Three albums in thirty months: Henry Morris takes his Los Angeles noir to Brixton
Henry Morris spent his early twenties recording as Playyard and admitted he was frightened of playing live; by October 2026 he had three albums out, a Giant Music deal and a 19-date European support run ending at O2 Academy Brixton.
A playground with no friends
Morris was born in 1999 and grew up in Los Angeles — broke, by his own account — and reached his own name the long way round. His first record came out under the moniker Playyard, and when he retired it he described the change as a shift in company rather than a rebrand: "Playyard was like being on the playground at recess with tons of kids running around you, but with no friends. Henry Morris is like being on the playground with no friends except this time it's intentional."
Those years put him in other people's orbits. He has worked with Saint Levant since that first record and calls him "one of my dearest friends". What he had not done was perform. "I've always been really scared of live performing, so this is enough, to be honest," he said in an interview published in February 2025, shortly after finally getting on a stage under his own name.
That stage was The Echo in Los Angeles on 6 February 2025, and it sold out. He played guitar and sang, including an acoustic reading of "Paradise". His bassist Cole, whose father works as a production designer, helped dress the room with vintage props — a flower lamp, a bar cart — after the look of David Lynch's films. His stated method was blunt enough: "I'm just really gonna think about what the song's about and hope it translates to the audience."
Jawbreaker, sixteen songs deep
The debut album under his own name, Jawbreaker, arrived on 21 June 2024 through King of the World and ONErpm, with sixteen tracks and "Hollywood Sextape" as its lead single. The credits were unusually heavy for a first solo record: Rob Cavallo, Jesse Ray Ernster, Jesse Fink, Victor Thell, Adriano, Andrew Wells, renforshort and Taylor Ross all worked on it.
Morris's reference points were films rather than records — Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, Donnie Darko, Gummo, Buffalo 66, Natural Born Killers, Full Metal Jacket, plus Quentin Tarantino's direction and Joaquin Phoenix's acting — layered over an Old Hollywood and 1960s visual sense. The writing on Jawbreaker takes in love, violence, addiction and whatever follows; "Paradise" treats an addiction as though it were a romance, written after he lost someone close to one. His own favourite on the record is "He Could Never Love You", written at a low point after touring, about which he said: "if I make this, I don't give a shit if anybody else likes it." What he wanted the album to feel like, he said, was "a guttural, visceral feeling of fear being slowly numbed away by a small dose of opium and a beautiful sunset in the desert."
The record travelled through college and non-commercial radio — KCRW, KITS, KPNT, KUCR and KACV among the stations spinning "Sweet N Low" and "American Baseball" — and carried him past 313,000 monthly Spotify listeners, with Greg Gonzalez of Cigarettes After Sex and Michael Bublé both flagged as early supporters. Booking went to Jeff Frasco at CAA; management was split between Spencer Cait and Cavallo's Done Deal.
The second record tightens the frame
Talking about the follow-up in 2024, Morris described something darker and "more outwardly violent" than Jawbreaker, with a visual idea that mixed CBGB-era New York punk with Studio 54 disco under the working title A Murder At Studio 54.
What actually appeared on 24 October 2025 was Late Bloomer, Early Death: eight tracks — "Venice Beach", "Church Bells", "Honey Baby", "Kids Say", "So Romantic", "Kiss Me Goodbye", "The End" and "LA at Night" — trailed through 2025 by "Church Bells" and "So Romantic" as singles. It is a shorter, more disciplined record than the sprawl of the debut, and it supplies most of what the live set now leans on; "Honey Baby" opens his shows, and "Church Bells" sits early in them. The Chris Isaak-meets-Lana Del Rey comparison that followed Jawbreaker stuck to it too, which is roughly the register: reverbed guitar, a crooner's delivery, Los Angeles as a crime scene.
Giant Music, and a very loud 2026
On 2 April 2026, Pollstar reported that Morris had signed to Giant Music, the independent label the Azoff Company founded in 2022, whose roster includes Cash Cobain, Ruel, Deb Never and Empress Of. He released "Good Girls Go To Heaven" the same day. Cavallo stayed on as manager — a producer whose credits run through Green Day, My Chemical Punk-era My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park and Paramore, which tells against reading Morris purely as a bedroom-pop act.
