Five dollars, 120 seats and whoever walks in: Comedy Beast's Tuesday habit at the Howlin' Wolf Den

Comedy Beast is a weekly stand-up showcase in the back room of a New Orleans music hall, running every Tuesday at 7.30pm with a rotating cast of hosts and the occasional unannounced touring headliner. It has outlasted at least three sets of compères and remains the cheapest serious comedy ticket in the city.

The back room on South Peters

Comedy Beast is a room, a night and a habit rather than a touring act. Every Tuesday it takes over the Den, the 120-capacity performance space attached to the Howlin' Wolf at 907 South Peters Street in the Warehouse District, with a bill of local stand-ups and whoever happens to be passing through town. Showtime is 7.30pm. The hosts are Kamari Stevens and Mallory Head, and Head is the organiser named on the show's Eventbrite page, which sells the night as a rolling series of dates rather than as individual events, with no refunds.

What it costs depends on which listing is consulted, and that tells its own story about a door show. 504Comedy, the New Orleans comedy calendar, puts admission at five dollars, as did a Big Easy Magazine listing for the 15 April 2025 edition. The Howlin' Wolf's own website files Comedy Beast under its free comedy nights, alongside Comedy Gumbeaux on Thursdays. The promotional line used across the ticketing pages — "New Orleans' premiere stand-up comedy showcase" — is the organisers' own; 504Comedy's description is more useful about the actual appeal, noting that nobody knows in advance who might show up.

The building the show inherited

The Howlin' Wolf has been moving around the city for longer than the comedy night has existed. Brothers Jack and Jeff Groetsch opened it in Metairie in 1988, naming it after the bluesman Chester Burnett, and relocated it around 1990 into a cotton warehouse at 828 South Peters. The Groetsches sold the business in 2000 to Howie Kaplan, the current owner. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005 the venue moved into a larger space a block away at 907 South Peters, the former New Orleans Music Hall, where it sits today.

That main room holds 1,200 people. The Den is the small adjoining space, and it is the Den — not the hall — that carries the comedy. The bar runs more than 100 beers in cans and bottles and 25 draught lines, there is outdoor seating, and the mahogany bar itself was salvaged from Al Capone's Lexington Hotel in Chicago when the building was demolished in the 1980s. A Michalopoulos mural covers the exterior. The Den's other standing booking is the Hot 8 Brass Band on Sunday evenings, which gives a fair measure of the room: close, loud, used to live performance, and not built as a comedy club.

Hosts come and go; the Tuesday doesn't

The most striking thing about Comedy Beast is how much of it has changed while the slot has stayed put. Gambit's weekly comedy listings in May 2018 recorded the show at the Howlin' Wolf Den on Tuesdays at 8.30pm, free of charge, hosted by Cyrus Cooper and Vincent Zambon. By 17 May 2023, when the New Orleans tourism board published its guide to comedy in the city, the listing had moved to 8pm and the hosts were given as Allison Hotard and Amanda G. In October 2026 it is 7.30pm, five dollars, Stevens and Head. Three sets of compères, three start times, one night of the week.

That turnover reflects the scene around it. Writing for Via Nola Vie on 26 December 2019, Zambon — then seven years into performing — described a city that had gone from roughly three comedy shows a week when he started to as many as three a night. He credited part of that visibility to the comedian Geoffrey Gauchet, who built 504comedy.com to catalogue every stand-up, improv and open-mic night in the city; the same site now lists Comedy Beast's weekly dates. The piece also noted the strength of the city's female comics, among them Laura Sanders, who moved to New Orleans and released a debut album that topped the iTunes comedy chart.

Comedy Beast sits inside that ecosystem rather than above it. The Den alone carries three recurring stand-up nights: Comedy Beast on Tuesdays, Piss Yo Pants Sundays at 8pm and Stoned vs. Drunk vs. Sober on the fourth Wednesday, the latter two at fifteen dollars. On a given week in October 2026, 504Comedy's calendar lists more than twenty comedy events across the city.

Why touring comics stop in

The show's reputation rests on the drop-in. Out All Day's round-up of New Orleans comedy calls it a curated showcase in the better of the Howlin' Wolf's two rooms and a respected one, and records that Hannibal Buress and Kyle Kinane have both turned up unannounced to do sets. 504Comedy's event page names Buress, Kinane and Sean Patton among past performers.

The mechanics behind that are unglamorous and entirely logical. New Orleans is a stop rather than a destination on most comedy tours; Tuesday is the night nobody books a theatre; and a 120-seat room with a five-dollar door is where a comic working out new material would rather be than on a big stage. The result is a bill that mixes comics who are three months into stand-up with ones who have a special out, and an audience that cannot tell in advance which it will get.

Comedy Beast has not produced a record, a special or a season, and there is no evidence it has tried. Its output is the night itself, roughly fifty times a year.

Where it stands in October 2026

The show is running without interruption. 504Comedy's October 2026 calendar lists Comedy Beast on 6, 13, 20 and 27 October, all at 7.30pm at the Howlin' Wolf, and the event page names Stevens and Head as hosts with admission at five dollars. The 27 October edition carries a formal TicketWeb listing through the venue: 7.30pm Central, 18 and over, with ticket holders unable to produce valid identification refused entry, will-call collection at the main entrance and limited wheelchair seating near the stage.

The oddity in the show's current paperwork is the resale market. Vivid Seats maintains a performer page for Comedy Beast which, as of mid-October 2026, shows no upcoming events at all while quoting historical prices starting around $24 and averaging $29 — roughly five to six times the door price, for a weekly night that sells at the bar. Several other resale aggregators carry individual 2026 dates in the same way. Anyone buying Comedy Beast as though it were a tour is paying a substantial premium over simply turning up on a Tuesday, which is how the show has always worked.

Neither host has a widely documented performing CV outside the city, and Stevens also handles booking for the night. That is the show in 2026: locally run, locally booked, dependent on a 120-seat back room and on who happens to be in town.

The show, now

A Comedy Beast Tuesday runs roughly 90 minutes to two hours by the ticketing listings' estimate, starting at 7.30pm in the Den — a 120-capacity room off the Howlin' Wolf's main hall, with a bar carrying 25 draught lines and over 100 bottled and canned beers, outdoor seating and a stage the front row can touch. There is no support act in the touring sense: the format is the bill, with Kamari Stevens and Mallory Head topping and tailing a run of short sets from local comics, visiting acts filling the middle, and the standing possibility of an unbilled name walking on. Out All Day describes it as a curated showcase in the better of the venue's two rooms and a respected one, and records Hannibal Buress and Kyle Kinane dropping in unannounced; 504Comedy adds Sean Patton to the list and sells the night on exactly that uncertainty, noting that nobody knows in advance who might appear. Admission is five dollars at the door, the 27 October 2026 edition is listed as 18 and over with identification required, and resale pages quoting $24 to $29 for the same night are charging several times what the bar does.
