Duman after the eleven-year silence: Kufi, Cunda and a full autumn of amphitheatres

The Istanbul quartet broke an eleven-year studio gap with Kufi in December 2024, followed it with their first live-in-the-room record in June 2026, and are now working through a dense Turkish amphitheatre run before a German and French tour in March 2027.

Seattle, a covers band, and a return to Istanbul

Duman's prehistory happened some 10,000 kilometres from the city they are identified with. Kaan Tangöze, born in Istanbul on 5 September 1973, studied tourism and hotel management at Bilkent University before taking a master's in economics at Seattle University. In the United States he played in a grunge covers band called Mad Madame alongside the bassist Ari Barokas. The two came back to Turkey, recruited the guitarist Batuhan Mutlugil, and formed Duman in Istanbul in 1999. The name — smoke — was lifted from one of their own songs, "Hâlimiz Duman".

That American apprenticeship is audible in the records. The chassis is grunge and alternative rock: distorted guitar, loud-quiet dynamics, a vocal that pushes into a rasp. What sits on top of it is Turkish, drawn from folk melody and arabesque phrasing, which places the band in the Anatolian rock lineage rather than as importers of a foreign style. Tangöze plays left-handed, on electric and acoustic guitar and harmonica.

The drum stool has turned over more than the front line. Alen Konakoğlu played on the first album and stayed on stage until 2007. Cengiz Baysal recorded with the band from 2002 and took the live seat from 2007 to 2016. Doğaç Titiz has held it since 2016 and plays on everything the band has released in the current era.

The catalogue the crowd arrives knowing

The debut, Eski Köprünün Altında, came in 1999. The record that moved them from club band to a national proposition was Belki Alışman Lazım in 2002, and Seni Kendime Sakladım in 2005 consolidated it, winning an Altın Kelebek award. Both titles are still fixed points in a set two decades later.

Duman have always documented themselves on stage as much as in the studio. A live album, Konser, arrived in 2003; Rock'n Coke Konseri followed in 2008; Canlı in 2011. In between, the band decamped to Dublin to make the pair of records issued as Duman I and Duman II in 2009. Darmaduman, in 2013, was the last studio album before the long gap. Tangöze filled part of that gap with a solo record, Gölge Etme, in 2015, which carried openly political material about events in Turkey at the time.

Then nothing, for eleven years, beyond the touring. The band never formally stopped; they simply did not deliver another album, and the absence became part of how they were discussed.

Kufi: the gap broken in instalments

The seventh studio album, Kufi, was released in full on 13 December 2024 — sixteen tracks running 75 minutes, produced by Paravan, with the writing split between Tangöze, Mutlugil and Barokas. Rather than drop it whole, the band released it in pieces across the year. A two-song single titled "Kufi" arrived on 24 June 2024, "İçimde Aşk Var" on 20 August, and a five-track EP called Kamikaze on 11 October, leaving eight songs to land with the complete album in December. A video for "Gazze'de" premiered on 4 November 2024.

The record is politically explicit in the way the band's work has been since the start. The title track leans on the term aktrol — the Turkish shorthand for pro-government online commenters — and listeners read it straightforwardly as directed at those in power. "Gazze'de" is a lament about the war in Gaza.

Writing in Milliyet, the critic Mehmet Tez placed the album between private love and public anger, and judged that it had produced new Duman anthems rather than simply restating old ones. He compared "Nerde Benim Kafam" to Pearl Jam in its account of modern disorientation, read the run of "İçimde Aşk Var", "Bir Güzellik Yapsana" and "Haykırdım Ben" as psychological studies rather than romantic ones, singled out the guitar solo in "Farkımız Yok", and described "Canımsın" as a folk-inflected ballad that tightens as it goes.

Pür Cunda Live Sessions: a band recorded in a room

On 26 June 2026 Duman released Pür Cunda Live Sessions, the first live studio recording of their career: seven performances, 33 minutes, cut at the newly opened Pür Cunda Studios on Cunda island near Ayvalık, which gave the project its name. Burçin Esin directed. The production is deliberately bare, the stated aim being to get the stage performance onto tape without the usual studio layering.

The track list is Ah Bir Ataş Ver, Maşallah, Teessüf Ederim, Canımsın, Ben Senden Vazgeçmem, Hele Hele Gur Gur and Hatun. Most of the material comes from Kufi; "Hatun" reaches back to the 1999 debut. Six of the songs were issued with live performance video, one a week, beginning with "Ah Bir Ataş Ver".

