Günay Karacaoğlu and the basement flat: an Aziz Nesin revival in its second season
A screen comic in Turkey since the mid-1990s who has built a far darker body of work on stage, Karacaoğlu is currently touring Aziz Nesin's 1970 two-hander Hadi Öldürsene Canikom after an 18-city first season.
Kayseri, Istanbul, and a school festival prize
Karacaoğlu was born on 13 March 1971 in Kayseri and moved to Istanbul with her family in 1976. The first recorded marker of the career came while she was still at school, when she was named best actress at a theatre festival. She enrolled at the Müjdat Gezen Sanat Merkezi theatre department in 1991 and graduated in 1995.
Screen work arrived before the diploma did. Her debut came in 1994, with parts in Şehnaz Tango and Yeditepe İstanbul, and through the late 1990s she worked steadily in Turkish television comedy and in period and farce cinema, including Kahpe Bizans and Dede Korkut Hikâyeleri: Deli Dumrul. The role that made her a household face was the village girl in Yarım Elma from 2002, a performance built on a specific regional accent and a set of physical mannerisms that viewers quoted back at her for years afterwards.
That broad-comedy reputation on television has never matched what she does in a theatre, and the gap is deliberate. On stage she has gone after tragicomic texts — material where the laugh is the delivery mechanism for something considerably bleaker — and the awards she holds are mostly for work that fits that description rather than for the sitcom parts.
Two hours alone: the solo shows
The stage work that set her reputation was Basit Bir Ev Kazası, a one-woman comedy written and directed by Murat İpek. Karacaoğlu played Songül, fifteen years married, working through her unspoken thoughts and abandoned plans in dark comic monologue, and she carried the whole two hours without a break. The production played Kozyatağı Kültür Merkezi among other Istanbul venues and ran for seasons. Reviewing it for Seyrüsefer, Tayfun Kurt wrote that the non-stop two-hour performance had earned the comedy prize she had collected for it, and framed the appeal as watching how large a small woman becomes on a stage.
Those prizes came in 2009, when Basit Bir Ev Kazası brought her the best actress in a comedy role award at the Muhsin Ertuğrul, Sadri Alışık and Afife Jale theatre awards in the same year. A second solo piece, Aşk Ölsün, won her the best actress award at the İsmet Küntay Theatre Awards in 2017, and she took a best comedy actress prize at the Direkt Seyirci audience awards in 2018.
Screen comedy kept paying in parallel. She appeared in the romantic comedy Aşk Mantık İntikam in 2021, and the same year took the Pantene Altın Kelebek award for best actress in a comedy series for Gençliğim Eyvah. Her film credits include Cingöz Recai, Osmanlı Cumhuriyeti and Çakallarla Dans 3.
A farce and a 92-strong musical
Her 2026 has been unusually crowded, with three live productions running in the same calendar year. One is Oyunun Oyunu, DK Yapım's Turkish staging of Michael Frayn's Noises Off, translated by Lale Eren Dalsar and relocated to a Turkish theatre company, with Engin Alkan as supervising director of a collective process and Barış Dinçel on set design. Karacaoğlu shares the leads with Alkan and Salih Kalyon, in a cast that also takes in Ömür Arpacı, Duygu Kurt, Tutku Erten, Sertaç Güder, Zeynep Sevi Yılmaz and Enis Aybar. The adaptation compresses Frayn's three acts into two by folding the backstage and final-performance scenes together. The production has toured beyond Istanbul, including a date at the Vehbi Koç Congress Centre in Eskişehir on 2 April 2026. Reviewing it in Milliyet on 8 June 2026, Asu Maro treated it as a comedy whose intelligence survives both translation and transplant, and credited the localisation rather than excusing it.
The other 2026 commitment was Gırgıriye Müzikali, a large-scale nostalgia musical with a company of 92 performers that put her on stage alongside Müjdat Gezen, Perran Kutman, Gülben Ergen, Ceyhun Fersoy and Uğur Dündar. It played the Ülker Sports and Event Hall on 15 April 2026 and the Harbiye Auditorium at the Istanbul Congress Centre on 22 April and 7 May, then moved outdoors over the summer, including the Aşık Veysel open-air theatre in Bornova on 7 July and the Marmaris amphitheatre on 18 July.
