Deniz Seki: nine albums, eight years of court, and a comeback booked for an open-air theatre
A Turkish pop singer who built a thirty-year catalogue, lost most of a decade to a drug-trafficking sentence, and spent 2026 moving between a theatre debut, a new single and a hospital bed. Her next listed concert is in Izmir on 26 October 2026.
Backing vocals, then a contest win
Deniz Seki was born in Istanbul on 1 July 1970, the eldest of three children, and finished her schooling at Çamlıca High School for Girls. She married a toy manufacturer, Turhan Başaranoğlu, in 1989; the marriage lasted about three years.
Her working life in music began in 1993, inside the state broadcaster TRT and behind other people's microphones. She sang backing vocals for established names including Kenan Doğulu and Zuhal Olcay — session work that taught her the studio before anyone was selling her name. The break came in 1995, when she took first prize at the Pop-Show 1995 contest, one of the talent competitions that functioned as the main side door into Turkish pop at the time.
Two years passed between that win and her first record. Hiç Kimse Değilim arrived in 1997 and did the ordinary job of a debut: it established that she could carry an album, without yet establishing who she was.
Anlattım, and the records that held
The album that fixed her place was Anlattım in 1999. Three of its songs — 'Aşk', 'Dile Kolay' and 'Zor mu?' — carried her out of the category of promising contest winner and into regular radio and television rotation. It remains the record most often named first when her catalogue is listed.
What followed was a steady run rather than a spectacular one: Şeffaf in 2002, Aşkların En Güzeli in 2003, Aşk Denizi in 2005 and Sahici in 2008. Her writing credits accumulated across these — she composes and writes lyrics as well as singing, which is less common among her contemporaries than it sounds.
The two albums that followed her first period in custody sold better than anything before them. Sözyaşlarım, released in 2011, passed 50,000 copies; İz, in 2014, passed 40,000. In 2011 alone she appeared at close to a hundred concerts and television programmes, an output that reads like someone making up for lost working time. Uzun Hikaye in 2018 closed the run of studio albums at nine, and Best of Akustik, Vol. 1 in 2023 reworked the back catalogue rather than adding to it.
There was screen work alongside the records — the film Can Dostum in 1999, and two books of autobiographical writing, Deniz'in Dibi in 2016 and Mutluluğa Söz Verdim in 2017. In 2013 she sat on the mentoring side of the television competition Veliaht, which placed her in the same role as the judges who had once picked her out.
Six years, three months
The central interruption to all of this is a matter of court record. Seki was detained on 13 February 2009 over cocaine allegations and released without charge, then rearrested by the narcotics squad on 23 February. In February 2010 she was moved to Bakırköy Women's Prison while her trial ran, and she was released on 2 November 2010 after roughly seven months in detention. She then failed to appear in court.
On 22 May 2012 she was sentenced to six years and three months for drug trafficking, with the seven months already served credited against it. She was not in custody to begin it. She was found and rearrested at a hideout in Esenyurt on 15 November 2014, and completed the sentence, leaving prison on 5 June 2017. Her position throughout was that she had been a user and not a dealer.
She did not disappear from screens in the interval — she appeared as a guest on ATV's Eşkıya Dünyaya Hükümdar Olmaz in December 2015 while still serving — but roughly eight years of her career, from first arrest to final release, were spent inside that process. Her writing since has drawn on it directly, and audiences treat it as part of what they are listening to rather than something tactfully unmentioned.
Singles, a French melody, and a first night in the theatre
Since 2020 she has worked almost entirely in singles rather than albums: 'Ala' in 2020, 'Savaş ve Aşk' in 2021, then 'Sızı', 'Beni Derde Salan Gelsin' and 'Aşktan Ölen Yok' across 2022. 'Cambaz' followed in 2023, 'Farzet Ki' and 'Benim Hikâyem' in 2024, and in 2025 'İnsan Lekesi', made with the arranger and producer Ozan Doğulu, which became the song she now opens and closes around on stage.
Her most recent release is 'Seni Bana Katsam', out on 3 April 2026 through Karma Music Recording. It is a reinterpretation of a song first sung in Turkish by Neco in 1977, built on Joe Dassin and Jean Baudlot's 'À Toi' from 1976 with Turkish lyrics by Fikret Şeneş; Serhan Bülbül handled the new arrangement. The video, directed by İmre Haydaroğlu, was made with AI tools and references scenes from Turkish cinema. On 24 June 2026, announcing a further song, Seki said she had not used any AI support in that project and set herself against the technology in artistic work.
The other new thing in 2026 was theatre. On 2 May the production Cevriye was announced — Hakan Alkan's adaptation of Suat Derviş's novel Fosforlu Cevriye, with Larissa Lara Türközer in the title role. Seki's part was to sing across nine performances, her first appearance on a theatre stage, and the premiere ran on the evening of 9 May at the Lütfi Kırdar Anadolu Auditorium. The production committed to covering a girl's education costs for every performer appearing in it.
August 2026: a fall, surgery, and a calendar rebuilt
The summer stopped abruptly. In August 2026, after returning home from a concert in Antalya, Seki fell at her home. The hospital's statement reported that she presented on 10 August with pain in her left hip, that imaging found a fracture there, and that surgery stabilised the break and repaired a tear in one of the muscles that moves the hip. Her condition was described as good, she was walking with support, and discharge was planned within five to six days. Press accounts of the same accident also describe pelvic fracture and spinal injury.
She went home to physiotherapy and did not stay quiet. On 9 September she posted a short performance recorded at home, sitting, with Serhan Bülbül accompanying her on guitar — the arranger of her last single doing duty as a one-man band. 'Music is my reason for existence,' she said of it. 'For me, music means breathing, feeling good, holding onto life.' A day later she described herself as still in recovery but improving daily, and said she had turned the flat into a working room, keeping up voice lessons and rehearsal.
As of mid-October 2026 the comeback has a date rather than a tour. The next concert listed for her is 26 October 2026 at the open-air theatre in Izmir's Kültürpark, with a second date on sale beyond it; around 7,750 people track her for concert alerts on Songkick. Nothing resembling a full 2027 touring schedule has been published.
The show, now
A Seki concert in 2025 and 2026 has been a vocal night rather than a production one: a band, a long dress by a named designer — Gülşah Saraçoğlu for the Alaçatı show on 26 August 2025 — and a set that runs her own hits against covers she likes, with 'İnsan Lekesi' as the song the audience arrives for. That Alaçatı date was reported as one of the busiest of the season, with the crowd singing along across the set and a sustained ovation at the end; her stage energy and the force of her delivery are what reports and comments consistently fix on. No official setlist, running time or support act has been published for the shows now on sale, and the 2026 calendar is short because of the hip surgery she had in August. The next listed appearance, at the open-air theatre in Izmir's Kültürpark on 26 October 2026, will be among her first full concerts since that operation; she has said she is still in physiotherapy but rehearsing at home, and the home performance she filmed on 9 September with Serhan Bülbül on guitar was her own evidence that the voice is intact. Expect the condition of the comeback to be the story in the room as much as the songs are.
