnson at the Hollywood Bowl on the closing weekend of Johnson's Surfilmusic North American tour, playing slide and singing on "Flake" — a song he had played on for Johnson's 2001 debut Brushfire Fairytales — plus a Bob Marley & The Wailers cover. On 24 October he headlines Concerts in the Canyon at the Irvine Bowl in Laguna Beach, part of the Coast Film Festival, on a bill with Donavon Frankenreiter, G Love and Lily Meola.
Who is in the band now
The 2026 Innocent Criminals is a four-piece behind Harper, credited on his own site as Olivia Charles, Chris Joyner, Alex Painter and Darwin Johnson. Italian reviewers of the Rome show placed Charles on drums, Painter on guitar, Johnson on bass and Joyner on keyboards.
Support has rotated by region rather than by tour. Peter More opened most of the east-coast autumn dates; Mendeleyev opened at the Fox Theatre in Boulder on 25 April; Harris Harper opened the Nashville and Chicago runs; Freund took the Bowery nights.
What is booked next
November takes him to Australia and New Zealand on the Surfilmusic bill with Jack Johnson and John Butler, announced in early May 2026 as the first time the three have toured together. Harper and Butler both perform solo and acoustic; Johnson closes with his band. The run covers three nights at Brisbane's Riverstage from 6 November, three at Kings Park in Perth from 10 November, The Domain in Sydney on 14 November, two at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne on 17 and 18 November, Spark Arena in Auckland on 20 November and Waipara Winehouse on 22 November.
Beyond that, the diary already runs into 2027: São Paulo's Nubank Parque on 20 February with Johnson, Frankenreiter and G. Love; two nights in Paris billed as Steel Dreams on 18 and 19 April; and a guest slot with Johnson at London's O2 on 4 July.
The show, now
The current show is long and deliberately plain. At the Cavea of Rome's Auditorium Parco della Musica on 29 June 2026 the band played over two hours with, as Rolling Stone Italia's Luca Garrò put it, no bombastic introductions and no invasive staging — a refusal of bigger screens and effects that he read as cultural resistance. The Chicago show at Garcia's on 2 October 2026 ran 21 songs: a 17-song main set opening "Below Sea Level", "Jah Work", "Don't Give Up On Me Now" and "Ground On Down", with "Steal My Kisses" segued into "Need To Know Basis", "Faded" folded into Led Zeppelin's "Fool In The Rain" and "Amen Omen" into "Knockin' On Heaven's Door"; then a four-song encore built from a new untitled lap steel instrumental, "Morning Yearning", "Walk Away" and "Waiting On An Angel". Rooms are small by his festival standing — the Bluebird, the Aggie, the Great American Music Hall, the Bowery Ballroom — and often booked in multi-night runs. Support varies by leg: Peter More on the east coast, Harris Harper in Nashville and Chicago, Tom Freund in New York. Reviewers of the European dates described the second half as closer to a conversation than a set, ending in prolonged applause rather than a big finish. The November Australian and New Zealand dates are a different proposition: Harper plays solo and acoustic on a shared bill with Jack Johnson and John Butler.
