The Hamburg slam that bans sad poems

HoneyMic is the one-woman promoter behind Honeyslam, a monthly poetry slam in Hamburg, Berlin and Lüneburg built on a single prohibition: nothing miserable. Three years after the idea arrived, its calendar now runs unbroken from autumn 2026 into spring 2027.

An idea from the winter of 2023

Most live-literature promoters start with a room or a roster. HoneyMic started with a ban. Ida Mews had the idea in the winter of 2023 and put the first Honeyslam together in Hamburg with the help of a few friends — a poetry slam in which performers could do anything they liked except bring the mood down. It worked well enough, and was enough fun to run, that a second season followed, and then a compilation bill drawn from the best of what had already been staged.

What grew out of that is not a collective or a label but a small registered business. HoneyMic e.K. sits on the Hamburg commercial register under HRA 131586 with Mews as sole proprietor, its administrative address a mail-handling office in Greven in Westphalia while the shows themselves stay in the north and in Berlin. The company now describes itself as a platform for shows, slam poetry and event projects rather than a single night, and it carries several formats under one roof.

One rule, and a knitted bee

The slogan does the explaining: poetry slam wants to be everything, but Honeyslam wants to be happy. The organisers pitch the night as the last bastion of unchecked good cheer and an oasis of relief after a grinding day's work. Texts may be funny, magical, romantic, gossipy or outright dramatic. What they may not be is sad. That is the whole constraint, and it is applied at the booking stage rather than policed from the stage — the poets are hand-picked, and they perform work they have written themselves.

The prize is deliberately small. Winners take fame, honour and a lovingly knitted fabric bee. In Hamburg and Lüneburg the audience decides; at the Albatros Café night the entire room votes on who reaches the final, with some ticket-holders carrying more weight than others in that decision. Early Hamburg listings described a jury convincing to be done as well as a crowd, which fits a format that has been tightened rather than reinvented as it moved rooms.

That constraint is the thing worth taking seriously about the operation. A German slam bill will typically carry at least one set that reaches for grief or politics, and the compère's job is to manage the swing between registers. Removing the swing removes the compère's hardest problem and changes what a booking looks like — it rules out a large share of the circuit's most practised material, which means the night has to keep finding poets who are funny on purpose rather than funny between serious pieces.

Three cities on a monthly clock

The Hamburg edition is the original and the oddest-looking. It runs at LüttLiv on Maurienstraße in Barmbek, a minute from the U- and S-Bahn station, in a room with a circus tent pitched inside it and a bar that runs from tea to beer. It takes the third Sunday of the month. In March 2025 the show ran from 18.30 to 21.00 with tickets from €10; the current listings start at 19.00 and price it at €11 in advance or €15 on the door, with dates booked from 18 October 2026 through to 18 April 2027.

Lüneburg follows the next evening in the cycle — the third Monday of the month at PONS, 19.00, same €11 advance and €15 door split, with dates running from 19 October 2026 to 17 May 2027. Berlin takes the last Monday at Tati on Metzer Straße in Prenzlauer Berg, in the basement space the venue bills as Tati goes underground, a room that otherwise hosts stand-up. The 2026 Berlin dates ran 23 February, 30 March, 27 April, 25 May and 29 June before the summer gap, then 28 September, 26 October, 30 November and 28 December.

Berlin has also been getting later. The 30 March 2026 edition was listed 19.00 to 21.00; by 30 November the listing reads doors at 19.30 for a 20.00 start and a 22.00 finish, with seating unreserved and advance tickets between €11 and €14. The two-hour frame has held steady across the year even as the clock moved.

Beyond the bee

Honeyslam is the flagship, not the whole business. HoneyMic also runs a slam at the Albatros Café on Wagnerstraße in Eilbek — a Wednesday-evening residency at 19.00 with dates on 5 August, 7 October, 4 November and 2 December 2026, then 6 January and 3 February 2027. It is the format where the audience's role is most explicit, voting the finalists through rather than simply picking a winner at the end.

The company lists several further formats alongside those: a Summer Slam, an Art Light Slam, a Poetry Fight Night, an Erotik Slam, and bingo nights including a singles edition. Not all of them appear on the public calendar at any given moment, and the bingo strand is the clearest sign that this is a promoter of light-entertainment evenings that happens to have started in literature rather than a literary organisation branching out.

A four-person operation

The team page is short and tells its own story. Mews is listed as founder and host, and also carries booking, organisation, accounting, social media and the concept work. Louisa and Elvis handle evening management — the door, the room, the running of the night. Sophie looks after merchandise and pricing under the handle stitchwithsophie. That is the organisation behind four monthly residencies in three cities.

Ticketing runs through Universe, with the advance tier consistently cheaper than the door price, and the site keeps an open call for performers and for collaboration enquiries rather than working from a closed roster. One listing platform logged HoneyMic with 25 upcoming events on its books, which is roughly the scale the published calendars imply. Nothing about the setup suggests outside investment or agency backing; the economics appear to be a sub-€15 ticket in rooms that hold a restaurant's worth of people, repeated often.

Where it stands in autumn 2026

As of October 2026 the calendar is the fullest it has been. Hamburg resumes on 18 October and is sold through to April 2027; Lüneburg resumes on 19 October and is sold through to May 2027; Berlin has the last three Mondays of the year held at Tati; the Albatros night runs on into February 2027. Taken together that is more than forty dates on sale at once from a four-person company — a booking pattern that only makes sense if the rooms are filling.

What is absent is criticism. There are no published reviews of a Honeyslam in the German press that can be found; the coverage is listings coverage, carried by the Hamburg and Berlin city guides, the regional what's-on sites and the tourist boards, all of which reproduce the promoter's own framing of the night. The usable evidence for how the show plays is therefore circumstantial rather than critical: the same three venues have kept taking the night back month after month since 2024, the dates now extend two full seasons ahead, and the only things that have changed are start times nudging later and the advance price moving from €10 to €11. For a format that could easily have been a one-joke night, that is the more telling record.

The show, now

A Honeyslam runs about two hours with no interval: Berlin opens its doors at 19.30 for a 20.00 start and finishes at 22.00, while Hamburg and Lüneburg start at 19.00, Hamburg having shifted from an 18.30 start in 2025. The rooms are small and none of them is a theatre — LüttLiv in Barmbek seats the audience inside a circus tent pitched indoors, with a bar running from tea to beer; Berlin uses the basement of the Tati stand-up club on Metzer Straße with unreserved seating; Lüneburg uses PONS. There is no support act in the music sense: a handful of hand-picked poets perform their own texts back to back and the host, usually Ida Mews, carries the links. One rule governs the material — nothing sad, though funny, magical, romantic, gossipy and melodramatic are all fair game. The audience votes, and at the Albatros Café night the whole room votes the finalists through, with some ticket-holders holding extra sway. The winner leaves with a knitted fabric bee. Tickets are €11 to €14 in advance and €15 on the door. No critical reviews of the night have been published; the available signal is that all three cities have renewed it monthly and are now selling dates into spring 2027.
