Jo Koy: thirty-seven years in, the first comic to fill SoFi Stadium
Joseph Herbert started telling jokes in Las Vegas in 1989 and spent two decades playing rooms no camera visited. In 2026 he co-sold a 70,000-seat American football stadium, put his sixth Netflix hour on screen and is still on the road in November.
Misawa to the Strip
Joseph Glenn Herbert was born on 2 June 1971 at Misawa Air Base in northern Japan, to an American airman and a Filipino mother. The family settled in Washington state, where he grew up, and he later went to Las Vegas for UNLV and left without finishing in order to chase stand-up. The stage name dates from 1989, the same year the act started: an aunt calling him in to dinner with "Jo Ko, eat!" — ko being the Tagalog possessive — which he misheard as Koy and kept.
That makes 2026 his thirty-seventh year on stage, and most of the first two decades were spent in rooms no television camera visited. The Las Vegas years built the material that still carries the show: family, delivered loud, with his mother as the recurring lead character and the distance between a Filipino household's rules and an American one as the engine.
Comedy Central supplied the first platforms of any size, Don't Make Him Angry in 2009 and Lights Out in 2012. A seat on the Chelsea Lately panel from 2009 to 2014 put him into American living rooms several nights a week without ever making him the draw; the ticket-selling came later, and slowly.
Five Netflix hours and a feature
The Netflix run began with Live from Seattle in 2017, then Comin' in Hot in 2019, In His Elements in 2020, Live from the LA Forum in 2022 and Live from Brooklyn in 2024 — five hours in seven years, each one filmed bigger than the last. Across that stretch he moved from clubs to theatres to arenas and into the Pollstar and Billboard top ten for grossing stand-up acts, a bracket he has stayed in since.
Film and television followed the touring rather than driving it. Easter Sunday, released in 2022, was built around a Filipino American family at a holiday table and remains the project he is most often asked about by Filipino audiences. He appeared in Haunted Mansion in 2023 and voiced a part in the animated Leo the same year. He also hosts a podcast, The Koy Pond with Jo Koy, which mostly consists of riffing with other comics.
The through-line is that the act was never built for a network. It was built for a room, and the specials are recordings of what already worked in the room.
The Globes, and the year after
On 7 January 2024 he hosted the 81st Golden Globe Awards, and the monologue failed in public and at length. Reviewers found the punchlines dated or obvious and said almost none of them landed. Koy has since acknowledged that the reaction hurt while maintaining that he was glad he took the job.
What is notable about the two and a half years since is that the live business did not flinch. The arena dates kept selling, the specials kept being commissioned, and the most ambitious night of his career was booked for fourteen months after the Globes rather than cancelled because of them. For a comic whose audience was built face to face rather than through broadcast approval, a bad awards night turned out to be a bad awards night.
Stockton, January 2026
He taped his sixth Netflix special over two nights at Adventist Health Arena in Stockton, California, on 16 and 17 January 2026. The venue choice was the point: Stockton's Little Manila district is one of the oldest Filipino American neighbourhoods in the United States, and the crowd on tape is a hometown one for that community as much as for him.
Blue in the Face premiered globally on Netflix on 15 September 2026, directed and executive produced by Shannon Hartman. The comic material is the usual register — a dental procedure that goes badly wrong, being sacked from McDonald's — but the spine of the hour is loss. It is built around the stepfather who raised him, a military veteran, and Koy has been direct about what the set is for: "It's my last goodbye to him." In interviews around the release he described the hour as a tribute rather than a themed experiment, and reviewers picked out the physical comedy and the fact that the sentiment is carried by stories rather than by speeches.
It is the first of his hours where the ending is not a punchline, and the first he has taped in a city that functions as a family address rather than a market.
Seventy thousand at SoFi
On 21 March 2026 Koy and Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias co-headlined SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, billed as "One Night Only!" and announced as the first stand-up show the stadium had ever staged. It sold out, roughly 70,000 seats, and became the largest stand-up audience assembled in Los Angeles.
The running order was closer to a festival than a comedy night. Around an hour of openers came first — Matt Golightly, Joey Guila, Alfred Robles, Martin Moreno, who marked his 58th birthday on stage, and the ventriloquist Jeff Dunham. Iglesias went on at about 8pm after a filmed cold open and a smoke-machine entrance. After an interval, Koy walked out disguised as a member of the dance crew Jabbawockeez before revealing himself, worked through pet material and a long passage about the room itself — "This place is full, all the way to the top, people laughing and having a good time" — and brought on Babyface and Jamie Foxx for unannounced musical turns.
Two Latino and Filipino American comics filling a stadium without a broadcast special to promote it is the clearest available measure of where this part of the comedy business now sits.
Where he is in November 2026
The touring year ran in two named legs. Spring dates went out under Just Being Koy, including a theatre night at Hershey in Pennsylvania on 23 April 2026, with European shows over the summer. The fall leg, announced in April and sold under Koy Meets World, opened in Kansas City on 13 September and runs to 14 November, taking in Houston, San Antonio, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Sacramento and Spokane, where he played the First Interstate Center for the Arts on 31 October with tickets at $50.75 to $155.50. San Diego, Maui and Ontario sold out. Oakland Arena closes the North American stretch on 13 November, and Honolulu follows.
Three other things have landed this year. He was announced in July for the Hollywood Walk of Fame's Class of 2027, alongside Nicole Scherzinger — a pairing Filipino outlets covered as a double first. He hosts Martin Lawrence Presents: Pass Tha' Mic, a showcase series for rising stand-ups created by Lawrence and Stacy Lyles, taped in Albuquerque in late August. And he voices a part in the DreamWorks animated feature Forgotten Island, dated for cinemas on 25 September 2026.
Not all of it has been uncomplicated. His appearance at the Riyadh Comedy Festival in 2025 drew criticism from human rights organisations over Saudi Arabia's record, as it did for most of the bill.
The show, now
The current run is billed as Koy Meets World and plays theatres and arenas, with doors at 7pm and an 8pm start at both the Spokane and Oakland dates. The shape is conventional and deliberately so: a support comic first, then Koy alone on an open stage with a microphone, no video wall gimmicks or sketch breaks. There is no fixed touring opener — the slot rotates city by city, often filled by local acts or rising Filipino and Asian American comics. The material is drawn largely from Blue in the Face and the writing around it, which means the set now carries the stepfather and bereavement passages as well as the louder family bits, and the Spokane preview framed remembering and loss as the tour's running theme. He still works the crowd between written sections and still runs the call-and-response that regulars expect. Demand is the clearest review: San Diego, Maui and Ontario sold out on this leg, and the stadium night in March proved the draw at a scale no comic had tested in Los Angeles before.
