The Divorce Comedy That Outlasted the Marriage: Ebru Cündübeyoğlu's Nine Years as Cansu
A Turkish actress who arrived through a 1993 pageant and a breakfast-television desk, Ebru Cündübeyoğlu has spent since November 2017 touring a two-act corpse-in-the-living-room comedy she helped write — and in June 2026 she saw out the final episode of one of Turkish television's longest-running series.
Heilbronn, Adapazarı, and a sash in 1993
Ebru Cündübeyoğlu was born on 10 September 1974 in Heilbronn, in what was then West Germany, the only child of a dentist, Ertuğrul Cündübeyoğlu, and Hülya Cündübeyoğlu. Her schooling happened back in Turkey, split between Istanbul and Adapazarı, and she took a degree in economics at Uludağ University in Bursa — a route into performance that runs through a lecture hall rather than a conservatoire, and one she has never dressed up as anything else.
The entry point was a beauty contest. In 1993 she placed fourth in the same national pageant in which her mother had placed fourth in 1970, and the placing did what placings did in Turkish broadcasting at the time: it got her in front of a camera. She began hosting that year with the programme Bir Başka Gece on TRT, and from 1996 fronted the morning strand Sabah Şekerleri on atv. Several years of live presenting preceded any acting job at all, which is worth noting, because the timing of a joke and the ability to keep a room going without a script are the two things her stage work now leans on hardest.
The long television apprenticeship
The acting started in 1997 with the series Gülüm, and the part that fixed her in the public mind arrived the following year: Ayşegül, the lawyer, in Deli Yürek. That series was a phenomenon, and it gave her the thing an unknown cannot buy — a character viewers could name a decade later.
What followed was a working actor's filmography rather than a curated one: the teacher Deniz in Koçum Benim, Sevilay in Omuz Omuza, İpek in Yalancı Romantik, Gülbahar in Avrupa Avrupa, Seray in Evli ve Öfkeli, along with Ruhsar and Doğduğun Ev Kaderindir. Comedy, melodrama, ensemble pieces, supporting roles. The pattern is steady employment across two decades of Turkish network television rather than a single defining vehicle, and it is the background that makes her present standing slightly unusual: the stage work is now the more distinctive half of the career.
The stage, and the play she helped write
Her theatre debut came in 1999, as Mihriban in the comedy Fehim Paşa Konağı at the Sadri Alışık Theatre. Kibarlık Budalası followed in 2007, Çalıkuşu in 2008, Müziksiz Evin Konukları in 2015, and Lost in Yonkers in 2017 — a fairly conventional mix of Molière, adaptation and imported American drama.
Then, on 18 November 2017, came Ölü'n Bizi Ayırana Dek, and it has not stopped since. The premise is a two-hander plus one: Cansu and Serdar, a couple worn flat by marriage, throw a party to celebrate the divorce they have agreed on, wake the next morning in the same bed with patchy memories, and find a dead body on the living-room sofa. The comedy runs on two engines at once — working out which of them did it, and relitigating the marriage while they do.
The credit that matters is on the script. The text is by Murat Dişli, Alper Atalan and Zeki Enes Akkan, with Cündübeyoğlu named as a co-writer; Hakan Yılmaz, who plays Serdar, directs; Volkan Aktan completes the cast. That is an unusual arrangement for a commercial Turkish comedy — the two leads are also the author and the director — and it explains why the show has survived nine years of touring without visibly ossifying. The production has been credited to Bult Yapım and Oyun Adamı, with Cengiz Şahin producing and lighting by Umut Külen. In 2022 the play brought her Theatre Actress of the Year at the 2nd International Diamond Awards.
Poems, an album, and a novel about forgetting
The work outside acting is not decorative. Her first poetry collection, Aşılı Kolum, was published in 2005, its material circling childhood, love, separation and ageing. In 2013 she released Sevdiğim Şarkılar, an album of Turkish classical repertoire, alongside the singles Dertlerimi Zincir Yaptım and Kalbimin Efendisi. Her first novel, Ferda, appeared in 2019, built around a protagonist with Alzheimer's disease.
The novel sits alongside the other thing she has made public. Cündübeyoğlu was diagnosed with dyslexia at forty, after decades of professional reading — scripts, autocue, live links — and has since spoken about learning difficulties at public events. An actress who has spent her working life decoding text at speed, discovering only in middle age why it had always been harder than it looked, is a more interesting fact about her than any role she has played.
She married the radio presenter Güçlü Mete in 2003 and they divorced in 2022; their daughter, Duru, was born in 2005.
September 2026: one ending, seventeen dates
The most recent chapter closed in June. Cündübeyoğlu joined the Kanal D police procedural Arka Sokaklar in 2024 — the casting was announced on 9 August that year and confirmed on 18 September — as Candan Ceylanlı, a chief of police transferred to Istanbul from the narcotics unit in Antalya, from a long-established family in Urfa, and written as a hard-edged authority figure the existing team would have to survive rather than befriend. Speaking to Milliyet on 19 December 2024, she said she had found the different sort of role she had been looking for, and the character's sharp exchanges with the regulars were among the season's better-received additions.
The series itself finished on 5 June 2026, ending a run of twenty seasons and 751 episodes. Her character appeared in the last stretch of that run, from episode 681 through to the finale. It is an unusually clean exit — a long-running job that ended on its own terms rather than hers.
That leaves the stage as the main commitment, and the diary is full. Seventeen dates are currently on sale, moving through Istanbul, Sakarya, Bursa, Eskişehir, İzmir, Edirne, Adana, Hatay, Mersin and Tekirdağ between September and December 2026 — a mixture of the play's Istanbul home runs and the municipal culture-centre circuit that keeps Turkish touring comedy solvent.
The show, now
The current show is Ölü'n Bizi Ayırana Dek: two acts, 160 minutes including the interval, rated 12 and over, played by three actors on a single domestic set — a living room with a sofa and a body on it. Cündübeyoğlu is Cansu opposite Hakan Yılmaz's Serdar, with Volkan Aktan as the third party; Yılmaz also directs, and Cündübeyoğlu is one of the credited writers, so the pair have been able to keep rewriting the thing they perform. There is no support act and no interval entertainment; the structure is a whodunit laid over a marital row, with the first act establishing the hangover and the corpse and the second unpicking both. Seventeen dates are on sale between September and December 2026, mostly one-nighters: Istanbul on 13 September at the Watergarden Performans Merkezi and 18 September at Trump Sahne, Bolu's Necip Fazıl Kültür Merkezi on 19 September, Serdivan on 26 September, Gemlik on 27 September, Eskişehir Atatürk Kültür Merkezi on 1 October, the open-air Paribu Vadi in Istanbul on 6 October, İzmir's Kültürpark open-air theatre on 24 October, then Edirne, Adana, Hatay, Mersin, Urla and Çorlu through November and early December. Tickets run from roughly ₺900 to ₺1,500 depending on the house. Audience scoring is high and consistent across platforms — 4.8 out of 5 from 1,164 reviews on Biletinial, 7.8 out of 10 from 446 votes on tiyatrolar.com.tr — and the production has been advertised as playing to full houses for years, which for a comedy touring municipal halls in its ninth season is the substantive claim.
