daine's long run-up: the Werribee SoundCloud kid who built a debut album without autotune

Daine Lauren Wright spent six years turning emo bedroom uploads into one of Australian pop's most-watched solo projects. Debut album In Endless Awe & Agony lands on 6 November 2026, with headline runs through Europe, Australia and North America immediately behind it.

"No one wanted to be in a band with me"

Daine Lauren Wright was born on 20 November 2002 in Werribee, on the western edge of Melbourne, and grew up in the city. Filipino-Australian and non-binary — they/them and she/her both apply — Wright's first musical diet came secondhand, off a mother's iPod: Madonna, eighties pop, Avril Lavigne. The teenage turn was harder and more specific, towards midwest emo and screamo, with American Football, Foxing and Midwest Pen Pals as the reference points and Run For Cover Records as the imagined home. Uploads to SoundCloud began at fifteen. The explanation offered later for why the project is a solo one is blunt: no one wanted to be in a band with them, so it had to be done alone.

The first proper release under the mononym was "Picking Flowers" on 15 May 2020, which arrived in the middle of Melbourne's first lockdown and was filed by V Magazine as e-girl pop. "My Way Out" followed on 17 July, "Ascension" on 28 October and "Angel Numbers" on 12 November. By December 2020 "Bloody Knees" had drawn public support from Charli xcx — the two had met backstage at Laneway Festival in 2019, and the mentorship that grew out of it is something Wright has credited with pushing the work towards something less borrowed.

Five years of EPs and other people's records

The next phase was built on collaboration. In 2021, working through Warner Music Australia, came "boys wanna txt" with Ericdoa and "SALT" with Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon. The first live show, in June 2021, was at the Kindred Ballroom in Yarraville — a small room in Melbourne's inner west, a long way from the Enmore Theatre.

Debut EP Quantum Jumping arrived on 28 April 2022, carrying "cemetery dreams" and "IDC". "boythots", released on 11 August 2022, was the first clear move towards pop structure rather than digital abrasion. Second EP shapeless followed on 24 February 2023, led by "writhe" and sitting alongside "BITE BACK" and "CUT MY HEART OUT", the latter still a fixture of the live set three years on. "SHADES ON" with Kreayshawn came in 2024. Third EP i want the light to swallow me whole was released on 13 June 2025 with "eighteen" and "payphone", and in the same year Wright toured Europe and the UK supporting yeule.

The actual breakthrough came sideways. "It's You", co-written with Ninajirachi in late 2023, landed on Ninajirachi's album I Love My Computer and became the pair's biggest song; an underscores remix pushed it further, and Rolling Stone Australia was writing about its reach by 12 August 2025. Ninajirachi and Wright have been working together for roughly a decade, and the song did for Wright's profile what four EPs had not.

Pack Records, and a record made without autotune

Wright signed to Pack Records in late 2025, and has described the signing as the thing that forced the issue — the realisation that the readiness being waited for was never going to arrive. The first fruit was "PQC" on 17 June 2026, written and produced with Curtis Everett Pawley, with a Dylan Marriot-directed video built around a cheer routine. It is deliberately less processed than anything before it, and Wright has framed it as an embrace of failure and of being seen while being misunderstood. The FADER called it as catchy as a children's tune and as dancey as any electroclash record; it has since passed a million Spotify plays, and drew notices from Pitchfork, Stereogum and The New York Times. A Bassvictim edit followed on 1 July 2026.

The album was announced on 15 July 2026 alongside "Love Love (Love Two)" — correctly, "Love Love (Love Love)" — a song about the effort of holding an ordinary face over a depressive spiral. In Endless Awe & Agony is due on 6 November 2026 via Pack, structured around a Jungian individuation arc: identity, desire, fear, transformation. Wright has been candid about the intimidation of the format, saying an album needs a cohesive concept and a sound, and that the lyrical aim this time was uglier and more uncomfortable material handled cheekily.

