The profile · researched 5 October 2026

The road show that outlasted everything, and the last year of it

Disney's stage Lion King has been crossing North America since April 2002, outselling and outlasting every other Broadway tour. On 11 September 2026 its producers announced the end: the current production plays its final performance on 15 August 2027, after which Julie Taymor's creative team rebuilds it at a different size.

A cartoon handed to the wrong director, on purpose

Disney's theatrical arm had already turned Beauty and the Beast into a literal, costume-faithful stage copy of the film when it went looking for someone to do the same to its 1994 animation about lions. Instead it hired Julie Taymor, a director whose background was in puppetry, mask work and non-Western performance traditions rather than commercial musicals. The brief she returned with was the opposite of fidelity: actors visible inside their own animal masks, scenery that declares itself as cloth and rod and stilt, and a Serengeti assembled in front of the audience rather than hidden behind it.

The production opened at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on 8 July 1997 and reached Broadway on 13 November 1997 at the New Amsterdam Theatre, where the book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi kept the film's shape while the staging dismantled its surface. At the 1998 Tony Awards it won six, among them Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical — the latter making Taymor the first woman to win the directing prize for a musical. The Broadway company later moved to the Minskoff Theatre, where it still plays.

The score was rebuilt as much as the look

Elton John and Tim Rice's film songs survive, but the stage version is substantially longer and substantially more African in its sound, with Lebo M's choral writing running underneath and through it. Four numbers exist only in the theatre: "Shadowland", "Endless Night", "One by One" and "He Lives in You". The opening "Circle of Life" is sung in Swahili, and Zulu, Xhosa, Sesotho and Setswana all appear across the evening, which means the casting of Rafiki has always depended on finding performers who can actually carry those languages rather than approximate them.

The design credits have barely changed in nearly three decades: Michael Curry co-designed the masks and built the puppets, Richard Hudson the sets, Donald Holder the lighting, Garth Fagan the choreography. Longevity has turned two of those credits into records of their own — on the strength of the Broadway run, Lebo M and Fagan are the longest-running Black composer and choreographer in Broadway history.

Twenty-four years of trucks

The touring production now on the road launched in April 2002 and has not stopped since. By the time Disney Theatrical Group announced its closure it had played more than 10,000 performances across 291 engagements in 97 cities, seen by over 28 million people, which makes it both the longest-running and the most-attended Broadway tour North America has had.

The 2026 route has been a sequence of long sit-downs rather than one-week stands, which is what a production of this size requires. It played DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids into late April, then Cleveland's KeyBank State Theatre at Playhouse Square from 8 July to 16 August in a run that was extended before it opened. From there the tour moved through Montreal and Pittsburgh into Indianapolis, where it sits in October 2026, with New Orleans and Louisville to follow and Los Angeles and Chicago among the stops carrying it through to the finish next August.

The money, which is the reason the argument is interesting

The Broadway company passed its 11,000th performance on 20 September 2026 and marks 28 years on 13 November. Through that 11,000th show it had taken $2,211,276,844 over 1,427 weeks, with cumulative attendance of 19,128,525. In the week reported on 6 January 2026 it grossed $3.15 million, an all-time record at the Minskoff for an eight-performance week, and still finished only fourth on that week's chart.

Globally the figures are larger again: 32 productions, more than 130 million admissions, and a worldwide gross above $11 billion. It overtook The Phantom of the Opera in 2014 to become the highest-earning title in box-office history across both stage and film. None of which prevented the conclusion the producers reached about the touring model.

11 September 2026: the end of this version

Disney Theatrical Group announced that the production launched in 2002 will give its last performance on 15 August 2027, and that a "newly configured" Lion King will follow, with Taymor and the original creative team reimagining elements of it. Cities, dates and casting for the replacement have not been announced. Andrew Flatt and Anne Quart put the reasoning plainly: the touring landscape has changed considerably since 2002, and "the time has come to build the show for the audiences of the future", with a commitment to keep touring Disney titles to audiences in their home towns.

Writing on 26 September 2026, Toronto Star critic Joshua Chong read "reconfigured" the way most of the industry has — as smaller sets, a reduced orchestra and cast, and less of the automation that the show's scene changes depend on. His argument is that if the most successful tour in the business has to shrink, fewer large tours will follow it, pushing audiences towards New York and London. The counterweight he offers is that a smaller Lion King could reach markets that currently get no Broadway touring at all, naming Kitchener-Waterloo, Halifax and Regina. Either way, the thing playing in 2028 will not be the thing playing now, which gives the remaining ten months of this route a specific value.

The company on stage in 2026

The current principals are Peter Hargrave as Scar, David D'Lancy Wilson as Mufasa, Gilbert Domally as Simba, Thembelihle Cele as Nala and Zama Magudulela as Rafiki, with Nick Cordileone as Timon, Nick LaMedica as Zazu, Danny Grumich as Pumbaa, Forest VanDyke and Martina Sykes as Banzai and Shenzi, and Sam Linda as Ed. Young Simba and Young Nala alternate between two children each.

Magudulela joined on 13 January 2026 in Sacramento, taking over from Mukelisiwe Goba, whose final performance as Rafiki was on 4 January. It is her eighth production of the show: she has played the part in six languages across seven international productions — France, Spain, Brazil, China, Germany and Australia — and most recently in the Toronto sit-down. Reviewing the Cleveland opening on 10 July 2026, Cleveland Scene singled out her command of the languages, called Wilson's Mufasa regal and credited Hargrave with the required malice, while noting that Cedrick Ekra, on as Simba that night, was outsung by Cele.

The show, now

The show is billed at two hours thirty minutes with one interval, and Disney recommends it for ages six and up. There are no support acts: the evening is the musical, opening with "Circle of Life" sung in Swahili as the puppet herds come up the aisles and onto the stage, a sequence that in both Grand Rapids in April 2026 and Cleveland in July 2026 pulled the house to its feet before a word of dialogue. The scale is the point — over 200 puppets, an elephant thirteen feet long, twelve feet high and nine feet wide worked by four actors, four eighteen-foot giraffes on stilts, more than 300 costume changes, and around 134 people working the production each day, with local musicians folded into the touring orchestra at each stop. Richard Hudson's angular Pride Rock and otherwise sparse backdrops leave the puppetry exposed, which is how Taymor intended it; reviewers consistently note that the hand-carved masks sit above or beside the actors' visible faces rather than hiding them. Act one ends with Mufasa's death in the wildebeest stampede, routinely described by critics as the most unsettling thing in the show; act two is shorter and leans on the stage-only numbers, "Shadowland" and "Endless Night" among them, plus the comedy double act of Timon and Zazu, which the Cleveland notice found the family audience responded to most warmly. Critics in 2026 have been close to unanimous — the Grand Rapids review called it a production that lived up to everything claimed for it — with the only reservations in recent notices concerning understudy vocals rather than the staging.
