Stockholm's monthly tablao reaches its eleventh year, and a midnight slot at Dansens Hus
FlamencoFredag has been Sweden's only continuously running flamenco stage since 2015, built by three women who got tired of waiting for someone else to programme it. On 20 November 2026 it takes over the Studio stage at Dansens Hus as the centrepiece of a three-day flamenco weekend in the city.
Built because nothing else existed
FlamencoFredag started in 2015 at Pygméteatern, a small cultural house on Vegagatan near Odenplan in Stockholm, and the reason given by its founders has never been dressed up: Sweden had no regular flamenco performances, so they made one. The founding trio were dancer Pia "del Norte" Pohjakallio, singer Irene Pelayo Lind and guitarist Afra Rubino — between them four nationalities and five university educations, as the club's own biography notes with some amusement.
The model they borrowed is the tablao, the flamenco club format standard in Spain and in any city where the form has taken root. It is not a dance recital with musical accompaniment. Song, guitar and dance meet on equal terms inside the improvisation, and the exchange between the performers and the people sitting a few feet away is the point of the evening rather than a by-product of it. Pohjakallio trained in Madrid, Seville and Málaga, and holds a dance pedagogy degree from the Stockholm University of the Arts; she is described in her own professional listing as a percussive dancer with flamenco training, which is a more honest description of what she does on a floor than any genre label.
The club has stayed at Pygméteatern throughout, one Friday a month, while taking its format out to larger rooms when invited.
How the evening is put together
At Pygméteatern the structure is fixed and deliberately unhurried. Doors at 18:00, wine and small plates in the foyer, then two sets, then a fin de fiesta — a closing jam in which the separation between stage and audience is dropped. Tickets in the 2023 season were 250 kronor, 200 concession; earlier seasons ran at 160 kronor, and the club's appearances at partner venues have been priced lower still.
The resident group is Tres de Corazones, the same three founders working as a trio: Pelayo Lind on vocals and composition, Rubino on guitar, vocals and composition, Pohjakallio on dance, vocals and choreography. Each month they invite guests, Swedish and international, and the programming has always run on two tracks at once. One is traditional improvised flamenco, the kind where the cantaor sets a palo and everyone finds their way through it. The other is newly made, conceptual, artist-specific work that would not survive outside a room this size.
That second track is where the club has taken its risks. The spring 2023 bill brought the French guitarist Yannick Corre and singer Sara Holgado over from Spain to play newly written music from Corre's then-recent album alongside Holgado's original lyrics and a body of traditional repertoire, with Swedish percussionist Fredrik Gille and Pohjakallio completing the quartet.
Ten seasons and the numbers behind them
By its own count the club has presented more than 200 individual flamenco artists of more than twenty nationalities, and it remains the only continuous flamenco stage in Sweden. Its archive of past seasons runs from spring 2019 through to the tenth-anniversary year of 2025, with names including the guitarists Robi Svärd and Emil Pernblad, dancers Ann "La Pantera" Sehlstedt, David Montero, Magdalena Mannion and Ingrid Mugu, singers Pepita Rohde and Holgado, and the duo Chicos Fritos.
Recognition came early. At the ninth Folk & Världsmusikgalan, held in Norrköping in April 2018, FlamencoFredag took Årets arrangör — organiser of the year. The citation called it an arena and a vital meeting place that draws professionals and amateurs, young and old, with regular, high-quality programming, and credited the passion of the people running it. Operating support comes from the City of Stockholm and Kulturrådet, with the Spanish Embassy backing the current work.
The organisation has since grown beyond the monthly club. It runs touring productions and education programmes, Pohjakallio leads the Northern Flamenco Network across the Nordic region and coordinates artist residencies at Svängrum in Sörmland, and Tres de Corazones have toured at home and abroad, with a residency in Italy and an appearance at the Helsinki Flamenco Festival among recent trips.
