Leicester, by way of Madras

He was born Arnold George Dorsey on 2 May 1936 in Madras, then part of British India, to a British Army officer father of Irish descent and a mother of German descent. The family moved to Leicester when he was ten, and Leicester — and later the Leicestershire village of Great Glen — has been the English anchor of his life ever since.

He spent the late 1950s and early 1960s working as Gerry Dorsey, a club and variety singer with a handful of Decca and Parlophone singles that went nowhere. National service interrupted the first attempt at a recording career; tuberculosis and years of poorly paid work interrupted the second. The turn came in 1965, when Gordon Mills — a former flatmate who was by then managing Tom Jones — suggested he borrow the name of the nineteenth-century German composer of Hänsel und Gretel. It was an absurd idea that worked precisely because nobody forgot it.

Release Me, and what came after

The break arrived in early 1967 when he was asked to step in for an unwell performer on Sunday Night at the London Palladium, then the most-watched variety programme in Britain. He sang 'Release Me', a country standard from 1946 that had been recorded by others for two decades. His version reached number one on the UK singles chart on 2 March 1967 and stayed there for six weeks, kept 'Penny Lane' / 'Strawberry Fields Forever' off the top — the first time since their debut single that the Beatles had failed to reach number one — and ended the year as the biggest-selling single in Britain, at roughly 1.38 million copies. It spent fifty-six consecutive weeks on the chart and peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The run that followed defined the repertoire he still sings. 'The Last Waltz' went to number one later in 1967; 'A Man Without Love' and 'Am I That Easy to Forget' followed in 1968. ITV and ABC gave him his own variety series, The Engelbert Humperdinck Show, across 1969 and 1970, and by the early 1970s he was a Las Vegas headliner — the tuxedo, the orchestra, the handkerchiefs thrown into the crowd. 'After the Lovin'' in 1976 restored him in America and brought a Grammy nomination.

Later markers are more scattered: a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989; the UK's Eurovision entry in 2012 with 'Love Will Set You Free', which finished twenty-fifth of twenty-six in Baku; an MBE for services to music in the Queen's Birthday Honours announced on 11 June 2021, collected at Windsor Castle. His catalogue is reckoned at more than 140 million records sold worldwide.

A farewell, then a change of mind

Patricia Healey, his wife since 1964 and the mother of his four children, died on 5 February 2021 after about a decade with Alzheimer's disease. The albums that bracketed her illness and death — the EPs Reflections (2019), Sentiments (2020) and Regards (2021), then the studio album All About Love in 2023 — were largely built out of duets and standards.

In 2024 he announced The Last Waltz Farewell Tour, and it was played as a genuine ending: South Africa in July, then four UK theatres in September — the London Palladium on the 8th, Manchester Opera House on the 9th, Birmingham Symphony Hall on the 10th and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on the 12th — before a North American leg that ran into 2025.

It did not take. Speaking to the Tribune Chronicle in March 2026, he described sitting at home for two or three months once the tour ended and 'climbing the wall', telling his management that if they thought that had been the last waltz they were crazy. The replacement was christened The Celebration Tour, and it began playing North American theatres in February 2026.

Faithfully: a rock record at ninety

The recorded work has taken an unexpected turn to match. On 28 August 2026 Cleopatra Records released Faithfully, a fifteen-track album of songs first made famous by Journey, Aerosmith, KISS and Ozzy Osbourne, with three further tracks exclusive to the CD. The guest list is drawn from the source material's own world: Jonathan Cain of Journey, Rick Wakeman, Al Di Meola, Harvey Mandel, Ian Anderson and Eric Gales. One song, 'Always My Love', is newly written.

He was blunt about the reasoning in the March interview: 'I'm doing things that people don't expect me to do.' Separately he released a birthday single, 'I Got You', the last song written by the Grammy-winning producer Larry Butler, best known for his work with Kenny Rogers.

The other recent development is an audience he did not have to go looking for. 'A Man Without Love' resurfaced in 2022 through Marvel's Moon Knight on Disney+, and further placements in Bullet Train and Sharp Objects have done the same job; he has built a TikTok following of more than 200,000. He turned ninety on 2 May 2026.

The show as it stands

The Celebration Tour reached Australasia in mid-2026, and the Melbourne date on 8 July at Hamer Hall — sold out — produced the two most detailed reviews of the current run. Both describe the same thing: seventeen songs, no interval, a five-piece band, and no backing tracks or vocal augmentation.

The reviewers agree on what the voice does now. Noise11's critic noted that it has deepened over the decades into something weathered and gravelly, and argued that the wear adds emotional weight rather than subtracting from it; the verdict was that he remains capable of carrying a room on craft alone. The Rockpit's reviewer went further, calling the performance a candidate for their show of the year and singling out the band as 'pure class in everything they did'. Both noted an audience spanning several generations, from people who bought 'Release Me' new to teenagers.

The set is arranged as a career survey with the new material folded in. After an overture and 'Welcome to My World' it moves through 'Am I That Easy to Forget', 'The Last of the Romantics', 'A Man Without Love', 'After the Lovin'', 'Spanish Eyes' and 'Quando Quando Quando', pauses for Toby Keith's 'Don't Let the Old Man In' — introduced with the story of Clint Eastwood's remark that inspired it — then plays the new single and the Journey cover, before 'How I Love You', dedicated to Patricia, and a closing stretch of 'The Last Waltz', a medley of 'Sweetheart', 'There Goes My Everything', 'Another Time, Another Place' and 'Les Bicyclettes de Belsize', 'Release Me' and 'My Way'.

Where the diary goes

The announced schedule runs well past the album cycle. Asia follows in late September 2026: Taipei International Convention Center on the 23rd, the New Frontier Theater in Quezon City on the 25th, and Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore on the 27th.

North America picks up in October with two nights at the Westgate Las Vegas Casino and Resort on the 2nd and 3rd, then an extended Canadian run — Massey Hall in Toronto on the 6th, Théâtre Maisonneuve in Montreal on the 8th and 9th, Théâtre Capitole in Quebec City on the 11th and 12th and the Casino du Lac-Leamy in Gatineau on the 14th. US theatre dates follow through October and November, including the California Theatre in San Jose, Thunder Valley in Lincoln, Pechanga in Temecula, the Arcada in St Charles and the Des Plaines Theatre, with December shows at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, Westbury Music Fair and the Chevalier Theatre in Medford. Two nights at the Charles Bronfman Auditorium in Tel Aviv are booked for 25 and 26 January 2027.

The venues tell their own story: theatres and casino showrooms in the 1,000-3,000 range, not arenas. It is the format he has worked in since the 1970s, and the one the current show is built for.