The singles then came at a pace: "Drugs and Money", "Sex with my Ex", "My Girlfriend" with Ella Boh, "One Night Stand", "Crawling Back to You" and, on 16 October 2026, "High All The Time" with G-Eazy. Morris has said he reached G-Eazy through Instagram and sent demos; the finished track, produced by Kevin White, is about "the endless pursuit of the honeymoon phase, when romantic excitement begins resembling an addiction". By mid-October his catalogue had passed 100 million streams since the April signing, with "My Girlfriend" and "One Night Stand" accounting for more than five million between them.
Kiss Me Extra Hard
The third album, Kiss Me Extra Hard, came out on 23 October 2026 — eleven tracks, 32 minutes and 57 seconds — produced by Morris with Kevin White and Taylor Ross, and featuring G-Eazy and Ella Boh. Five of the eleven had already been released as singles before the album landed, which is now the standard way these records get built.
"Rather Fight" is the focus track, and Morris's explanation of it is the plainest summary of the album's subject: "This song is about a girl I loved with all my heart. I'd rather be arguing with her than laughing with someone else." He framed the whole thing the same way, down to the runtime: "In 32 minutes and 57 seconds, Kiss Me Extra Hard is a summary of painful lessons." And: "All the drugs, sex, and money in the world don't compare in the slightest to a moment alone with the woman I loved in complete silence." The theme — obsession set against intimacy, and what possessions fail to replace — runs through the sequencing rather than being confined to one or two songs.
Opening for Artemas, nightly
Morris spent autumn 2026 in front of Artemas on the LOVERCORE / GETTING UP TO NO GOOD tour, a run of large clubs and theatres that took in the Aztec Theatre in San Antonio on 18 September, Stubb's in Austin on 19 September, The Fillmore Minneapolis on 29 September, the Tabernacle in Atlanta on 7 October, Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia on 10 October and Toad's Place in New Haven on 11 October.
The European and UK leg runs for 19 dates from 12 November to 14 December 2026, with Le Bataclan in Paris, SaSaZu in Prague, two nights at Huxleys Neue Welt in Berlin, O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester and a finish at O2 Academy Brixton. Prague on 22 November and Warsaw on 23 November had sold out ahead of the leg. Ella Boh, who sings on "My Girlfriend", appears on selected shows.
Reviewers covering the American leg treated him as more than a warm-up. One writing on the New Haven show noted the crowd chanting his name before he appeared and singing along to almost every line; another, covering the Milwaukee date at The Rave, wrote that "there was power in that voice, delivered with a smoothness that made the music feel almost weightless". For a performer who said in early 2025 that he was frightened of playing live, that is a short distance covered.
The show, now
Morris is currently playing a support slot rather than a headline set, opening for Artemas on the LOVERCORE / GETTING UP TO NO GOOD tour in theatres and large clubs. He works as a three-piece — himself on vocals, Dean on bass, Seamus on drums — with no large production of his own; at the New Haven show at Toad's Place on 11 October 2026 he came on after the band, opened with "Honey Baby", jumped in time with his bassist, named his players from the stage and handed the night over to "Big Poppa Artemas". The set draws mainly on Late Bloomer, Early Death and the 2026 singles — "Honey Baby" and "Church Bells" are fixtures — and mixes uptempo material with at least one slower turn, which reviewers said held the room rather than losing it. A writer covering the Milwaukee date at The Rave described him arriving in baggy trousers and a loose jacket that came off to a white tank top, and rated the voice above everything else: "There was power in that voice, delivered with a smoothness that made the music feel almost weightless." In New Haven the crowd chanted his name before he appeared and sang along to nearly every lyric; one Bandsintown commenter called him "the best opener for my first ever concert". The European and UK leg runs 19 dates from 12 November to 14 December 2026 — Paris's Bataclan, SaSaZu in Prague, two nights at Huxleys Neue Welt in Berlin, O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester, finishing at O2 Academy Brixton — with Prague (22 November) and Warsaw (23 November) already sold out, and Ella Boh on selected shows.