Siyen, Diha and the gas man
The production that matters most to her current standing is Hadi Öldürsene Canikom, which Aziz Nesin wrote in 1970 at the age of 50. Vigor Kültür Sanat opened it on 26 March 2026 at the Ortaoyuncular Ses Tiyatrosu in Beyoğlu, directed and designed by Barış Dinçel, with lighting by Osman Aktan, costumes by Başak Özdoğan and music by Çiğdem Erken.
Karacaoğlu plays Siyen opposite Zeynep Kankonde's Diha: two ageing women sharing a damp basement flat in a 1970s Istanbul apartment block, whose routine of loneliness and withheld affection is broken first by a radio announcement and then by the arrival of a man from the gas company, played by Bülent Alkış. Dinçel has described the text as carrying Nesin's childlike mischief alongside his harder edge, holding loneliness, conscription and old age inside the comedy. Karacaoğlu's own framing of Siyen is a woman sentenced to solitude who covers it by playing games with her neighbour. Around the premiere she said the company was excited to be taking on a classic by a writer of Nesin's stature, and that they felt his work was as necessary now as in any other period.
The first season ran to 18 cities, including Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir and Eskişehir, and closed with a sold-out 18th performance at the 22nd Cyprus Theatre Festival in the Girne amphitheatre, reported on 20 June 2026. Kankonde said afterwards that every date had played to a full house with almost no organisational or technical trouble; Alkış noted that audiences were leaving smiling; Karacaoğlu credited the audience's participation with lifting the piece into something else.
Where things stand, October 2026
The play came back for a second season rather than being retired. It reopened on 8 September 2026 at the open-air amphitheatre in Selami Çeşme Özgürlük Parkı in Istanbul, and the autumn and winter route is now on sale, running from late October 2026 to the end of January 2027.
The confirmed dates take in Beylikdüzü Atatürk Kültür ve Sanat Merkezi on 27 October, the Gönül Ülkü ve Gazanfer Özcan stage at Kadıköy on 4 November, Ordu Kültür Sanat Merkezi on 8 November and Sinop Kültür Merkezi on 9 November, Burdur Kültür Merkezi on 20 November and the Aspendos hall of Antalya's Atatürk Kültür Merkezi on 21 November, the Leyla Gencer Opera ve Sanat Merkezi on 2 December, Gebze Osman Hamdi Bey Kültür Merkezi on 3 December, two performances at the Avlu congress centre in Balıkesir on 11 December, Çanakkale Belediyesi Kültür Merkezi on 12 December, İzmir on 15 and 16 December, Sahne Dragos in Istanbul on 15 January 2027 and BAOB Sahne in Bursa on 29 January 2027. Tickets start between roughly 800 and 1,400 lira depending on the hall, with the top category in the larger Istanbul venues at about 1,830 lira.
Audience scoring is strong where volumes are meaningful: the Biletinial listing carries a 4.8 out of 5 average from 302 raters, 254 of whom gave five stars, while a smaller sample of 23 votes on a sector listing site sits at 7.3 out of 10.
The show, now
The show on sale now is Hadi Öldürsene Canikom: 70 minutes straight through with no interval, rated 13 and over, a three-hander on a single standing set — the damp basement flat of a 1970s Istanbul apartment block, designed by the director Barış Dinçel, lit by Osman Aktan, with original music by Çiğdem Erken and period costumes by Başak Özdoğan. There is no support act and no curtain-raiser; the structure is two ageing neighbours, Karacaoğlu's Siyen and Zeynep Kankonde's Diha, needling each other through their shared boredom until a radio announcement and then a gas-company man (Bülent Alkış) arrive to disturb it. The company reported full houses and standing ovations across the first season's 18 cities, which closed sold out at the Cyprus Theatre Festival in Girne in June 2026; ticket-site scoring stands at 4.8 out of 5 from 302 raters, and the cast's own summary of the reception is that audiences leave smiling. Autumn and winter dates run from Beylikdüzü on 27 October 2026 to Bursa on 29 January 2027, with prices from about 800 lira.
