Erik Israyelyan: six fights, four stoppages, and a slot that came off the Capitole card
An Armenian youth world champion who fell out with his own federation, moved to Montreal and turned pro at 20, Israyelyan is 6-0 with four knockouts — and was pulled from the biggest card Eye of the Tiger has put on this year.
A youth champion who fell out with his own federation
Israyelyan was born in Armenia in 2004 and built his junior record at speed. His international career began in October 2021 with a win over Eusebiu Tirzoman, and he took bronze at the EUBC Youth European Championships that same month. In April 2022 he went back and won the Youth European title at 60kg, stopping three opponents inside the tournament, and later that year added gold at the IBA Youth World Championships. Through most of it he trained apart from the Armenian national team rather than inside it.
That independence turned into an open argument. In March 2023 he complained publicly that promised prize money had not arrived and that his results had gone unrecognised, and said he intended to renounce his Armenian citizenship over it. Within weeks the question became academic: by April 2023 he had signed with Eye of the Tiger Management, the Montreal promoter run by Camille Estephan. His amateur record was put at 113 wins and five losses at the point of signing.
Two years between the signature and the first bell
Signing did not mean fighting. Nearly two years passed between the contract and his arrival in Canada, which the trainer Marc Ramsay attributed to "an accumulation of small disagreements" between promoter and manager rather than any single rupture. Israyelyan landed in Montreal on 10 February 2025. His professional debut was booked for 10 April, eight weeks later — a short runway for a fighter who had been largely inactive.
The day-to-day work went to Samuel Décarie-Drolet, who paired the boxing with a heavy conditioning block and reported that his fighter "is very motivated and recovers quickly". The plan was to open at 135lb and work down to 130, with 126 held in reserve. The style was framed as pressure and power rather than movement, and the comparisons offered were to the Montreal-based Romanians Leonard Dorin and Adrian Diaconu — not to the Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr tapes he grew up watching.
The record, fight by fight
The debut did what debuts are supposed to do. On 10 April 2025 at the Casino de Montréal, on an undercard headed by Jhon Orobio against Sebastian Ezequiel Aguirre, Israyelyan dropped Richard Bernath twice and finished him with a body shot at 1:34 of the first round in a junior lightweight bout. He was 20 years old.
The second came quickly. On 6 June 2025, again in Montreal and again on an Eye of the Tiger card, he knocked out the Canadian Alex Gagnon, who came in at 0-3-1. Two fights, two early nights, neither opponent a test — the standard shape of a prospect's first half-year.
Then the finishes stopped, by design or otherwise. He took a split decision over Dylan Schroeder in Montreal on 1 November 2025, and fourteen days later, on 15 November, beat Mario Esparza — 2-2 going in — on scores of 40-36 across all three cards. Two full four-rounders in a fortnight left him 4-0 with two knockouts, with the more useful information being that he could box rounds when the stoppage did not come.
On 9 April 2026 he was back in Montreal and beat Franco Filgueira to move to 5-0. By the time Eye of the Tiger announced its autumn card he was being listed at 6-0 with four knockouts, which puts his sixth win somewhere in the summer of 2026; no detailed report of it has been published in English.
Standing now: undefeated, and off the biggest card of his year
Eye of the Tiger's 8 October 2026 show at the Théâtre Capitole in Quebec City is the most loaded night the promoter has assembled this year: eight bouts with nine belts at stake, three of them world titles. Osleys Iglesias defends his unified IBF and IBO super-middleweight titles against the unbeaten Oliver Zaren in the main event, with Wilkens Mathieu against Vladimir Shishkin underneath and Leïla Beaudoin defending her WBA interim super-featherweight title. Estephan's line on it was that "historic is a term that is often overused in sports, but this time, the numbers speak for themselves".
Israyelyan was announced on that card, at 6-0 and four knockouts, in a six-round super-featherweight fight against Jesse Frank Sallows of Niagara Falls, Ontario, who is 6-1 with five stoppages. It is not happening. FIGHTMAG's confirmed running order for the night reports the bout as cancelled, and the promoter's own published card for 8 October — eight fights from Iglesias down to Jacob Blais against Yoan Trottier — does not include him. No reason has been given publicly, and no replacement date has been announced. The one date currently on sale with his name attached to it goes ahead without him.
That leaves an undefeated 21-year-old a year and a half into a professional career, still matched in six-rounders, still fighting almost exclusively in Montreal, and without a scheduled bout. It is an unremarkable position for a prospect at this stage and a frustrating one for a fighter who already lost two years to paperwork.
What a night with him on it actually looks like
Nothing about an Israyelyan appearance resembles a headline act, and the promoter does not pretend otherwise. He fights in the first half of the running order, in rooms sized for a few hundred — the cabaret space at the Casino de Montréal for most of his career so far, the Théâtre Capitole for the bigger Quebec City nights. Doors and ringwalks are early: the 8 October card starts at 18:30 local time.
The fight itself is short by contract and often shorter in practice. Six rounds scheduled, four of his six wins finished inside the distance, and the two that went the full way were a four-round split and a four-round shutout. The work is forward-moving and body-first — the debut ended on a shot downstairs after two knockdowns. Viewers outside the room watch on Punching Grace in Quebec and DAZN internationally, where the prospect bouts run before the televised main portion.
The show, now
An Israyelyan fight is a six-round prospect slot in the early part of an Eye of the Tiger card, in rooms of a few hundred — the cabaret space at the Casino de Montréal for most of his bouts to date, the Théâtre Capitole in Quebec City for the promoter's bigger nights, which on 8 October 2026 opens at 18:30 for eight bouts. There is no staging to speak of and no support act in the music sense: he is the support, going on before the titled fights. Scheduled time is 24 minutes and he has rarely used it — four of his six wins ended inside the distance, starting with the debut on 10 April 2025, where he put Richard Bernath down twice and finished him with a body shot at 1:34 of the first. The two that went the distance were both four-rounders inside a fortnight in November 2025: a split decision over Dylan Schroeder on 1 November and a 40-36, 40-36, 40-36 shutout of Mario Esparza on 15 November. Broadcast is Punching Grace in Quebec and DAZN internationally. Anyone buying for the 8 October Quebec City card should know he is not on it — his announced six-rounder with Jesse Frank Sallows was cancelled and the final published card of eight bouts does not include him.
