The profile · researched 6 November 2026

The 4.30 slot: Farrell Dillon's long run on the LINQ

A Chavez School-trained comedy magician with eight seasons of The CW's Masters of Illusion behind him, Farrell Dillon has spent years owning the late-afternoon slot on the LINQ — and is still holding it at The Magicians Room while other headliners at the same address have been cut.

A deck of Garfield cards, then a classical training

Dillon's own account of how he started is unusually specific for a magician's biography: he was twelve, and the first deck he worked with was a pack of Garfield playing cards. What followed was not the self-taught route most comedy magicians take. He went through the Chavez School of Magic, the Californian correspondence-and-residential course founded on manipulation technique — silks, billiards, cards, cane and candle work — and built around the idea that sleight of hand is a craft to be drilled rather than improvised.

That grounding still shows in how the act is sold and how it plays. The material is described by his own camp as real sleight of hand wrapped in stand-up timing, and the pacing is the Chavez discipline run at comedy speed: short routines, visible method-free moments, no long build towards a single illusion. It is also, deliberately, clean — a point his booking copy makes plainly, because the corporate and theatre markets that pay for the bulk of a working magician's year insist on it.

Television turned him into a repeat character

The credit that recurs everywhere is Masters of Illusion on The CW. His own site and his current Las Vegas listings put him at eight seasons of the show, which is a remarkable amount of repeat booking on a format that cycles through dozens of acts per run. The agency pages that handle his college and fair work are a useful index of how long that has been accumulating: Bass/Schuler Entertainment still describes him as a regular across four seasons, a bio frozen some years back, while the Monterey agency Kelly Productions has caught up to all eight.

Outside Masters of Illusion, the broadcast record is spread thin but wide — NBC's TODAY, plus segments across ABC, FOX, ESPN and Food Network. The peer recognition is a single line, and the one he leads with: a nomination from the Academy of Magical Arts, the Magic Castle's governing body, for Stage Magician of the Year. In a field where self-awarded titles are routine, a Castle nomination is one of the few credentials other magicians actually read.

Thirty countries before the Strip

The pre-residency career is the standard working-magician mosaic, done at volume. Kelly Productions' venue list runs from the Magic Castle, the Comedy Store and the Laugh Factory in Hollywood through Royal Caribbean ships, casino rooms in Atlantic City and Oregon, and dates in Beijing. Bass/Schuler, which sells him into the college and fair market, puts the international total at more than thirty countries. Corporate clients named include AT&T and Pepsi.

That spread matters for understanding the show. Cruise ships, student unions and corporate ballrooms each punish a different weakness — ships demand a self-contained act that travels, colleges demand crowd work, corporate demands content that will not embarrass a sponsor. An act that survives all three tends to arrive in Las Vegas already pressure-tested, which is roughly the opposite of the route taken by magicians built around a single large illusion.

Two residencies at the same address

Dillon's Las Vegas base has been the LINQ, in two forms. The first was Jimmy Kimmel's Comedy Club at The LINQ Hotel + Experience, where he held the 4.30pm slot — the afternoon shift that comedy clubs hand to magicians because it is the one families will buy. Las Vegas Advisor still carries that listing: Thursday through Tuesday at 4.30pm, tickets from $54.91 to $86.11 before fees, flagged family-friendly. All Things Magic, which covered the Kimmel booking when it landed, called him one of its favourite magicians working in the city.

The second is a short walk away. The Magicians Room opened on the LINQ Promenade as a magic speakeasy — the entrance is through an arcade of claw machines — and Dillon's site states he was one of its original headliners. He kept the same 4.30pm slot, five afternoons a week, in a 200-seat room with a bar. It is a smaller, closer space than a comedy club stage, which suits an act built on hands rather than boxes.

Where he stands in late 2026

By 1 June 2026, The Vegas Voice found the Magicians Room running a full daily rotation: Dillon at 4.30pm, Matthew Pomeroy and Natasha Lamb at 6.30pm, David Goldrake at 8.30pm, Late Night Magic at 10.30pm, and a Haunted Brunch at 11am on selected days. The write-up framed the venue as close-up artistry and storytelling rather than large-scale spectacle.

Seven weeks later, that rotation contracted. On 29 July 2026 it was reported that two of the room's headliners were ending their runs rather than accept new cost-cutting terms from Damian Costa's Pompey Entertainment, which operates the venue: Goldrake closed on 23 August 2026, and the improv comic and magician Matt Donnelly was not booked beyond 26 August 2026. Costa conceded Goldrake's show was strong but said ticket demand was not there. Late Night Magic was cut back to 10.30pm on Sundays and Mondays, hosted by Doug 'Lefty' Leferovich with The Shocker, Bizzaro Galore and Hollie England.

Dillon was not among the departures. His own calendar has continued without a break — the dates posted as of early November 2026 were 6, 8 and 9 November at The Magicians Room, with 52 performances on sale across the forward calendar. In a room that has just shed two evening headliners on economic grounds, the act that survived is the cheapest to stage and the easiest to fill: one magician, an afternoon crowd, no freight.

What the room says about it

The public verdict is narrow but consistent. His site reports a 5.0 average across 167 Google ratings, and quotes a customer line describing the show as entertaining, hilarious and completely mesmerising from start to finish. The one press notice he leads with is from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which called him a classic magician — ebullient, skilled and engaging. 'Classic' is doing real work in that sentence: the show is manipulation and misdirection done well, with jokes, and not much else.

What is not published anywhere is the run-time. Neither his own site nor the venue listings state how long the show lasts, and The Vegas Voice's write-up gives the start time without a duration.

The show, now

The current show is the 4.30pm slot at The Magicians Room on the LINQ Promenade, five afternoons a week, in a 200-seat room with a bar that is entered through an arcade of claw machines — a magic speakeasy conceit the venue leans on hard. Dillon headlines alone; there is no support act, the evening bills at the same address being separate ticketed shows rather than a shared line-up. The format is close-up and parlour work scaled to a small theatre: sleight of hand plus improvised material worked off the audience, with The Vegas Voice describing it in June 2026 as sleight of hand and improvisational tricks that keep attendees laughing, and positioning the venue overall as close-up artistry and storytelling rather than over-produced spectacle. It is family-friendly and clean by design, which is why the afternoon slot works. Tickets run $54.91 to $86.11 before fees. Audience response is strong and narrowly sourced — a 5.0 average across 167 Google ratings, with reviewers reaching for 'hilarious' and 'mesmerising' — and the Las Vegas Review-Journal's line, a classic magician, ebullient, skilled and engaging, is the notice he puts first. No run-time is published by either the venue or the performer, so the length of the show is not a verified figure.
