Frankfurt to Fayetteville

Jermaine Lamarr Cole was born on 28 January 1985 at a United States military base in Frankfurt, then West Germany, to an Army veteran father and a mother who worked for the postal service in Michigan. The family moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina when he was eight months old, and that city — its streets, its road names, its Market House — has supplied the raw material for almost everything he has recorded since.

He left for St John's University in New York, starting in computer science before switching to communications, and graduated magna cum laude in 2007 with a 3.8 average. The university withheld the physical degree until 2015 over an unpaid library debt, a detail he has never tried to hide. The route into rap ran through two mixtapes that still circulate as reference points, The Warm Up in 2009 and Friday Night Lights in 2010. In 2009 he signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation as the label's first artist.

Seven albums, seven number ones

The run is unusually consistent. Cole World: The Sideline Story arrived in 2011, Born Sinner in 2013, 2014 Forest Hills Drive in 2014, 4 Your Eyez Only in 2016, KOD in 2018, The Off-Season in 2021 and The Fall-Off in 2026. All seven entered the Billboard 200 at number one.

2014 Forest Hills Drive remains the record the live show is built around — 'Love Yourz', 'No Role Modelz', 'Wet Dreamz', 'A Tale of 2 Citiez', 'G.O.M.D.' and 'Fire Squad' all still appear nightly twelve years on. KOD produced a statistical oddity in 2018: six songs from it charted inside the Billboard Hot 100's top 20 simultaneously, something no act had managed since the Beatles in 1964. Across all of it he has won two Grammy Awards from 17 nominations.

The other half of the career is structural. Dreamville Records, which he founded, has released work by JID, Ari Lennox, Bas and EarthGang, all of whom have fed back into his own records and his stages. He also runs the Dreamville Foundation in Fayetteville and holds a minority stake in the Charlotte Hornets.

The gap years

Between The Off-Season in 2021 and The Fall-Off in 2026 the most discussed thing Cole did was retract something. Might Delete Later, a mixtape released in April 2024, contained '7 Minute Drill', a response to Kendrick Lamar. Two days later, on the Dreamville Festival stage in Raleigh, he apologised for it in front of his own audience; the track was pulled from streaming services shortly afterwards. It cost him standing with a section of rap's commentariat and gained him a different kind of credit elsewhere.

He also kept playing competitive basketball, signing with the Rwanda Patriots in 2021, the Scarborough Shooting Stars in Canada in 2022 and the Nanjing Monkey Kings in China in 2026. The upshot for anyone who follows the touring side is simple: between the Off-Season Tour in 2021 and this year, there was no solo headline run at all.

The Fall-Off, and what it actually is

The album had been in development since 2016 and was named on record in 2018, on '1985 (Intro to The Fall Off)'. It finally appeared on 6 February 2026 through Cole World, Dreamville and Interscope: 24 tracks, 101 minutes, split across two discs titled 29 and 39 after his ages on two separate returns to Fayetteville. Guests include Burna Boy, Erykah Badu, Future, Morray, Petey Pablo, PJ and Tems, with production from The Alchemist, Boi-1da, T-Minus, Vinylz, FnZ, Beat Butcha and Omen.

It opened at number one with 280,000 album-equivalent units, his seventh chart-topper, and 21 of its 24 tracks reached the Hot 100, led by 'Two Six' at number 16. 'Who TF Iz U' went to radio on 11 February 2026 and 'Legacy' followed on 19 May.

Critics split down the middle rather than converging. The album holds a Metacritic score of 67 from nine reviews: Clash went to 9/10, while Pitchfork gave it 5.3 and argued the record's ambition 'doesn't materialize in meaningful doses'. The framing Cole chose — this is the last one, the discography is closed — guaranteed that every reviewer graded a career rather than a release.

Where things stand, end of September 2026

The Fall-Off World Tour was announced on 16 February 2026 and runs to 73 shows over four continents, from 10 July to 12 December. The North American leg accounted for 45 of them, opening at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte and taking in a five-night New York cluster — Barclays Center on 31 July and 1 August, Madison Square Garden on 2 and 4 August, UBS Arena on 5 August — before double bookings at Crypto.com Arena and the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles in early September.

The leg was interrupted on 28 August, when the Golden 1 Center show in Sacramento was cancelled after Jarlath Parkinson, 66, of Jackson, South Carolina, was killed when the rig he was driving with the production's gear from Seattle drifted onto the shoulder of the interstate and overturned. The California Highway Patrol said the cause was undetermined. Dreamville said its thoughts were with his family; Ticketmaster buyers were refunded automatically. The tour resumed the following night in Oakland.

It closed in America on 23 September at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, a sold-out house of nearly 9,000 and his first concert in the city in more than a decade. Europe is next: 20 shows between 7 October and 12 November, including the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on 12 and 13 October, the O2 in London on 19 and 20 October and again on 2 November, and the Accor Arena in Paris on 5 November, plus Dublin, Glasgow, Manchester, Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Zurich. Seven Oceania dates follow between 25 November and 6 December in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland, and the whole thing ends at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on 12 December.

How the set is built

The show is arranged in three movements. It opens with six consecutive songs from The Fall-Off — '39 Intro' into 'Two Six', 'SAFETY', 'Run a Train', 'Poor Thang' and 'Legacy' — then reverses into the back catalogue for the long middle stretch: 'A Tale of 2 Citiez', 'Fire Squad', 'MIDDLE CHILD', 'Lights Please', 'In the Morning', 'Work Out', 'She Knows', 'Wet Dreamz'. Guest verses he cut for other people get performed as covers, so 'a lot', 'Johnny P's Caddy', 'The London' and 'Planez' all turn up. The last four songs are fixed: 'Love Yourz', 'Power Trip', 'No Role Modelz', 'Quik Stop'. The tour average is 33 songs and there is no encore.

In Fayetteville the staging was explicitly local — a large replica of the city's Market House and a Ford Escort suspended above the stage, the model of car he drove before any of this worked. He walked in through the stands rather than appearing on a riser, pulled audience members up to rap verses with him, and brought Petey Pablo out for 'Raise Up' and 'Old Dog'. He told the crowd he had graduated from Terry Sanford High School on that same stage, and that of every city on the leg, 'I think they feel me, but I know they're not going to feel me like y'all.'