Third single "Product of Profit (P.O.P.)" arrived on 9 September 2026, with a video co-directed by Wright, Isaiah Cirillo and Dylan Marriot that is mostly close-ups of the singer addressing the camera; the subject is the sensation of becoming a product. "I Used to Kill" with Aldn also belongs to this run. The structural fact about the record is that it is the first Wright has made without autotune, after a catalogue defined by heavy vocal processing. It was written through a period of personal loss and recovery. On 30 September 2026, Wright appeared on triple j's Like A Version for the first time, playing "PQC" and covering Martin Solveig and Dragonette's "Hello" — a choice explained in the accompanying interview as part poltergeist story, part wish to bring back millennial optimism.

From the opening slot to the headline bill

July 2026 was spent opening Ninajirachi's Dark Crystal V tour across Australia with Lucy Bedroque, beginning at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney on 3 July and taking in the Governor Hindmarsh in Adelaide on 11 July and the Forum in Melbourne on 17 July. The Sydney review in The Music described Wright opening the night moving constantly across the stage, running "PQC" and "CUT MY HEART OUT", then returning mid-headline set to sing "It's You" with Ninajirachi. Playing that song to a room of 2,500 is the experience Wright has cited as the trigger for a larger live ambition: a full band rather than a laptop and a microphone.

The headline schedule around the album release is dense. Pitchfork Music Festival London on 4 November has Wright at Oslo in Hackney with MGNA Crrrta and Touching Ice, and Pitchfork Paris follows on 6 November, release day. The Australian In Endless Awe & Agony tour takes in Metro Social in Sydney on 13 and 14 November — the Saturday booked all-ages — then Brisbane on 19 November and Max Watt's in Melbourne on 21 November, with doors from 7.30pm. A North American run follows in December: Toronto on the 2nd, Philadelphia on the 5th, Brooklyn's Elsewhere on the 6th, Chicago on the 8th, Portland's Holocene on the 10th, San Francisco on the 12th, and two Los Angeles nights on the 13th and 14th.

That American itinerary has already been revised upwards. The first announcement had Toronto at the Drake Hotel and Chicago at Schubas; both were moved to larger rooms, the Garrison and Lincoln Hall, after demand, and Wright announced the upgrade publicly. As of late October 2026, Toronto, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, San Francisco and the Echo show in Los Angeles are listed as sold out.

Access, and what the record has to carry

Wright lives with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and autism, and campaigns for accessible live music venues — a practical concern for an artist whose natural habitat is the kind of small, stairs-and-no-lift club room the December tour is built from. It shapes the touring question as much as the artistic one: the move to a full band is partly about scale and partly about building a show that can be sustained night after night.

The stated thesis is simple enough. Vulnerability makes a good song, because connection is what audiences are after. What is being tested in November is whether a catalogue of EPs and guest verses, plus a viral collaboration, converts into an album-length argument — and whether an audience assembled around processed, abrasive pop follows a record that strips the processing out. Wright's own reading of the response so far rejects the idea of a lucky break: the planning was deliberate, and done years in advance.

The show, now

The show is in transition. Through the Dark Crystal V support run in July 2026 it was a short opening set — Wright alone and in near-constant motion, pulling "PQC" and "CUT MY HEART OUT" out of the back catalogue in front of theatre-sized crowds, then reappearing during Ninajirachi's headline set to sing "It's You". The Sydney review in The Music singled out the energy of that opening slot and the crowd's response to it. From November 2026 the format changes: Wright has said the plan after playing "It's You" to 2,500 people at the Enmore is an expanded show with a full band rather than the solo setup, which will be tested on the In Endless Awe & Agony headline dates. Those are club rooms — Metro Social in Sydney on 13 and 14 November with 7.30pm doors and the Saturday all-ages, Brisbane on 19 November, Max Watt's in Melbourne on 21 November, then Oslo in Hackney for Pitchfork London on 4 November with MGNA Crrrta and Touching Ice, Pitchfork Paris on 6 November, and eight North American dates in December. The setlist will lean on material from the debut album, including "PQC", "Love Love (Love Love)" and "Product of Profit (P.O.P.)", all written to be sung without autotune, alongside the older processed songs the audience arrived for. Demand has already outrun the first booking: Toronto moved from the Drake Hotel to the Garrison and Chicago from Schubas to Lincoln Hall, and Toronto, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, San Francisco and the Echo in Los Angeles are listed as sold out as of late October 2026.
