Three careers that met at the Glue Factory

Deltron 3030 formed in 1999 out of three careers already well established. Del the Funky Homosapien — Teren Delvon Jones, born in Oakland on 12 August 1972 — had arrived on Elektra in 1991 with I Wish My Brother George Was Here and its single 'Mistadobalina', made with production help from his cousin Ice Cube. He moved away from that commercial lane almost at once: No Need for Alarm followed in 1993 and brought with it Hieroglyphics, the Oakland collective he co-founded and has worked inside ever since.

Dan the Automator — Daniel Nakamura, born in San Francisco on 29 August 1966, a childhood violinist whose parents survived the Japanese internment camps — had made his name producing Kool Keith's Dr. Octagonecologyst in 1996, and in 1999 co-founded Handsome Boy Modeling School with Prince Paul. Kid Koala, the Montreal turntablist, supplied the third element: scratching used as narration and comic timing rather than as decoration between verses.

The three recorded at the Glue Factory in San Francisco across 1999 and 2000, with Nakamura producing. The division of labour set then has not changed since — Del writes and raps, Nakamura builds and runs the music, Kid Koala handles the decks.

A rap opera set a thousand years out

The self-titled debut was released on 75 Ark on 23 May 2000. It is a concept record in the full sense: Del plays Deltron Zero, a mech soldier and computer prodigy fighting corporate authority that has suppressed human rights and hip-hop alike, and the story runs across the whole album rather than surfacing on a couple of tracks. The sleeve borrowed the Perisphere from the 1939 New York World's Fair — a piece of discarded futurism to frame a record about a future nobody asked for.

Damon Albarn, Sean Lennon, Brad Roberts and Prince Paul all appear. Sales were modest: the album peaked at number 194 on the Billboard 200. The reviews were not. Pitchfork scored it 8.8, and AllMusic and the Guardian both went to five stars.

The Albarn connection paid off immediately. Nakamura produced the Gorillaz debut in 2001 and was credited as part of the band, and Del guested on 'Clint Eastwood' and 'Rock the House'. That single has since done more to carry Del's voice into mainstream rooms than anything released under the Deltron name.

Nine years of delay, then Event 2

Work on a sequel began in 2004 and then stalled repeatedly. The trio previewed material with a full orchestra at the Luminato festival in Toronto in 2012, and Nakamura said that summer the record was finished bar small touch-ups, with a September 2012 release in mind. It slipped by a year.

Event 2 finally arrived on 30 September 2013, continuing the first album's narrative. The guest list was wider than the debut's: Albarn again, plus Mike Patton and Zack de la Rocha, with spoken-word contributions from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and David Cross. It entered the Billboard 200 at number 41 on roughly 8,000 first-week sales in the United States, a better placing than the debut ever reached. Critics were split — Metacritic aggregated 74, AllMusic gave four stars, Pitchfork 5.7.

Then the name went quiet again, this time for twelve years.

Twenty-five years old, played front to back

In April 2025 the trio announced a North American run marking the debut's twenty-fifth anniversary, performing the album in full. The initial announcement listed 16 dates, opening on 18 July at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver and closing on 6 October at Webster Hall in New York, with stops including the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, the Bellwether in Los Angeles, House of Blues Chicago, the Majestic Theatre in Detroit, Théâtre Beanfield in Montreal and the 9:30 Club in Washington. Presale opened on 23 April and general sale on 25 April. By the end of the year setlist.fm had logged 26 shows under the tour.

The format held from night to night. Kid Koala opened the shows himself, playing alongside Lealani, then returned to the decks for the main set. Deltron worked through the debut in its recorded order — 'State of the Nation', '3030', 'The Fantabulous Rap Extravaganza', 'Positive Contact', 'Virus', 'Mastermind', 'Madness', 'Time Keeps on Slipping' — across a main set that averaged around 21 songs, with a single encore of 'Clint Eastwood' closing almost every night.

Reviewers described a small stage with three clearly separated jobs: Nakamura running dense, cinematic beats from stage right, Kid Koala scratching with what one Chicago writer called theatrical precision, and Del out front, sharp and playful against the dystopian material. 'Positive Contact' reliably turned into call-and-response. House of Blues Chicago sold out two nights running in September 2025.

Arena support and headline gaps: autumn 2026

On 3 March 2026 Gorillaz revealed the North American leg of the Mountain Tour with Deltron 3030 and Little Simz supporting throughout. That leg opened on 17 September 2026 at the Kia Center in Orlando and runs 22 arena shows across roughly six weeks, taking in Shaky Knees in Atlanta on 20 September, Madison Square Garden on 29 September, TD Garden in Boston on 1 October and Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on 4 October, before finishing on Halloween night at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.

On 9 June 2026 the group added its own headline dates in the gaps between arena shows, announced on Instagram as playing 'in between our shows with @gorillaz'. Those include Asheville on 22 September at the Orange Peel, Baltimore on 25 September, Atlanta on 11 October, Houston on 14 October and Las Vegas on 21 October. Presale ran from 10 June with a code from the group's site, and general sale opened on 12 June. As of late September 2026, Songkick listed 28 upcoming Deltron 3030 shows — by a distance the busiest stretch of touring in the group's history.

The practical effect is two different shows in the same week: a support slot in front of an arena audience, most of whom came for Gorillaz, and a club headline where the full album run is the point.

The third record, and what the members do between

The album has been promised for years. Wikipedia's account of the 2025 announcement notes the trio working on a third LP to follow Event 2; Nakamura had said much the same on radio in 2018. The most concrete evidence so far came from the stage. At House of Blues Chicago on 26 September 2025, Nakamura played an untitled new track from a boom box and told the room an album was expected in 2026, adding that the group puts one out about every ten years. No release date has been announced since.

All three stay busy elsewhere. Del launched the Manik Mondaze video series in 2024 and co-founded the band thegoodnews, whose EP This Just In! appeared in April 2025. Nakamura produced the Black Keys' Ohio Players in 2024 and was announced in 2025 as a remixer on the 2026 FIFA World Cup theme, representing the Bay Area. Kid Koala's record-and-board-game project Creatures of the Late Afternoon, made with Lealani, was on the merchandise table through the 2025 run, signed copies included.
