Between Athens and Los Angeles

Ioanna Gika’s path into alternative music runs between Greece and the United States. Raised between the two and in parts of Asia, she’s spoken about summers in Greece that shaped her writing – and about composing what became her solo album while there – after years fronting the LA duo IO Echo with Leopold Ross. IO Echo released the album Ministry of Love in 2013 on IAMSOUND and travelled hard: Coachella and Lollapalooza stints, PLAY MOCA curation at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and supports for Nine Inch Nails, Garbage, Florence + the Machine and more. The pivot to solo work arrived gradually, with a first single in 2018 followed by a full-length debut the following year.

Thalassa and what it set in motion

Gika’s debut solo album, Thalassa, arrived on 5 April 2019 through Sargent House. Written largely in Greece and titled after the Greek word for “sea”, it runs 35 minutes across 10 tracks and foregrounds voice, electronics and strings with a tidal sense of movement. As a release it was treated as a step-change from IO Echo’s work: Pitchfork’s review framed it as a shedding of earlier “orientalizing” motifs in favour of something more personal and oceanic. Apple Music lists the release date and length; press at the time highlighted the self-produced vision and the Greek etymology.

Singles sketched the world around the record. Roseate arrived in October 2018, followed by Swan and Messenger into 2019, with Devendra Banhart also issuing a cover of Swan in 2020; Gika has kept the material alive with a 2020 Black Taffy remix of Out of Focus and a Bandcamp release of Swan credited to “Devendra Banhart (Cover) and Ioanna Gika (Original)”. Time recommended the album on release weekend; Bandcamp Daily later picked it as Album of the Day.

Her writing has threaded into film and television. She performed Gone for the Snow White & the Huntsman soundtrack in 2012 and, crucially, the song was one of 75 works listed by the Academy as “in contention” for Original Song at the 85th Oscars in 2013 – a longlist recognition, not a nomination. In 2021, she was credited alongside Ross on Netflix’s Britney vs Spears documentary.

The Dior stadium moment

On 17 June 2021, Dior staged its Cruise 2022 show at Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium. Footage of the event credits “Music by Ioanna Gika”, and Greek public broadcaster ERT reported that the Greek–American artist introduced the show with the Athens City Symphony before 85 models circulated the stadium track – a high-fashion staging that placed her voice and compositions in front of a global audience. British Vogue’s wrap noted her artistic presence at the show.

Back on the road: Air’s Moon Safari shows

After pandemic-era work, Gika returned to regular stages as the opener on selected North American dates of Air’s Moon Safari live project. In Phoenix, on 26 September 2025, Phoenix New Times published a review and photo gallery explicitly identifying “guest Ionna Gika” as the opener, while in San Diego a ListenSD concert review (published 3 October 2025) described a “mesmerizing performance” that set the tone for the night. A local San Diego piece for JankySmooth, dated 15 October 2025, went further on specifics: Gika in a white gown, smoke rising around the stage, and a short set centred on Thalassa material including Out of Focus and Roseate.

Other evidence of the run comes via listings and fan reports that place her on late-September 2025 shows in Sandy, Utah, San Francisco and elsewhere. The picture that emerges is of a concise, atmospheric opener slot that readied seated theatres for Air’s album-in-full performances.

Where she stands now

Through autumn 2026 Gika moves from theatres to amphitheatres as special guest on Beck’s Ride Lonesome tour. Beck’s official site shows her name attached to every North American date through late September and October, including the Santa Barbara Bowl on 22 September 2026, Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre on 23 September, Red Rocks Amphitheatre on 1 October, two nights at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre on 9–10 October, and Fox Theatre, Detroit on 12 October. Listings on 313 Presents (Detroit), Live Nation (Los Angeles) and Red Rocks / Arts & Venues Denver corroborate dates and the billing. The itinerary opens at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre on 16 September and closes on 31 October in Nashville.

For an artist whose full-length dates to 2019, the sequence matters: it places Gika’s solo work directly in front of large, cross‑generational alt‑rock audiences ahead of what she has previously teased as further studio work. The label Sargent House continues to host her official page and discography; her Bandcamp remains an active repository for releases and special versions.

What the work adds up to

Across Thalassa and the intervening commissions and live work, Gika’s signature has been to set a commanding lead vocal inside arrangements that ebb and break like waves: choral harmonies, vertiginous swells of electronics, sudden hushes that leave only a single line. Reviews in 2019 heard the scale and clarity of the record; live write‑ups in 2025 clocked how that sound translates as a prelude – fifteen or so minutes in, theatres are quiet, phones down, voices stilled. The next phase is about presence: setlists that draw smartly from a compact catalogue placed in front of rooms and bowls Beck fills with devotees of Sea Change and Morning Phase. It’s pragmatic, but also a bet that a concentrated 30–40 minutes of Thalassa-era material can leave a mark. The evidence from 2025 suggests it can.