Functionally it works as a bridge between the new album and the touring repertoire. Four of the seven — "Ah Bir Ataş Ver", "Hele Hele Gur Gur", "Canımsın" and the Kufi material around them — have been turning up in the live sets through 2026, which suggests the sessions were less a side project than a way of fixing the new arrangements.

Where they stand, October 2026

The 2026 touring year has been heavy and almost entirely domestic. The summer took in Marmaris Amfi Tiyatro on 8 August, Yenikapı Festival Park in Istanbul on 13 August, İzmir Kültürpark Açıkhava Tiyatrosu on 19 August, Life Park in Istanbul on 12 September and Derince Belediyesi Gösteri Merkezi in Kocaeli on 13 September. An earlier open-air show at KüçükÇiftlik Park in Istanbul on 26 June was promoted as the first of the city's outdoor season.

The autumn run is the densest stretch of the year. Antalya's Oktoberfest X festival on 18 October is followed by the Alsancak Tarihi Havagazı Fabrikası in İzmir on 17 October, Bursa Kültürpark Açıkhava on 20 October, Büyükçekmece Kültürpark Kemal Sunal Amfi Tiyatro on 23 October, ODTÜ MD Vişnelik Çim Amfi in Ankara on 25 October, Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Açıkhava Tiyatrosu in Istanbul on 28 October, Marehan in Mersin on 30 October and Gate Beach in Arsuz, Hatay on 31 October. Baku's İdman Sarayı follows on 14 November and Jolly Joker Arena in Istanbul on 28 November.

Beyond Turkey, a European run is listed for March 2027: the Bataclan in Paris on 19 March, TonHalle in Munich on 23 March, Batschkapp in Frankfurt on 25 March, Columbiahalle in Berlin on 26 March and E-Werk in Cologne on 28 March — the kind of circuit aimed squarely at the Turkish diaspora in Germany, and a scale of room they can fill there.

The show itself

The current set runs to roughly twenty songs and is built to keep moving. At Kocaeli on 13 September 2026 it opened with "Hele Hele Gur Gur" and ran through "Anılar O Geceler", "Dibine Kadar", "Yürek", "Elleri Ellerime", "Yürekten", "İçimde Aşk Var", "Kufi", "Olmadı Yar", "İstanbul", "Belki Alışman Lazım", "Ah Bir Ataş Ver", "Aman Aman", "Hayatı Yaşa", "Helal Olsun", "Seni Kendime Sakladım", "Senden Daha Güzel" and "Köprüaltı" before closing on "Her Şeyi Yak" and "Bu Akşam".

That shape tells you what the band have settled on: four or five songs from Kufi placed early and mid-set, where an audience will take new material, and the three most-played songs in their documented history — "Bu Akşam", "Her Şeyi Yak" and "Senden Daha Güzel" — held for the end. The staging is conventional and unfussy; the draw is volume, tempo and a crowd that sings the back catalogue word for word.

Most dates are outdoor amphitheatres or standing-room industrial spaces rather than arenas, and the band have stuck with 21:00 and 21:30 start times through the autumn. Pricing splits sharply by format: the Harbiye seated show on 28 October runs from 1,250₺ in the back category to 5,500₺ for protocol seats, while the standing İzmir date on 17 October started from 749₺.

The show, now

A Duman show in 2026 runs to about twenty songs with very little let-up. The set at Derince in Kocaeli on 13 September 2026 opened with "Hele Hele Gur Gur" and worked through "Dibine Kadar", "Yürek", "Elleri Ellerime", "İçimde Aşk Var", "Kufi", "İstanbul", "Belki Alışman Lazım" and "Ah Bir Ataş Ver" before finishing on the three songs they have played most often across their documented history — "Senden Daha Güzel", "Her Şeyi Yak" and "Bu Akşam". Four or five tracks from Kufi sit in the first two thirds, several of them in the stripped arrangements the band fixed on the Pür Cunda Live Sessions record in June 2026. Staging is plain: a four-piece, loud, no spectacle beyond lights, with Tangöze playing left-handed and switching to harmonica. Venues are mostly outdoor amphitheatres and standing industrial spaces rather than arenas — Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Açıkhava in Istanbul on 28 October 2026 at 21:00, the Alsancak gas factory in İzmir on 17 October with doors at 19:00 and the band on at 21:30, standing only, no cameras or recording permitted. Prices split by format: 1,250₺ to 5,500₺ for the seated Harbiye date, from 749₺ for standing in İzmir. Promoters pitch the shows on tempo and on a catalogue that audiences of several generations sing back; setlists are not published in advance.
