Duran Duran's fifth decade: a disco single, 22 songs a night and a Halloween takeover of The O2

Birmingham's most commercially successful pop export are deep into a 2026 that has taken in a Nile Rodgers collaboration, a 65,000-capacity Hyde Park headline and an autumn arena run that ends with them turning The O2 into a Halloween party on 31 October.

Birmingham, 1978, and three unrelated Taylors

Duran Duran formed in Birmingham in 1978, when two childhood friends — the bassist John Taylor and the keyboard player Nick Rhodes — put a band together with Stephen Duffy out front. Duffy left, and so did a run of other singers and drummers, before the line-up that mattered settled in May 1980 around Simon Le Bon on vocals, Andy Taylor on guitar and Roger Taylor on drums. Three Taylors, none of them related.

What followed was one of the quickest commercial ascents British pop has managed. Thirty of their singles have reached the UK top 40, fourteen of those the top ten, and twenty-one have charted on the American Hot 100. Two went to number one at home: 'Is There Something I Should Know?' in 1983 and 'The Reflex' in 1984. Their only American number one was 'A View to a Kill', written for the Bond film of the same name and released in 1985. Worldwide sales sit above 100 million. More unusual than any of that is the top-five UK album in each of five consecutive decades — a harder trick than a run of hit singles, and a better explanation of why they are still filling arenas.

The records that still do the work

Rio, released in 1982, is the album that broke them in the United States and supplied the bulk of what a Duran Duran crowd now expects: the title track, 'Hungry Like the Wolf', 'Save a Prayer', 'Lonely in Your Nightmare'. The run of singles through the middle of the decade — 'The Wild Boys', 'Notorious', 'New Moon on Monday' — did the rest.

The second act is the part that gets underrated. The Wedding Album in 1993 produced 'Ordinary World' and 'Come Undone', two songs that have outlasted most of the band's early catalogue in terms of how audiences respond to them, and both remain fixed points in the set. Future Past followed in 2021. Danse Macabre, their sixteenth studio album, arrived on 27 October 2023 through BMG and the band's own Tape Modern imprint, reaching number four in the UK and 57 on the Billboard 200 with a Metacritic average of 72 from nine reviews.

A Halloween show that turned into an album

Danse Macabre began as a one-off: a Halloween performance in Las Vegas on 31 October 2022. The record that grew out of it is an odd, loose thing — thirteen tracks made up of three new songs, six covers drawn from Talking Heads, Billie Eilish, the Rolling Stones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Specials and Cerrone, three reworkings of their own material and a mashup. Le Bon has framed it as a party record rather than a grim one.

It also brought people back. Andy Taylor, who left the band in 2006 and has since been replaced on stage by Dom Brown, appeared on a Duran Duran album for the first time since Astronaut in 2004. Warren Cuccurullo, the guitarist through the 1990s, played on it for the first time since Pop Trash in 2000. Nile Rodgers produced and played; Victoria De Angelis of Måneskin turned up on 'Psycho Killer'. A Danse Macabre De Luxe edition was announced on 13 September 2024, adding three tracks including an Electric Light Orchestra cover and a remade 'New Moon on Monday' — both of which have since migrated into the live set.

2026: Rodgers again, and a full diary

The band's first new music of 2026 was 'Free to Love', released on 23 April through Tape Modern, with Nile Rodgers featured and co-producing alongside Joshua Blair and the band. It is an outtake from the Danse Macabre sessions rather than the start of a new album, and it gave them their first charting single since 'Pressure Off' in 2015, picking up airplay placings in Macedonia, Uruguay and Croatia. A remix package, Free to Love: Hot Star Mixes, followed on 26 June with eight versions including work from Horse Meat Disco, DJ White Shadow and Trixie Mattel.

On 5 July they headlined BST Hyde Park in front of a reported 65,000, closing the festival's second weekend with Nile Rodgers and Chic, Scissor Sisters, Sophie Grey and a Melanie C DJ set below them on the bill. Rodgers came back out during the headline set.

