Ten years of confetti and confrontation: BOOS takes its anniversary to AFAS Live
BOOS began in June 2016 as a YouTube complaints show with a confetti cannon and grew into the Dutch investigative platform that brought down The Voice of Holland. On 30 September 2026 Tim Hofman and Marije de Roode mark the tenth birthday with a single retrospective evening at AFAS Live in Amsterdam.
Confetti, misspellings and a broken jaw
BOOS started on 16 June 2016 as #BOOS, a BNNVARA web series on YouTube in which Tim Hofman and his sidekick Marije de Roode took complaints from viewers and went, camera in hand, to confront whoever was responsible. The early episodes leaned on gimmicks. A confetti cannon went off whenever a case was resolved, and captions were misspelled on purpose. Both devices were quietly retired after the third season as the programme's ambitions outgrew them, though the cannon still features in BNNVARA's own account of how the whole thing began.
Hofman, born in Vlaardingen on 9 July 1988, had abandoned three university courses before joining the BNN-VARA Academy on 1 January 2011. He worked on 101 TV and the youth programme 24/7, became a reporter on Spuiten en Slikken in 2013, and published poetry under the name debroervanroos, the brother of Roos. BOOS gave him a format in which the reporter is a participant rather than an observer, and in which the person being chased is expected to answer on camera.
The physical risk of that approach became plain in August 2017, when landlord Ton Hendriks attacked Hofman during filming and broke his jaw. Hendriks was fined and his son was sentenced to 180 hours of community service. The programme carried on, and the episode became part of its founding lore.
From landlords to the Lower House
In the autumn of 2018 BOOS moved beyond consumer cases with a documentary on the kinderpardon, the Dutch child amnesty scheme, following some 400 refugee children who had grown up in the Netherlands and faced deportation. In December 2018 Hofman delivered a petition with more than 250,000 signatures to parliament, and the government subsequently loosened the rules. It was the first time the programme's audience had been turned into a political lever.
A January 2021 film followed young adults seeking euthanasia over three years, a subject far removed from dodgy ticket sellers. The weekly cases kept coming alongside the long-form work: TicketTribune, Amac and Expedia were among the consumer targets, and the team produced reports on street harassment, child vloggers and influencer marketing. BNNVARA says the programme's work has prompted dozens of sets of parliamentary questions over the decade.
The most recent investigations keep the same shape. On 26 September 2024 an episode on La Souris, the country's largest fatbike retailer, alleged that the company was selling electric bikes with motors of 500 to 750 watts while labelling them as legal 250-watt models, and that tens of thousands of riders were unknowingly on illegal vehicles. Around 1,100 bikes were seized during the investigation and the Public Prosecution Service and the transport inspectorate opened a criminal inquiry into the company and its owner.
This is The Voice
The programme's defining moment came in January 2022 with This is The Voice, a long-form episode documenting allegations of sexual misconduct around The Voice of Holland. It drew more than five million views within two hours of release and eventually passed 11 million. The talent show was taken off air and criminal proceedings followed against the judges Ali B and Marco Borsato. For a web series that had begun with a confetti cannon, it was an extraordinary demonstration of reach.
The awards followed. BOOS took the Zilveren Nipkowschijf in 2022 and, in 2023, a Tegel, the highest prize in Dutch journalism, for The Voice investigation. Hofman was named Journalist of the Year the same year. Earlier, #BOOS had won the Televizier-Ster for best online video series in 2020, and Villamedia records that the programme's Tegel recognition also covered its reporting on Christenen voor Israel. BNNVARA's June 2026 announcement lists a Televizier-Ring among the honours it claims for the show.
Fame brought a second threat to Hofman's safety. In October 2023 an armed man entered BNNVARA's premises intending to harm him and was arrested before he got near.
Where BOOS stands in September 2026
By the numbers, the channel reached one million YouTube subscribers in March 2024. By May 2026 it had published 351 episodes across 13 seasons, and BNNVARA counts more than 550 videos across all its outlets. The core format, a viewer's grievance chased to the door of whoever caused it, has not changed in a decade, even as the surrounding output has grown into documentaries and long interviews.
The summer of 2026 brought a change of register. On 6 July BNNVARA announced BOOS Grote Gesprekken, a series of extended conversations in which Hofman travels the country to talk with public figures about themselves, society and their place in shaping it. It began on 9 July and is released on Thursdays at four in the afternoon on NPO Luister, YouTube and NPO Start. The satirist Arjen Lubach, the comedian Soundos El Ahmadi and Bob Scholte of Left Laser were the first named guests, each choosing their own location, from Paradiso to the Dutch Mining Museum. Hofman said the series is where his investigative work and his interviewing for Over Mijn Lijk converge, sharp where it needs to be and personal where it can be.
Hofman remains a divisive presence, and not only for his journalism. On 8 September 2026 Mediacourant reported a row after he mocked, on Threads, the footballer Wout Weghorst's claim of divine help in FC Twente's European win over Qarabag, calling it a ridiculous delusion and accusing the NOS of journalistic clowning for broadcasting it. The SBS 6 programme Shownieuws spent a segment debating whether it should give him any attention at all. None of this has touched the anniversary plans, which have been in place since early summer.
One night at AFAS Live
The tenth anniversary was announced by BNNVARA on 4 June 2026: a single evening at AFAS Live in Amsterdam on Wednesday 30 September 2026. The broadcaster describes it as a look back over ten years of BOOS and ten years of change in Dutch society, built from archive clips, stories from the team behind the scenes, conversations with the makers, special guests, music and what it calls surprises from the archive. Hofman and De Roode host. It is a retrospective rather than a live investigation, and the venue is a 6,000-capacity arena rather than the doorstep of a landlord.
The first guest was named on 27 July 2026, when Hofman posted that the satirist Roel Maalderink would appear, with more announcements promised. Doors open at 18:00, the hall at 18:30, and the programme runs from 19:30 to 21:30. Tickets are tied to BNNVARA membership: 25 euros for existing members and 35 euros for newcomers with a year's membership included, with premium seats sold separately through Ticketmaster. Entry is for those aged 16 and over with valid identification, and the venue is cashless.
There are no reviews of the show, because it has not yet taken place. The ticket page's newsletter sign-up refers to future BOOS On Tour dates and early access to tickets, which is the only public hint so far that the AFAS Live evening might be the start of something rather than a one-off.