A scene that stopped being only theirs
Asked in February 2025 by the Swedish music magazine Lira whether the initial curiosity about flamenco had held up over a decade, the organisers said it had, and that what had been most interesting in recent years was other promoters putting flamenco on stages across the country. They pointed to Andra Våningen in Gothenburg, Tablao Flamenco Malmö and World Sessions Syd as newer rooms, and to a Swedish talent pool that now extends past the familiar names — Olle Pelayo Lind, a mouth percussionist who reached the semi-final of the Cante de las Minas competition, Jonathan Bondesson's ensemble Chicos Fritos, the singer Safoura Safavi, and Josefina Paulson of the Fluencia Quartet.
The 2025 spring season reflected that widening. It opened with a tribute to the guitarist Eva Norée, who had recently died, then gave Pernblad a solo guitar concert and premiered Las Rumberas, a new project by Safavi and Feikje Boertjens. Tres de Corazones played the Folk & Världsmusikgalan in Uppsala on 5 April 2025.
Autumn 2026
The current season is built around what the club calls Den stora flamencohelgen — the big flamenco weekend — running 19 to 21 November 2026 in and around Stockholm, with international artists and Swedish players programmed across three days. The Finnish ensemble Compañía Kaari & Roni Martín appears on 19 November with the production goes ROOTS in collaboration with Västmanlandsmusiken, and again on 21 November at the Global Sounds Festival in Stockholm. The Friday between them, 20 November, is FlamencoFredag's own night at Dansens Hus.
The season then closes in December with Zambomba Flamenca, which sets flamenco pieces against Spanish Christmas songs. It plays Stockholm on 11 December 2026 and Södra Sandby, outside Lund, on 13 December, with Mugu dancing, Olle Pelayo Lind on harmonica and guitar, Kai Sundquist on brass and Tres de Corazones as the band.
The Dansens Hus night
Dansens Hus is not a new partner — the club brought its tablao to the house's Lilla Scen in October 2018, with Sehlstedt, Montero and Pohjakallio all dancing and Roberto Gonzalez hosting. The 2026 return moves it to the Studio stage on Barnhusgatan, and to a 21:00 start, which is late by Swedish concert habits and much closer to how these evenings run in Andalusia.
The billing is Tres de Corazones plus guests: Irene Pelayo Lind and Pedro Niño de la Fragua on vocals, Pernblad on guitar, Gille on percussion, Montero and Pohjakallio dancing. The house describes the evening as improvisation meeting worked-through composition, with lyrical guitar solos, cante jondo and percussive dance, and it ends as the club's nights always end, in a fin de fiesta that pulls the room in. There is one date on sale.
The show, now
The one date on sale is 20 November 2026 on the Studio stage at Dansens Hus, Barnhusgatan 12–14 in Stockholm, starting at 21:00 — Dansens Hus gives the running time as 60 minutes, while Visit Stockholm's listing blocks the slot through to midnight, which fits a club format whose closing jam has no fixed end. It falls in the middle of Den stora flamencohelgen, 19–21 November, with the Finnish company Compañía Kaari & Roni Martín playing either side of it rather than opening for it. The room is converted into a tablao: Tres de Corazones with invited guests, here Irene Pelayo Lind and Pedro Niño de la Fragua on vocals, Emil Pernblad on guitar, Fredrik Gille on percussion, and David Montero and Pia del Norte dancing. The shape is alternating improvisation and composed material, built from guitar solos, cante jondo and percussive dance, with a short spoken introduction before the music and a fin de fiesta — a flamenco jam between performers and audience — to finish. At the club's home venue, Pygméteatern, the same evening runs longer and looser: doors at 18:00 with wine and small plates, two sets, then the fiesta, at 250 kronor or 200 concession in recent seasons. The 2018 award citation for the club described a meeting place drawing professionals and amateurs, young and old, and the organisers said in February 2025 that attendance had held strong since the first season; the club reports its nights selling out.
