The profile · researched 4 October 2026

Eighty-seven weeks on the road with a 1996 Havana recording session

The stage account of how the Buena Vista Social Club album was made won four Tony Awards in June 2025 and a Grammy in February 2026; since 12 September 2026 a second company has been carrying it across North America with a ten-piece Cuban-led band playing the score live.

From an EGREM studio floor to eight million copies

The source material began as a salvage job. In March 1996 the American guitarist Ry Cooder and Nick Gold of World Circuit Records were in Havana to record a session pairing Cuban and West African players; the African musicians could not obtain visas, so the plan was abandoned and replaced with a straight recording of traditional son cubano using local veterans. Juan de Marcos Gonzalez assembled them: the guitarist and singer Compay Segundo, the singer Ibrahim Ferrer, the pianist Ruben Gonzalez, the guitarist Eliades Ochoa and the singer Omara Portuondo, the only woman on the date.

The record came out on World Circuit on 23 June 1997 and in the United States on Nonesuch on 16 September. It took the 1998 Grammy for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album, and Wim Wenders's 1999 documentary about the players and their Amsterdam and Carnegie Hall concerts turned a specialist release into a global one. By 2020 it had sold around eight million copies, which Guinness World Records counts as the best-selling world-music album; in 2022 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry.

Marco Ramirez finds a story in the session tapes

The stage version premiered at Atlantic Theater Company on 17 November 2023 and ran to 28 January 2024, extended twice. Marco Ramirez's book does not attempt a documentary. It runs two timelines against each other — the 1996 sessions, and Havana in the 1950s before and during the revolution — and makes Portuondo the spine, with her relationships to Ferrer and to a sister who leaves the country doing the dramatic work. Saheem Ali directed; Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck choreographed.

Dialogue is in English and every song is sung in Spanish, as recorded. David Yazbek, Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, Nick Gold and Ry Cooder were credited as creative consultants, which is unusual for a jukebox-adjacent musical and shows in how little the arrangements are prettified.

Broadway previews began at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on 21 February 2025 and the production opened on 19 March. Natalie Venetia Belcon and Isa Antonetti played the older and younger Portuondo, Mel Seme and Wesley Wray split Ferrer, Julio Monge and Da'Von T. Moody split Compay Segundo, Jainardo Batista Sterling and Leonardo Reyna split Ruben Gonzalez, Renesito Avich played Ochoa and Justin Cunningham played Juan de Marcos. Marco Paguia was music director. Producers included Orin Wolf, Barbara Broccoli, LaChanze, John Leguizamo, Marc Platt and Atlantic Theater Company.

Ten Tony nominations, four wins, and an award invented for the band

At the 78th Tony Awards on 8 June 2025 at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by Cynthia Erivo, the show tied Death Becomes Her and Maybe Happy Ending for the most nominations with ten. It lost Best Musical, Best Direction, Best Book and the three remaining design categories, and won four: Belcon for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Delgado and Peck for choreography, plus orchestrations and sound design. The administration committee also handed the production a Special Tony Award for its onstage musicians — the clearest institutional admission that the band, not the book, is the event.

The cast recording then won Best Musical Theater Album at the 68th Grammy Awards on 1 February 2026, credited to album producers Marco Paguia, Dean Sharenow and David Yazbek, beating the Death Becomes Her, Gypsy, Just in Time and Maybe Happy Ending recordings.

Standing as of October 2026

The Broadway production is still open. The Internet Broadway Database logged 623 performances to 13 September 2026 with no closing date posted, and Playbill still listed it as running in late September. The commercial tactic now is short star engagements: an announcement on 29 September 2026 put Gina Torres into the role of Portuondo from 13 October to 29 November, and Xolo Maridueña into Juan de Marcos for a seven-week Broadway debut from 17 November to 3 January 2027. Bernie Williams joins the company for six weeks from 22 October to 29 November, and Jose Iglesias's narrator role, Candelita, was extended to 15 November on the strength of demand.

A West End production is planned for 2027. For now the touring company is the only way to see the show outside midtown Manhattan.

The route: Buffalo to Chicago, 36 cities

The tour was announced on 6 May 2025 and built in Buffalo. Close to a hundred cast, crew and creative staff spent several weeks there on rehearsal and technical work before eight performances at Shea's Performing Arts Center from 12 to 19 September 2026 opened an 87-week run of roughly 36 cities. Shea's put the local economic impact of the engagement alone above six million dollars; the lead producer, Orin Wolf, noted that the company had moved its warehouse operation from Maryland to Buffalo a year earlier.

Full casting came on 6 August 2026: Karmine Alers as Omara, Mauro Castillo as Ibrahim, Frank Rodriguez as Compay, Robert M. Jimenez as Ruben, San Miguel Perez as Eliades, Holiday as Juan de Marcos, with Isabel Gonzalez, Aidan Olmo, Jaleel Battles Jr., Irving Aday O'Connor and Liana Morales as the younger selves and Haydee. The band is led from the piano by music director Nicolas Perez, with Abraham Dorta on guitar, Jorge Bringas on bass, Roisel Suarez on trumpet, Ben Romanow on trombone, Joaquin Sosa on woodwinds and four percussionists — Ray Contreras, Keisel Jimenez Leyva, Caleb Michel and Ivan Llanes Montejo.

From Buffalo the route went to Durham from 22 to 27 September and Miami from 29 September to 4 October, then a Florida block through Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Atlanta's Fox Theatre from 27 October to 1 November, and a Texas and Louisiana stretch across November and early December. Minneapolis covers the new year, with longer sit-downs following at San Francisco's Orpheum from 2 to 21 February 2027, the Hollywood Pantages from 9 to 28 March, Segerstrom, Denver, Cincinnati and Cleveland, before the announced schedule ends at Chicago's Cadillac Palace from 31 August to 12 September 2027.

What the staging is doing

Arnulfo Maldonado's set works the studio-and-nightclub double duty, lit by Tyler Micoleau, with costumes by Dede Ayite spanning four decades of Havana and Jonathan Deans's sound design — one of the Tony wins — carrying a ten-piece acoustic band without flattening it. The Delgado and Peck choreography mixes Cuban social dance with ballet and modern vocabulary rather than reproducing period steps.

Critical opinion has been consistent in shape: strong on the music and the players, lukewarm on the book. Time Out New York's Adam Feldman gave four stars out of five, called the result irresistible, found that the script had become more generic in the move uptown, and concluded that the music itself is the story. The New York Theater review made much the same split, rating the Broadway version sharper than the Atlantic staging and noting how unusually the show foregrounds individual instrumentalists.

The show, now

The touring production runs 2 hours 15 minutes: two sixty-minute acts with a fifteen-minute interval, and no support act — the ten-piece band is the attraction and plays throughout, led from the piano by music director Nicolas Perez with four percussionists, trumpet, trombone, woodwinds, guitar and bass. About fifteen numbers are staged, ten of them from the 1996 album, presented either as nightclub floor shows or as takes being cut in the studio, with the action cutting between the 1996 sessions and Havana in the 1950s so that four principals appear in both older and younger versions. Dialogue is in English and every song stays in the original Spanish; Broadway audiences were given a programme insert with nine illustrated pages on where each song came from. "Veinte Anos", "Bruca Manigua", "De Camino a la Vereda" and "Silencio" sit along the way, and "Candela" closes the night with the company and band downstage. Critics have split the same way throughout the run — Time Out New York gave four stars out of five and called the book generic while judging that the music itself carries the story — and reports from the Buffalo launch in September 2026 singled out the live band and the decision to keep the lyrics untranslated. Venues advise against attendance for under-eights and do not admit children under six.
