A 1976 Carpenters concert, rebuilt four afternoons a week off the Las Vegas Strip
Sally Olson and Ned Mills have played their in-character reconstruction of the Carpenters' 1976 tour more than 500 times at Planet Hollywood's V Theater; this autumn they take it out on an eight-date eastern run that ends in the Christmas version.
A Vermont voice studio, then the Strip
Sally Olson did not arrive at Karen Carpenter by the usual tribute-circuit route. She grew up in Rutland, Vermont, graduated cum laude from Middlebury College with a degree in studio art and French, and trained as a painter at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Florence Academy of Art before enrolling at Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York in 2010. Her early credits are scattered rather than musical: a guest appearance on the CBS series Hack in 2004, the short film Widow in 2010, an award-winning Vermont car-dealership commercial in 2011.
The music came through teaching. From 2009 Olson worked at Bill Reed's voice studio in Burlington, and ran a studio of her own in South Burlington until 2018. In 2013 Reed suggested she build a one-woman show around the voice her students and audiences kept comparing to Karen's. That show opened in January 2015 and was, by Olson's own account, a storytelling cabaret rather than a portrayal: in costume, telling the story, but not in character. It reached New York in April 2017 at the Triad Theater on the Upper West Side.
The turn came in late January 2018, on her first Las Vegas booking, when she was put together with the pianist Ned Mills. Olson has called it a happy accident. Mills was born in Charleston, South Carolina, started piano at four, and took a jazz arranging degree cum laude from North Texas State University. He had opened for Bobby McFerrin, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow and Don Rickles, conducted and arranged for the Stars of the Lawrence Welk Show, the Ink Spots and the Shirelles, played Rhapsody in Blue on Liberace's mirrored piano at the Liberace Museum in 2003, and coached Halle Berry's piano scenes for the ABC film The Wedding. He had also run his own Strip show, Piano Follies. Both had played in Legends in Concert, the Las Vegas revue; they are the first Karen and Richard pair it has carried.
The reconstruction, not the medley
What Mills brought was arranging. Olson's cabaret turned into a recreation of the Carpenters' 1976 touring show, performed start to finish in character, with period costume and hair, Richard's stage patter rebuilt from the originals, and the close vocal stacks reconstructed rather than approximated. Olson sings Karen and plays Karen's drum feature; Mills plays Richard, directs the band and takes the classical piano spot that sat in the real 1976 set.
The programme runs past twenty-five songs and keeps the shape of the period concert rather than a greatest-hits running order: We've Only Just Begun, Yesterday Once More, Superstar, (They Long To Be) Close To You, a Bacharach and David medley, with archive video projection carrying the biographical thread between numbers. The company's own description is blunt about what it is selling, calling itself the only Carpenters tribute built to be accurate in sight as well as sound.
The band is deliberately modular, which is how the same show fits a 5pm mall-theatre slot and a 1,500-seat civic hall. The press kit offers six configurations: the duo alone, ensembles of five, six or seven, and a nine- or eleven-piece Superstar Orchestra for venues that will pay for strings and reeds.
What they have recorded
The recorded catalogue is thinner than the performance history, and most of it is recent. Mills produced the pair's first studio album at Skeleton Key Recording in Las Vegas, with Olson on lead and Mills on backing vocals; the cuts include We've Only Just Begun and a reading of Desperado. It is distributed digitally through DistroKid, with CD and vinyl sold directly.
Before that there were two sets of demo sessions, one in Las Vegas and one at Lane Gibson Recording in Charlotte, Vermont, which between them cover Top of the World, I Need to Be in Love, Rainy Days and Mondays, Ave Maria, Merry Christmas Darling, Little Altar Boy and a Spanish-language Superstar that went out as a video.
The one piece of original writing is the more interesting item. In October 2024 the pair released Christmastime with You, a new song composed and arranged by Mills in the Carpenters' idiom, jazz harmony stack and all, with a video on YouTube and Vevo. It is the closest thing the act has to work that stands on its own rather than on reconstruction.
