The trained tenor who stayed in a rock band: Doğan Duru after Climax and Simulakrum
Doğan Duru came out of Istanbul's opera conservatory and spent two decades fronting Redd; in the space of a month in late 2025 he put out a third solo album and his band's twentieth-anniversary record, and he now plays both catalogues in one set.
Conservatory first, band second
Duru was born in İzmit on 29 September 1973 and took the long formal route into music. He read opera at Istanbul University's State Conservatory from 1993 to 2000, taking both a bachelor's and a master's degree, then studied in Milan at the Scuola Musicale Di Milano with Carlos Del Bosco of La Scala. In 2002 he held an Italian government scholarship and studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory. That same year he passed the Istanbul Opera auditions and was taken on as a contracted artist, and left the post within the year.
The academic thread never quite stopped. He completed a second master's in art criticism, music and performing arts at Yıldız Technical University in 2006, taught voice at Sabancı University in 2007, and lectured on opera history between 2008 and 2009. In 1997 he spent roughly eighteen months acting and singing in the musical Anlat Şehrazat.
The band work ran in parallel from the start. As a student he played with Invictus alongside his brother Güneş Duru. In 1996 he co-founded Ten with Berke Hatipoğlu, later joined by Güneş and İlke Hatipoğlu, and the group worked Istanbul bars until 2002. Somewhere between 2000 and 2004 Ten became Redd and started building an album.
Redd, and twenty years of it
Redd's debut, 50/50, arrived in 2005. Seven more studio albums followed: Kirli Suyunda Parıltılar in 2006, Plastik Çiçekler ve Böcek in 2008, 21 in 2009, Hayat Kaçık Bir Uykudur in 2012, Mükemmel Boşluk in 2016, Yersiz Göksüz Zamanlar in 2019 and Simulakrum in 2025. A concert DVD, Gecenin Fişi Yok, came out in 2008 and the soundtrack Prensesin Uykusu in 2010. Duru has been the frontman, rhythm guitarist and principal writer throughout, through a line-up change in 2014 that left the group as the trio it is now: Duru on vocals, Güneş Duru on guitar, Berke Özgümüş on drums.
Speaking to BirGün on 11 May 2025, Duru described the band as having a fighting character and the two decades as very hard going — he compared it to a twenty-year marriage, where everyone starts with the same motivation and keeping it is the difficult part. He was blunt about the industry Redd entered: six record companies, little appetite for rock because pop made the money, and competition between bands that involved blows the audience never saw. He also noted that Redd had recorded exactly one cover in its career, a Bülent Ortaçgil song, because the point was to build their own material.
The anniversary record, Simulakrum, went out on 24 October 2025 on digital platforms and on vinyl. It gathers the singles of the preceding two years with two new songs, and its title puts the question of whether reality is still real or only its reflections remain. It was recorded at Babajim Istanbul and Pür Recording Studio, mixed by Berke Özgümüş and Metin Kahyaoğlu, and mastered by Evren Göknar and Çağan Tunalı, with cover art by Mehmet Turgut and art direction by Mahir Uysal. The 2025 singles that fed it — Bu Aşk Fazla Sana, Modern İnsanlarız and Üşüyor İstanbul Bugün — each came with a video.
Three solo albums, made almost single-handed
The solo catalogue is short and recent: Epoch in 2020, Kafesine Uçan Kuş in 2022, and Climax, released on digital platforms on 29 September 2025 — four weeks before his band's anniversary album.
Reviewing Climax on 28 October 2025, Cumhuriyet called it a vocal-led concept album and a record that resists on the level of ideas, with writing closer to an electronic and Brit-pop line than to Redd's rock. Duru played almost all of it himself; the one exception is Tamer Temel's saxophone on the track Vampirler. The review's recommendation was to take the fourteen songs in one sitting rather than pick singles out of the sequence, which is how the thing is built.
