New Jersey, a drink-driving class, and a decision

Handler was born on 25 February 1975 in Livingston, New Jersey. Her father was Ashkenazi Jewish, her mother a German Mormon who emigrated in 1958; Handler was raised in Reform Judaism and had a bat mitzvah. Her eldest brother, Chet, died in a hiking accident at 22, when she was nine — a loss she has returned to repeatedly in print and on stage.

The origin story of the act is unusually specific. At 21 she recounted her arrest for driving under the influence to a class of other offenders, found that the room laughed, and decided to try stand-up properly. What followed was mostly television rather than clubs: Girls Behaving Badly on Oxygen from 2002 to 2005, then The Chelsea Handler Show on E! in 2006, which ran two seasons.

Chelsea Lately arrived on E! in 2007 and stayed until 2014, clearing more than a thousand episodes, with the mockumentary spin-off After Lately running alongside it from 2011 to 2013. She hosted the MTV Video Music Awards in 2010, was named to the Time 100 in 2012, and took Just For Laughs' Comedy Person of the Year the same year.

The books were the engine

Handler's publishing record is the part of the career that most consistently paid off. My Horizontal Life appeared in 2005. Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea reached number one on the New York Times list on 11 May 2008, and Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang did the same on 21 March 2010. Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me followed in 2011, Uganda Be Kidding Me in 2014 — two weeks at number one — and Life Will Be the Death of Me in 2019, which also topped the list.

Tour press now describes her as a seven-time New York Times bestselling author. The most recent book, I'll Have What She's Having, was published in February 2025, a month before her latest Netflix special, and the two releases were promoted more or less as a pair.

From talk show to specials

The Netflix years began with the documentary series Chelsea Does in 2016 and the talk show Chelsea, which ran from 2016 into 2017 before being wound down so she could concentrate on political activism. Hello, Privilege. It's Me, Chelsea, a documentary about white privilege, followed in 2019.

The stand-up rebuild started properly with Evolution, made for HBO Max in 2020, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. She won a People's Choice Award for Comedy Act of 2021, and that year mounted the Vaccinated and Horny Tour: 115 shows across more than 90 cities, an unusually punishing schedule for a performer who had spent the previous decade behind a desk. Revolution arrived on Netflix in 2022.

Her third Netflix hour, The Feeling, premiered on 25 March 2025. It was filmed at the Wellmont Theater in New Jersey — effectively a home-state taping — and written with Shannon Hartman, who has directed much of her filmed work. Reaction was split rather than unanimous: some reviewers treated it as her strongest hour, others found it middling. Alongside all of this she has hosted the iHeart podcast Dear Chelsea since 2021, and fronted the Critics' Choice Awards two years running, the 29th ceremony in 2024 and the 30th in 2025.

Where she stands in late 2026

The most recent development off stage is scripted television. On 21 February 2026 it was reported that Hulu is developing Townhouse with 20th Television, written by Zoe Young, with Handler set to star and executive produce. Handler would play a reality star trying to rehabilitate her image with a live-in entourage of misfits, until an estranged daughter moves into the crumbling Manhattan townhouse and forces the question of motherhood. Young is a 2025 graduate of USC's screenwriting MFA and this would be her first television credit. The project had no series order at the time of the announcement, so it remains development rather than a green light.

In Las Vegas she holds a residency, Chelsea at The Chelsea, in the theatre of the same name inside the Cosmopolitan — the venue's first residency by a female comedian. On 26 August 2025 four 2026 dates were added: 31 January, 7 March, 18 April and 30 May. She donates a dollar from every ticket sold to The Animal Foundation, Nevada's largest open-admission shelter.

The touring announcement came on 15 September 2025, when The High and Mighty Tour was unveiled with a Minneapolis State Theatre date for 25 April 2026, tickets going on general sale that 19 September. Her stated reason for going back out was blunt: "I'm excited to get out on the road and provide laughter and joyfulness to everyone out there who needs an extra dose of it right now." A year on, on 23 September 2026, she appeared on Live with Kelly and Mark to talk about the tour, about what it means to keep doing stand-up as she ages, and about the physical and mental cost of touring comedy at this stage — along with a side habit she has picked up of matchmaking audience members, in the room and afterwards on social media.

The routing, and why the club dates matter

The autumn and winter 2026 leg is a theatre run with an odd and telling wrinkle in the middle of it. October opens at the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta on the 2nd, then The Lyric in Baltimore on the 3rd, the Temple Theatre in Saginaw on the 4th, the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan on the 8th, Citizens Live at The Wylie in Pittsburgh on the 9th and Meridian Hall in Toronto on the 10th. The Morrison Center in Boise follows on the 16th and the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox in Spokane on the 17th.

Then, between 22 and 29 October, she plays four nights at the Hollywood Improv — a club, not a theatre, at a fraction of the capacity of everything around it. Headliners of her level book rooms that size for one reason, which is to work material in front of a crowd close enough to hear what is not landing. It is the clearest signal in the whole itinerary that the hour is still moving.

The run then resumes at scale: The Masonic in San Francisco on 7 November, Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City on the 13th, 713 Music Hall in Houston on the 21st and the Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving on the 22nd. December takes in the Paramount Theatre in Denver on the 5th, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver on the 6th, Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida on the 17th and the Tampa Theatre on the 18th.