Three days later came the autumn announcement. Tickets for an eleven-date UK and European arena run went on general sale on 5 June, with the European leg opening at Oslo's Unity Arena on 2 October, then Stockholm's Avicii Arena on 3 October, Hamburg's Barclays Arena on 5 October and Cologne's Lanxess Arena on 8 October, before UK dates at Glasgow's OVO Hydro on 15 October, Belfast SSE Arena on 18 October, Birmingham's Utilita Arena on 20 October, Liverpool M&S Bank Arena on 23 October and Leeds First Direct Arena on 24 October, then Brussels on 26 October and Paris's Accor Arena on 28 October. It is their first full UK arena tour in three years. Pigeon, a psychedelic five-piece from Margate, support the UK shows only.

The run ends at The O2 in London on Saturday 31 October, where the Danse Macabre Halloween Party lands in the city for the first time after sold-out stagings at Madison Square Garden and Co-op Live in Manchester. The pitch is fan favourites, deep cuts and rarities, Halloween-themed activity through the building, and an audience in costume.

What a night looks like now

The Hamburg show on 5 October 2026 ran from 8.10pm to 9.55pm — one hour forty-five, twenty-two songs including a two-song encore. It opened with a symphonic instrumental reading of 'Free to Love' before the band came in on 'Is There Something I Should Know?' and 'The Wild Boys', then dropped the James Bond theme in ahead of 'A View to a Kill'. The middle of the set is where the curation shows: 'INVISIBLE' from Future Past, the ELO cover 'Evil Woman', 'Lonely in Your Nightmare' sliding into Rick James's 'Super Freak', the dark-phase rework of 'New Moon on Monday', 'I Don't Want Your Love', and 'White Lines' played straight. 'Girls on Film' runs into 'Psycho Killer'. 'Save a Prayer' and 'Rio' close it.

The Hyde Park version was longer — one hour fifty-five, twenty-five songs — and made room for 'The Chauffeur' and 'Careless Memories', with Rodgers joining for 'Notorious' and 'Free to Love' and a fire-eater working the stage before 'The Wild Boys'. Staging is theatrical rather than technological: dancers, flame jets on 'The Wild Boys', the crowd's own torches turned on during 'Save a Prayer'.

Reviewers of the Hyde Park show were close to unanimous. Attitude gave it five out of five and noted Le Bon, at 67, still working the stage without the performance curdling into nostalgia. The Upcoming called them pointedly not the kind of 1980s band phoning it in, and singled out 'Ordinary World' as the night's emotional peak. The recurring note across write-ups is that the newer material sits in the set without anyone heading for the bar.

Standing, and the argument they are still having

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, hold two Grammys from 1984 for music video work, two Brit Awards including Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2004, an MTV Lifetime Achievement Award from 2003 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. None of that is what is selling the autumn arenas; the hit rate and the stamina are.

One piece of unfinished business remains public. Asked about Glastonbury, Le Bon has been blunt about the terms: the band want the right slot, and should not be below anybody on the bill. Four decades in, with a residency's worth of Halloween shows and a Rodgers single behind them, that reads less like posturing than a band that knows exactly what it is worth on a stage.

The show, now

The current Free to Love tour runs about an hour forty-five to just under two hours, twenty-two to twenty-five songs with a two-song encore. Hamburg on 5 October 2026 went 8.10pm to 9.55pm, opening on a symphonic instrumental of 'Free to Love' before 'Is There Something I Should Know?' and 'The Wild Boys', working the James Bond theme in ahead of 'A View to a Kill', and closing on 'Save a Prayer' and 'Rio'. The shape is roughly two-thirds hits, one-third deliberate curation: 'INVISIBLE' from Future Past, the Electric Light Orchestra cover 'Evil Woman', 'Lonely in Your Nightmare' bleeding into 'Super Freak', 'Girls on Film' running into 'Psycho Killer'. Staging is theatrical rather than screen-led — dancers, flame jets on 'The Wild Boys', the crowd's torches on 'Save a Prayer'. Pigeon, a Margate five-piece, open the UK dates only. At Hyde Park on 5 July 2026 the set stretched to twenty-five songs with 'The Chauffeur' and 'Careless Memories' added, a fire-eater before 'The Wild Boys' and Nile Rodgers out for 'Notorious' and 'Free to Love'; Attitude scored it five out of five and The Upcoming called 'Ordinary World' the night's high point. The 31 October show at The O2 swaps the format for the Danse Macabre Halloween Party — rarities and deep cuts, costumes, themed activity through the venue.