Duru's output extends past records. He wrote and composed the theme for the Fox TV series Derin Sular in 2011 and scored Cemil Ağacıkoğlu's film Eylül, which won Best Film Music at the sixth Dadaş Film Festival. In May 2025 he also had a poetry collection in print, Tanrım Pardon Der Misin?, and flagged two band projects then in preparation: an album of songs by women composers and writers, taking in Şebnem Ferah and Ajda Pekkan, and a run of symphony concerts.
The symphonic detour
Those symphony concerts materialised. Redd Senfoni played the Turkcell Sahnesi at Zorlu PSM on 29 January 2026, with the İstanbul Symphonic Project Orchestra under Orhan Şallıel and the trio — Duru on vocals, Güneş Duru on guitar, Özgümüş on drums — out front. The programme took orchestral arrangements of material drawn from the seven studio albums since the 2005 debut, Nefes Bile Almadan, Kalpsiz Romantik and Kanıyorduk among them. Doors were at 20:00 for a 21:00 start, entry was 18-plus with ID, seating was allocated, latecomers were not admitted once the performance began and filming was barred.
It was not a one-off experiment. Redd had already put out a symphonic performance of Prensesin Uykusuyum with the same orchestra, which is the clearest place the conservatory training surfaces in the band's work rather than in Duru's solo records.
Where things stand in October 2026
Duru is, at this moment, running two parallel catalogues and selling one solo date at a time rather than a tour. A single show is listed: Komünite in Istanbul on Sunday 18 October 2026, doors 18:30, performance at 20:00, 18-plus. Paribu Pass has it marked sold out.
The pattern of the year suggests that is a deliberate scale. Konserlist logs 53 past Doğan Duru concerts and no future dates at all against his solo name, which fits a frontman who books occasional one-nighters under his own billing while the band keeps a wider touring diary. The most recent comparable solo date was 11 June 2026, also at Komünite, a 21:30 start advertised as the different stops of his career brought onto one stage.
Politically he has not been quiet about it. A 2021 Reportare profile noted that he states his membership of the Türkiye İşçi Partisi openly and argues for organised democratic struggle, which separates him from most Turkish performers of comparable standing, who keep party affiliation off the record.
What the solo set actually is
The solo show is not an acoustic retreat from the band. For the June 2026 Komünite date Duru brought a full band — Doğan Yılmaz on guitar, Ahmet İnce on keyboards, Bilal Topçu on bass and Denizhan Ateşli on drums — and the October listing carries the same description, with Vogue Türkiye's Istanbul guide naming İnce, Topçu and Ateşli again for the 18 October performance.
The repertoire is explicitly a three-way split: the melancholy of the solo albums, the Redd songs the audience already knows, and a short run of chosen covers. The venue bills it as alternative music and rock rather than anything orchestral, so the symphonic arrangements stay with the band project. Audience feedback in public is thin — Biletinial carries a five-star aggregate from attendees of a past Doğan Duru date, citing the vocal and the stage energy, which is a ticketing-site rating rather than a review, and no published notice of the June show has appeared.
The show, now
The current solo show runs with a four-piece band rather than solo voice and guitar: Ahmet İnce on keyboards, Bilal Topçu on bass and Denizhan Ateşli on drums, with Doğan Yılmaz on guitar at the June 2026 Komünite date. The set is billed as a three-part split — songs from Epoch, Kafesine Uçan Kuş and Climax, the Redd material the room knows, and a handful of selected covers — played straight as alternative rock, with none of the orchestral arrangements that belong to the separate Redd Senfoni project. The one date currently listed, Komünite in Istanbul on 18 October 2026, has doors at 18:30 for a 20:00 performance and is 18-plus; the comparable June show at the same venue started at 21:30. There is no support act advertised and no interval billed, and Paribu Pass shows the October listing as sold out. Published audience reaction is scarce: Biletinial carries a five-star aggregate rating from ticket-holders of a previous Doğan Duru date, praising the vocal and the stage energy, and no press notice of the June performance has surfaced.
