The one-woman Sabahattin Ali: Eyfel Sema Çoruh and the small-stage adaptation circuit

A Turkish actor and director, born in Istanbul in 1999, who has built a career out of carrying literary adaptations alone on regional stages — and who currently has ten dates on sale with the solo Kürk Mantolu Madonna, including Samsun Gazi Sahnesi on 11 October 2026.

Istanbul, a school hall, and a decision made at ten

The biographical detail on Eyfel Sema Çoruh — the spelling every ticketing platform and listings site uses — is sparse but consistent. She was born in Istanbul in 1999. Her first appearance in front of an audience came at the age of ten, at an event organised by Levent Kırcan, and by her own account that single performance settled the question of what she wanted to do.

What followed was the route taken by a great many Turkish performers who do not pass through a state conservatoire: formal acting tuition paid for with family backing, school theatre as the practice ground, and then a self-started period of writing her own short scripts and performing them to camera to build a reel. That reel is what got her noticed by an agency, and the on-camera work that followed led in turn to representation by L&N Menajerlik, which is credited with widening her access to projects.

She has described a set of reference points that are instructive about the kind of career she is aiming at rather than the kind she currently has: Türkan Şoray and Meryem Uzerli, named for their persistence and their standards rather than for any particular role. She also paints, sings and writes, and has said she intends to work across several disciplines rather than settle into one. None of that is unusual for a performer in her twenties; what distinguishes her is that the stage work she has actually logged is unusually demanding for someone at this stage.

Carrying Raif Efendi alone

The production that defines her at present is Kürk Mantolu Madonna, adapted from Sabahattin Ali's 1943 novel for Sempati Tiyatro. On the Biletinial listing she is the only performer credited. That is the whole cast. A one-person adaptation of a novel told through a dead man's notebook is a hard brief: the text moves between a frame narrator, the diffident bureaucrat Raif Efendi, and his months in Berlin in the 1920s with the painter Maria Puder, and all of that has to be delivered by a single body on a single stage.

The production is billed as a drama, rated 8 and up, and the running time is listed at 50 minutes on Biletinial. The İzmir listing for the same title gives 60 minutes and credits Furkan Karayama as director, while Biletinial's crew page for the Sempati staging names Sude Naz Demirci. The discrepancy is the sort of thing that happens on the small-venue adaptation circuit, where a title travels between promoters and the paperwork does not always travel with it. The marketing line Sempati runs — the secrets a notebook carries, an unforgettable love and an enormous loneliness — is a fair summary of what the staging is trying to compress.

Fifty to sixty minutes for a novel that length is a decision, not an accident. It means the Berlin material and the frame narrative are both cut to the bone, and it puts the weight of the evening on delivery rather than on incident.

Her Kadın, and the other half of the credit

The second strand of her stage work is the piece billed variously as İKİ YÜZ TEK DÜZ and Her Kadın. It is written by Ümit Anaç and directed by Şelale Coşkuntuna, with Çoruh performing alongside Furkan Karayaman, who also contributes poetry recitation and additional direction. Mehmet Kaya is credited as producer. It premiered in October 2024 and was still playing to audiences by the end of November that year.

The piece is listed as a tragedy, 60 minutes, rated 10 and up, and it addresses discrimination, violence and harassment directly rather than by implication — the stated subject is women's resilience and solidarity as a force for social change, with each character adding her own account. It played Ahmet Piriştina Kültür Merkezi in İzmir on 16 February 2025, a 19:15 start running to 20:15, with tickets at 125 lira under the Evrensel Çocukları Tiyatro banner.

Çoruh has also worked on the other side of the production. She is credited as director of Masumiyet Müzesi, a three-act adaptation of Orhan Pamuk's novel which ran in Samsun with Furkan Karayama performing and a 60-minute running time. The structure moves from Kemal and Füsun's first meeting through the separation to his reckoning with the objects he has hoarded. The promotional offer on that run closed on 26 July 2025, with 215 tickets sold through that channel alone.

That pairing matters. The same small circle — Çoruh, Karayama, a handful of promoters working Samsun and İzmir — is producing solo and two-hander adaptations of canonical Turkish novels and rotating who directs and who performs. It is a working method, not a one-off.

