Thirty seasons in Sydney: the Eagles open their anniversary year with a new captain and no wins yet
The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League club at Centre 200 is marking its 30th season on Cape Breton Island after a first-round exit last April, a summer of roster turnover and an opening weekend that produced two shootout losses.
Sorel, Granby, Sydney
The club that fills Centre 200 on winter afternoons did not begin anywhere near Cape Breton. Its lineage runs back to 1969 and the Sorel Eperviers, through Verdun in 1977, back to Sorel in 1979, and on to Granby in 1981, where the team played as the Bisons until it was renamed the Predateurs in 1995. That Granby side won the Memorial Cup in 1996. Two seasons later the franchise had left Quebec altogether, relocating to Sydney, Nova Scotia for 1997-98 under the name Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
The first word was dropped on 14 August 2019, when the club rebranded as the Cape Breton Eagles, keeping the black, white, gold and grey colours and the eagle mascot, Screech. The home rink has not changed since the move. Centre 200, at 481 George Street in downtown Sydney, opened in early 1987, hosted the opening ceremonies of that year's Canada Winter Games and housed the American Hockey League's Cape Breton Oilers from 1988 to 1996. It co-hosted the 2003 world junior championship with Halifax, and took a round of upgrades announced in 2009 that added a video scoreboard, 13 luxury boxes and club seating, part-funded by half a million dollars from the hockey club itself. Capacity for hockey is roughly 5,000, expandable to about 6,500 for concerts.
The players who left, and the trophies that did not arrive
The strongest argument for the Eagles as a development address is the list of players who moved through Sydney on their way out. Marc-Andre Fleury went first overall to Pittsburgh in 2003 and has his number 29 hanging in the rafters alongside Chris Culligan's number 7. James Sheppard went ninth to Minnesota in 2006, Evgeny Svechnikov nineteenth to Detroit in 2015, and Pierre-Luc Dubois third overall to Columbus in 2016. Ondrej Pavelec, William Carrier and Drake Batherson all came through the same room.
What the Sydney era has not produced is a league championship. The franchise has won no President's Cup since relocating in 1997. The closest it came was 2006-07, comfortably the best regular season of the Cape Breton years at 46-22 for 94 points and 308 goals scored, which ended in a seven-game league semi-final defeat to Val-d'Or. A division title arrived in 2003-04, when the club won 49 games and topped the Atlantic Division. The 2018-19 team, at 40-22 and 86 points, went out in the second round. Twenty-nine completed seasons in Sydney have delivered plenty of first-round draft picks and no banner.
Three seasons of slow decline
The recent arc is easy to read in the standings. In 2023-24 the Eagles finished 39-26 and third in the Maritimes Division. In 2024-25 they were 34-23 and second in the division. In 2025-26 they slipped to 28-23-4-9 for 69 points and sixth place in the Eastern Conference, scoring 171 goals and conceding 198.
A minus-27 goal difference is not the profile of a contender, and the club spent last winter well behind the conference pace set by Moncton, who took the Jean Rougeau Trophy as regular-season champions, and Chicoutimi, who went on to win the Gilles-Courteau Trophy and the league's third title in their history. The Memorial Cup that followed went to Kitchener of the Ontario league, who beat Everett in the final.
Six games against a first-year club
The 2026 playoffs put the Eagles against the Newfoundland Regiment in a conference quarter-final, and the series went to the Regiment four games to two. Cape Breton's one moment of resistance came on 3 April at Centre 200, in game five, with the season a period from over. Newfoundland led 4-1 into the third. Lewis Gendron, in his final major junior spring, pulled the game level with 71 seconds left in regulation after a night that also brought him two assists, and Maxime Sauthier scored 22 seconds into overtime, his third overtime winner in three consecutive home games. The Eagles outshot the Regiment 43-28 and Felix Hamel stopped 24 of 28.
Game six, on Easter Sunday, 5 April, at the Mary Brown's Centre in St John's, was not close. The Regiment won 7-3 and moved into the second round. It was the first postseason series win in the short life of the Newfoundland club, and it ended Gendron's junior career.
A 30th-season roster, and a captain who could not play
The club announced its roster for the 30th season on 3 September 2026: 25 players, of whom 12 were back from last year, seven were rookies, seven arrived by trade and four signed as free agents. Lucas Beckman, taken 97th overall by Ottawa in 2025 and now past 130 league games, shares the goaltending with Sam Berthiaume, who won gold with Canada at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Alonso Gosselin, who has played more than 150 games and won last spring's title with Chicoutimi, anchors the defence alongside Jacob De Ladurantaye and Aiden McCullough. Up front, Reece Peitzsche brings more than 250 games of experience, with Cole Chandler, a 2025 Boston pick, and Liam Lefebvre, taken by Los Angeles in 2026, both arriving from Shawinigan along with Elias Schneider. Jason Clarke remains head coach, Sylvain Couturier general manager.
Will Murphy, 19, was presented with the captain's jersey at Centre 200 on Thursday 17 September, the 35th captain in franchise history and the successor to Gendron. He was injured and unavailable for the opener the following night. In his absence the Litalien brothers, Romain and Eliot, wear letters with Peitzsche at home, while Gosselin, Noah Jettelson and Lefebvre rotate them on the road.
Two shootouts, no wins
The 30th season began on 18 September against Halifax, the closest thing the club has to a natural rival, and the night followed a pattern that has repeated since. Cape Breton trailed 4-2 going into the third, scored two power-play goals to force overtime and lost 5-4 in the shootout, Nathan Langlois settling it. Eliot Litalien took first star with a goal, two assists and 17 wins from 23 faceoffs; Jacob Hartlin and Adam Klaus also scored. Berthiaume stopped 29 of 33 in his first start.
Two nights later, on Sunday 20 September, Charlottetown did the same thing. The Eagles came from behind three times, put 21 shots on the Islanders in the opening period alone and finished with a 59-29 advantage on the shot clock, only for Donald Hickey to make 56 saves and Will Shields to score in the seventh round of the shootout. Cole Chandler, Schneider and Peitzsche had the goals. The club sits at 0-0-0-2: two points from two games, a functioning power play, a goaltender holding up, and nothing yet in the win column. The next home dates are 2 October against Saint John and 4 October against Moncton.
The show, now
A night at Centre 200 runs to the junior hockey template: three 20-minute periods, two ice cuts, roughly two and a half hours from puck drop, with weeknight starts at 7pm and Sunday matinees at 3pm. The building holds about 5,000 for hockey and has done since it opened in 1987, with 13 luxury boxes and club seating added after the 2009 upgrade; tickets go through the Centre 200 box office on George Street or Ticketmaster. The draw is the Maritimes schedule — Halifax, Charlottetown, Saint John and Moncton all within a bus ride, and Halifax the fixture that fills the place, as it did for the 30th-season opener on 18 September. Games are called on CJCB radio locally and streamed on FloHockey for anyone off the island. The team on the ice this autumn is young and shot-heavy rather than efficient: 59 shots against Charlottetown on 20 September produced three goals and a shootout defeat, and both opening games went past regulation after the Eagles came from behind. The recent template for a memorable night is the one from 3 April, when a 4-1 deficit against Newfoundland turned into a tying goal with 71 seconds left and an overtime winner 22 seconds later — the third straight home game the Eagles had won in extra time. Screech, the club's eagle mascot, works the crowd between whistles.
