Massafra, Saints Mob and the name change

Kid Yugi is Francesco Stasi, born on 14 April 2001 in Massafra, a small town in the province of Taranto in Puglia. He started rapping while still at school inside the Saints Mob collective, active between 2018 and 2021, and worked through two earlier aliases — Abisso, then Lil Killua — before settling on the name he uses now in 2022.

The single that changed the trajectory was 'Grammelot', the track that opened the Kid Yugi project proper and brought him to the attention of Thaurus Music, the label that signed him. From there the pace has not really slowed: a debut album in November 2022, a chart-topping second record in March 2024, and a third at the end of January 2026.

The geography matters to the writing. Massafra sits close enough to Taranto that the steelworks are part of the landscape, and industrial pollution in the city is a recurring subject in his verses, alongside bereavement, family and street violence. So is reading: he has said that Dostoevsky's 'Crime and Punishment', which he picked up at thirteen and only half understood, convinced him that words carry more force than the people using them. Francesco Guccini, the band CCCP and the Japanese film-maker Shinya Tsukamoto sit in the same set of references.

Three albums, and a sales record

'The Globe' arrived in November 2022 and went platinum, with three of its tracks certified gold — a strong debut rather than a phenomenon. The phenomenon was 'I nomi del diavolo', released in March 2024, which entered the FIMI albums chart at number one and produced 'Lilith', 'Ex Angelo' and 'Denaro'. It was still selling nearly two years later: by early 2026 the label was counting more than 98 weeks on the chart, and by September 2026 the record had been certified six times platinum.

'Anche gli eroi muoiono' followed on 30 January 2026 and broke the commercial ceiling. It shifted more than 67,000 copies in seven days, the largest opening week for any album in the Italian streaming era, and took number one on both the FIMI/NIQ albums chart and the chart for physical formats. Platinum came inside the first week, double platinum after roughly a month and over 100,000 copies, and triple platinum by the time the autumn tour was announced as sold out.

The guest list is a map of Italian rap in the mid-2020s: Shiva, Tutti Fenomeni, Tony Boy, Anna, Papa V, Nerissima Serpe, Rrari dal Tacco, Simba La Rue and Artie 5ive, the last on 'Bullet Ballet'. The rollout was staged as a death: the sleeve shows Stasi laid out in a coffin lined with red silk, the trailer featured the actor Filippo Timi, and a documentary carried the title 'Genesi e ascesa di un Anti-Idolo'.

Killing off the hero

Stasi has been explicit about what the funeral imagery is for. Speaking around the release in January 2026, he said he had decided to kill himself off because the album's central argument is that today's hero is an ordinary person, and that the dagger on the artwork is an aesthetic choice rather than a threat. The wider target, as he put it to Billboard Italia the same week, is what he calls the great lie of the century: a meritocracy in which a person's worth is measured by economic output.

He is also uncomfortable with the position the sales have put him in. 'People consider me a superhero, but expectations destroy me,' he told ANSA on 27 January 2026, and he has described the collision between his shyness and the visibility as a form of continuous self-flagellation. In the same period he ruled out Sanremo, saying he had no wish to compete as a vocalist and felt protective of the material. One of the album's quietest tracks, 'Per te che lotto', is written for his sister while she was in hospital.

Critics were not unanimous. OndaRock gave the record six out of ten, arguing that the mix of violent trap and introspective, politically pointed writing dilutes rather than deepens it — an appreciable album that does not fully use his evident potential. The same review singled out 'Mostro', built without drums, the old-school guitar of 'Tristano e Isotta', the pacifist turn of 'Per il sangue versato' and 'Bullet Ballet', and conceded that when he is left alone to dig into his own pain he has a pen unlike almost anyone else in Italy. Elsewhere on aggregator sites the split is sharper still, with some listeners calling it his weakest record and others his most personal.

Where he stands in September 2026

The numbers his camp was publishing in September 2026 run to 26 platinum and 20 gold certifications and more than 2.5 billion streams, up from 21 and 16 in February. He is on Thaurus Music with Underdog Music, distributed through the Universal Music Italia system and Virgin.

The live business has scaled to match. Tickets for the 'Anche gli eroi muoiono' arena tour, promoted by Vivo Concerti, went on sale online at 2pm on 12 February 2026 and in outlets from 17 February. By 10 September the promoter was reporting that every date had sold out, and the run had grown from the six shows originally announced to nine: Milan alone takes three consecutive nights at the Unipol Forum on 8, 9 and 10 October, and Rome a second date at the Palazzo dello Sport on 23 October.

Before the arenas he spent the summer on festival stages, starting in Bellinzona in Switzerland on 5 June and working through Sequoie Music Park in Bologna on 18 June, San Benedetto del Tronto on 26 June, the Flowers Festival at Collegno on 30 June, Catania on 3 July, the Reggia di Caserta on 5 July, Genoa on 13 July, Gallipoli on 28 July and Red Valley in Olbia on 14 August. He appeared at the Arena di Verona on 18 September for the BYD Music Awards.

The arena test

The autumn run opens at the Palaflorio in Bari on 27 September 2026, then goes to the Padova fairground on 30 September, the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome on 6 October, the Unipol Forum in Assago on 8, 9 and 10 October, the Palapartenope in Naples on 13 October, the Mandela Forum in Florence on 15 October and back to Rome on 23 October.

It is his first tour at this size, and the step up is considerable: he was playing clubs such as the Vog in Seriate as recently as 13 June 2026. The summer sets were long and hit-heavy rather than staged as theatre, so the open question for Bari onwards is how much of the album's funeral apparatus — the coffin, the anti-idol framing, the documentary — makes it onto an arena stage, and whether the quieter material holds a room of that size. The settled arena setlist will only be known after the opening night.