Standing now
The residency is the measure of the thing: more than 500 performances at the V Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, Mondays to Thursdays at 5pm. The show has taken seven Best of Las Vegas awards, including the 2024 Gold for Best Impersonator, and TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice honours in both 2024 and 2025.
The dated run of developments since 2024 reads as steady institutional acceptance rather than a breakout. The pair were the booked act for the Carpenters' 50th anniversary celebration in Thousand Oaks, California, in April 2019 and for the sold-out 55th at the Downey Theatre in April 2024, in the Carpenters' home town. On 22 April 2024 they met Richard Carpenter himself, at his car-collection warehouse. Chris Bohjalian's novel The Princess of Las Vegas, published on 19 March 2024, name-checks the show. On 5 September 2025 the Las Vegas mayor, Shelley Berkley, proclaimed the date Carpenters Legacy Day. On 4 December 2025 they played the Pledge for Vegas fundraiser for Vegas PBS.
Critical notice has come mostly from the local and regional press. John Katsilometes in the Las Vegas Review-Journal called the show musically sound and vocally spot-on, and said it would please any fans of the duo. Sam Novak at Vegas 411 called it nothing short of astounding, and Vermont Public Radio described a unique and very fine concert — all three quotations are the ones the company carries in its own press kit, which is where the published record on this show largely sits.
The 2026 and 2027 diary
The touring pattern is short, concentrated bursts around the Vegas run. February 2026 took them to Florida for a private party in Manalapan on 9 February and a residents-only date at the Century Village Theatre in Deerfield Beach on 11 February.
The autumn leg is the substantial one. It opens at Harken Hall in Madison, Tennessee, on Friday 13 November, doors at six and performance at seven, with advance general admission at $40 and the venue's loveseat and suite seating at $45 and $55 a head. Then the Bijou Theatre in Knoxville on Sunday 15 November at 3pm, Lynn Memorial Auditorium in Massachusetts on 19 November, the Palace Theatre in Syracuse on 20 November and the Theater at Innovation Square in Rochester on 21 November.
From 30 November the set changes. The Kate in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, that night, the Spire Center in Plymouth on 2 December and Cohoes Music Hall on 3 December all take the holiday version, and the Vegas residency switches to it for December through Christmas Day. Further ahead the pair are already selling two dates at the Delray Beach Playhouse on 24 and 25 April 2027, the Andiamo Celebrity Showroom in Warren, Michigan, on 15 May 2027, and the Abbeville Opera House in South Carolina on 18 December 2027.
The show, now
The standing version runs 90 minutes with no interval and no support act: Sally Olson and Ned Mills stay in character as Karen and Richard throughout, playing a reconstruction of the Carpenters' 1976 touring show rather than a hits set, with period costume and hair, Richard's original stage dialogue rebuilt, and archive video projection between numbers. The programme passes twenty-five songs — We've Only Just Begun, Yesterday Once More, Superstar, (They Long To Be) Close To You, a Bacharach and David medley — and keeps the 1976 set's two solo spots, Karen's drum feature and Richard's classical piano turn, plus the comic business between them. In Las Vegas it plays Mondays to Thursdays at 5pm at the V Theater inside Planet Hollywood, all ages admitted, tickets $59.98 to $79.98; on the road the band scales from the bare duo up to a nine- or eleven-piece Superstar Orchestra, and ticket prices drop accordingly, with advance general admission at $40 for the Harken Hall date in Madison, Tennessee, on 13 November 2026. From 30 November 2026 the touring dates and the whole of December in Vegas switch to Carpenters Legacy: A Christmas Portrait, a roughly thirty-song variant that folds Sleigh Ride, Merry Christmas Darling and The Christmas Song in among the hits and runs through Christmas Day. Published notice is mostly regional: the Las Vegas Review-Journal's John Katsilometes called it musically sound and vocally spot-on; Vegas 411's Sam Novak called it astounding; Vermont Public Radio described a unique and very fine concert. The show has taken seven Best of Las Vegas awards and Travellers' Choice honours in 2024 and 2025, and was the booked act for the Carpenters' own 50th and 55th anniversary celebrations.
