Two auditions and a first single

Blue begin, awkwardly, in daytime television. Lee Ryan and Antony Costa met in 1999 while auditioning for a boy band on ITV's This Morning, the same programme the four of them would return to as a 25-year-old group in September 2026. The line-up settled in London in 2000, with Simon Webbe and Duncan James completing it, and the four were pitched as something slightly harder-edged than the vocal groups then dominating British pop — closer to American R&B in production, if not always in delivery.

Their first single, "All Rise", reached number four on the UK singles chart in May 2001. It is still the song that opens the door for them, and the one that has done most of the work on social media in the years since, but it was not the immediate chart-topper the group's later reputation implies. The number ones came next.

Three albums, two consecutive chart-toppers, then nothing

The debut album All Rise arrived in 2001 and went on to four-times platinum certification in the UK. One Love followed in 2002 and Guilty in 2003, and both entered the UK albums chart at number one. Across that stretch the group were also winning the argument about credibility on other people's terms: Elton John joined them on a rerecording of "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word", and Stevie Wonder on "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours". Both remain in the set today, and Duncan James still name-checks the collaborators from the stage.

The BRIT Award for British Breakthrough Artist came in 2002. Cumulative figures put the group at around 15 million records sold worldwide and 3.6 million album certifications in the UK. Then, in late 2004, they announced a hiatus, and each member went into solo records, stage work, presenting and, in several cases, tabloid attention that outlasted the music.

Eurovision, and a long way back

The 2011 reunion had a specific job: representing the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest with "I Can". They finished eleventh with 100 points — a respectable placing by the standards of the UK's results in that era, and a curious footnote, since they were the first UK entrants since The Shadows in 1975 to arrive at the contest with more than one previous number-one single behind them.

What followed was a decade of intermittent activity rather than a clean second act. The sixth studio album, Heart & Soul, came out in October 2022, eight years after its predecessor, and did not restore them to the top of the chart. The anniversary that fell due in 2025 and 2026 gave them a reason to try something more organised than another greatest-hits circuit.

Reflections, and the best chart week since 2003

The seventh album, Reflections, was released on 9 January 2026 through Blue Blood International and Cooking Vinyl: thirteen tracks, roughly forty minutes, each song carrying a writing credit from at least one member. Hugh Goldsmith and Paul Visser, working as GoldCrush, produced around two-thirds of it. Four singles were pushed out ahead of release between September and December 2025 — "One Last Time", "Waste My Love", "Beautiful Spiritual" and "Candlelight Fades".

It entered the UK albums chart at number two, their highest-charting studio album since Guilty in 2003, and topped both the Scottish albums chart and the UK independent albums chart. Outside Britain it reached number 16 in Flanders and number 77 in Switzerland.

Reviews split. The harmonies and the writing on the more bereaved material drew praise; the recurring complaint was that the record leans on its own past, one critic describing it as thirteen variations of the same song and faulting a refusal to move on from the group's early template. Speaking to an Italian outlet in March 2026, the members traced "One Last Time" to real losses, and credited the group's survival to keeping friendship, music and their private lives in separate compartments. They also noted what the streaming figures show — catalogue tracks past 100 million plays, and an audience arriving that was not born when "All Rise" charted.

Autumn 2026: still working the record

Nine months after release, Reflections is still being promoted rather than parked. A fifth single, "You Should Know", came in September 2026, with a video shot in Dundee; the band premiered a clip of it on This Morning on 23 September 2026, the same appearance in which they discussed reaching 25 years.

The touring map for the rest of the cycle is wider than the UK leg suggested. A London date at EartH falls on 9 October 2026, followed by Dubai Millennium Amphitheatre on 25 October. November is almost entirely continental: Munich's Zenith on the 3rd, Frankfurt's Jahrhunderthalle on the 6th, Hamburg Sporthalle on the 7th, Düsseldorf's Mitsubishi Electric Halle on the 8th, Leipzig's Haus Auensee on the 10th, then Italy — Gran Teatro Geox in Padua on the 12th, two nights at the Unipol Forum in Assago on the 13th and 14th, Rome's Palazzo dello Sport on the 16th — before Stuttgart's Porsche Arena on the 19th and the Casino de Paris on the 20th. A Kuala Lumpur show at Zepp is booked for 24 January 2027.

Two different sizes of room

The anniversary run opened in Asia in November 2025 and reached Britain in April 2026, with 911 supporting throughout the UK dates. The venue choices were revealing: alongside the Brighton Centre and two nights at London's Eventim Apollo on 15 and 16 April, the itinerary took in seated concert halls — Birmingham's Symphony Hall on 12 April, Manchester's Bridgewater Hall on 26 April, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 27 April — and smaller theatres such as Princes Hall in Aldershot on 6 April. Later UK dates ran into May, including Connexin Live in Hull on 19 May.

In July 2026 they went considerably smaller, with an eight-date run billed as Up Close and Personal: Norwich Waterfront on the 16th, Cambridge Junction on the 17th, the Wardrobe in Leeds on the 18th, Kanteena in Lancaster on the 20th, Baltic in Liverpool on the 21st, the Rockin' Chair in Wrexham on the 22nd, Circuit in Kingston on the 24th and Chalk in Brighton on the 25th. Tickets went on sale on 19 November 2025, bundled with the album through an independent record shop paired with each venue. The group's own description of the format was blunt: playing and chatting up close and personal in small venues, with the biggest hits, the new album and a few surprises.