Where things stand in October 2026

As of early October 2026 there are ten dates on sale. The nearest confirmed is Kürk Mantolu Madonna at Samsun Gazi Sahnesi on 11 October 2026, a 18:15 start, with tickets from 448 lira and roughly fifty seats left at the time of checking. The same title is also listed in İzmir at Nazım Hikmet Kültür Merkezi's Konak Halk Sahnesi, with prices there starting at 250 lira.

The price movement is worth noting on its own. The İzmir promotional run of Kürk Mantolu Madonna was priced at 150 lira; Her Kadın went out at 125 lira in February 2025; the October 2026 Samsun date starts at 448. Turkish inflation accounts for a good deal of that, but it is still a shift from discount-platform pricing towards something closer to a standard regional theatre ticket.

What is not on the public record is any national press coverage, festival selection, award or state-theatre engagement. The documented footprint is entirely ticketing platforms, listings sites and one trade notice. For a performer seven years into a career that began with self-shot scripts, that is where the evidence sits, and it would be dishonest to inflate it.

What the audience numbers actually say

There is one usable piece of reception data, and it is not flattering in the straightforward sense. Kürk Mantolu Madonna holds 3.4 out of 5 on Biletinial from 38 ratings. The distribution is the interesting part: 16 five-star, six four-star, three three-star, four two-star and nine one-star. That is not the shape of a show people found adequate. It is a bimodal split — a clear majority at the top, a hard cluster at the bottom, and almost nothing in the middle.

A 50-to-60-minute one-woman compression of a 200-page novel will produce exactly that pattern. Audiences who came for a monologue and a single performer holding the room rate it highly; audiences who booked a famous title expecting a cast, a set and a full evening rate it one star. Several of the venues involved are municipal culture centres and halk sahnesi rooms where the audience is not necessarily self-selecting for experimental staging, which sharpens the split further.

No published critical review of either production has surfaced. The trade notice on İKİ YÜZ TEK DÜZ from 30 November 2024 described it as among the more successful Turkish plays examining women's experience and noted that it was continuing to find audiences after its October premiere, but that is promotional framing rather than criticism.

A thin paper trail, read honestly

Any profile of a performer at this point in a career runs into the same wall: the work is real, the documentation is not proportionate to it. There is no Wikipedia entry, no interview in a national daily, no filmography that can be verified beyond the general statement that on-camera work exists. Listings sites carry her name on four or five titles; the detail behind those titles is inconsistent, and in the case of Kürk Mantolu Madonna two different people are credited as director depending on which platform is consulted.

What can be said with confidence is narrow and concrete. She is 27 in 2026. She performs solo literary adaptations for small companies in Samsun and İzmir. She directs as well as acts, and she has directed a Pamuk adaptation for a performer who elsewhere directs her. The audience that finds this work either rates it very highly or dislikes it strongly, and there are ten chances to form a view before the current listings run out.

The show, now

The current show is Kürk Mantolu Madonna for Sempati Tiyatro, and it is a solo evening: Çoruh is the only performer credited, delivering Sabahattin Ali's novel-in-a-notebook on her own. Running time is listed at 50 minutes on Biletinial and 60 on the İzmir listing, with no interval implied at that length, and it is rated 8 and up. Staging is correspondingly bare — these are municipal culture-centre rooms and halk sahnesi stages rather than purpose-built theatres, and the production travels light enough to move between Samsun and İzmir. There is no support act; the evening is the piece. The adaptation compresses the frame narrative, Raif Efendi's reticence and the Berlin months with Maria Puder into a single continuous delivery, sold on the line about the secrets a notebook carries, an unforgettable love and an enormous loneliness. Audience response splits sharply: of 38 ratings on Biletinial, 16 are five-star and nine are one-star, with very little in between — a pattern consistent with a short solo monologue sold under a famous novel's title to audiences who may be expecting a full cast. The 11 October 2026 date at Samsun Gazi Sahnesi starts at 18:15, with tickets from 448 lira and around fifty seats unsold at the time of checking; İzmir dates start at 250 lira.
