Honolulu, the Love Notes, and a childhood spent on stage

Peter Gene Hernandez was born in Honolulu on 8 October 1985, the son of a Brooklyn father of Puerto Rican and Ashkenazi Jewish descent and a mother who had emigrated from the Philippines. His father nicknamed him Bruno at the age of two, after the wrestler Bruno Sammartino. The name stuck longer than the wrestling reference.

By four he was performing with the family band, the Love Notes, and he became locally known in Hawaii for an Elvis Presley impersonation — a working child entertainer rather than a hobbyist. That apprenticeship, five nights a week in front of holidaymakers, explains more about his current stage manner than any subsequent record deal does.

He left for Los Angeles in 2003, straight out of high school, and signed to Motown in 2004. The label dropped him before releasing anything. The failure pushed him sideways into songwriting, which is where the career actually started.

The songwriter who talked his way to the front

With Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine he formed the production team the Smeezingtons, writing for other artists while looking for a way back to the microphone. The route opened in 2009 with a guest vocal on B.o.B's "Nothin' on You", which went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and made a featured performer into a lead one.

Doo-Wops & Hooligans followed in 2010 with "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade". Unorthodox Jukebox arrived in 2012 and 24K Magic in 2016; all three won Grammys. He headlined the Super Bowl XLVIII half-time show in 2014 and returned as part of the Super Bowl 50 show in 2016, by which point his ability to hold a stadium without a narrative concept was established.

Then the solo releases stopped. An Evening with Silk Sonic, the 2021 duo record with Anderson.Paak, kept him in the conversation and in awards season, and a residency-plus-arena pattern kept him on the road. Two 2024 collaborations, "Die with a Smile" with Lady Gaga and "APT." with Rosé, did the rest, topping charts worldwide and introducing him to an audience that was in primary school when "Grenade" was on the radio. He has now sold more than 150 million records and holds 16 Grammy Awards.

The Romantic: nine songs, thirty-one minutes

The Romantic was released on 27 February 2026 through Atlantic Records, his first solo album in over nine years. It is also his shortest: nine tracks running a little over thirty-one minutes, with no featured artists. Production was handled entirely by Mars and D'Mile, his Silk Sonic collaborator, with sessions between 2023 and 2026 split across Shampoo Press & Curl in Los Angeles, Penrose Recorders in Riverside and Milkboy in Philadelphia.

Lead single "I Just Might" appeared on 9 January 2026 and debuted at number one on the Hot 100 — the first of his songs to enter at the top. The title track's companion single "Risk It All" landed with the album on 27 February, and "On My Soul" followed on 19 June 2026.

The album entered the Billboard 200 at number one with 186,000 equivalent units, of which 93,500 were pure sales, against 93.95 million on-demand streams. It also topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and went to number one in Canada. Critics were warmer than they were excited: a Metacritic score of 66 from generally favourable reviews, with praise for the singing and the production and complaints that the writing leans on romantic stock phrases.

Where he stands, September 2026

The Romantic Tour opened at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on 10 April 2026, his first full headline tour in nearly a decade and the first built entirely around stadiums. It was announced as 39 dates. Demand — including record first-day sales for a Live Nation North America presale — pushed it past 120 shows running through to 30 May 2027. Las Vegas renamed a street for him in April 2026 at the start of the run.

Some cities took four or more nights. London got six at Wembley Stadium in July 2026 — the 18th, 19th, 22nd, 24th, 25th and 28th. Los Angeles ended up with five at SoFi Stadium on 30 September and 2, 3, 6 and 7 October. The 2027 leg turns east into Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and South Korea, with the Japanese portion expanded by twelve shows into the largest indoor dome tour the country has staged.

The money follows the scale. In mid-May 2026, with 74 stadium shows booked through 11 November, Pollstar projected a gross somewhere between $450 million and $500 million. For comparison, his previous touring cycle, Bruno Mars Live in 2022–24, grossed $300.2 million across 49 shows, averaging $6.13 million a night on an average ticket of $122.43.

Anderson.Paak opens every date in his DJ Pee.Wee guise before returning mid-show as one half of Silk Sonic. Victoria Monét, Raye, Leon Thomas and Tyla have rotated through as additional support depending on the market.

What the reviews make of it

Verdicts split on production rather than performance. Rolling Stone UK gave the opening Wembley night on 20 July 2026 four stars in front of 80,000 people, describing an introductory church video, a stained-glass backdrop, a red Cadillac, pyrotechnics and confetti, and calling Mars an artist who knows exactly what his audience wants. Boston.com's Kevin Slane, reviewing the Gillette Stadium shows of 5 and 6 September 2026, went further and called it the best concert he had seen all year, tracing a line through the set from Elvis impersonation to Michael Jackson choreography to James Brown call-and-response, and noting how readily Mars steps back to let the Hooligans take the front.

FACT was less convinced by the Wembley night of 29 July. The review accepted Mars as one of pop's great entertainers but found the evening accomplished rather than electric, criticised a conventional front-facing stage with no catwalk or satellite platform, and concluded that the machinery occasionally outshone the man. A guest appearance during the Silk Sonic segment reportedly landed flat with the London crowd.

What comes next

North America occupies the rest of 2026, with the Los Angeles run closing the announced stadium schedule in early October and further dates into November. The Asia-Pacific leg runs from January to May 2027, and the twelve extra Japanese dome shows suggest the expansion pattern has not finished.

The open question is the one the Wembley reviews raised: whether a show designed around a single front-facing stage can keep its grip across another year of venues this size, or whether the next cycle has to be rebuilt for the room. On current evidence the singing is not the variable.
