King Pigeon: the Munich four-piece who spent a decade getting to a debut album
Formed in Munich's Giesing district and named after a yoga pose, King Pigeon spent ten years on EPs and club bills before a run of 2026 singles. On 21 November 2026 they finally launch a debut album, Endlessly Boiling Water, at the Ampere.
Giesing, a yoga pose and a slow start
King Pigeon came together in Munich in the mid-2010s, four players from the Giesing district who met through the city's music events and went into a practice room rather than straight onto a stage. Their Local Heroes profile dates the meeting to early 2015; other accounts put the founding a year earlier, in 2014. Either way the band's first public phase was demos and small gigs, and the line-up settled as a conventional four-piece: vocals and guitar, second guitar, bass, drums.
The name is not a bird joke. It comes from the king pigeon yoga position, chosen because yoga is about holding a balance — which is how the band described what they were after musically, a point of equilibrium between playing around and being ambitious, between the records they grew up on and whatever they were making that week. In practice that meant guitars with blues and funk in them, a bass pushed well forward, and drums doing more than keeping time. One early write-up reached for Jimi Hendrix meeting Arctic Monkeys, which says more about the guitar tone than the songwriting.
The band's own framing from the start was about the room rather than the record: the stated aim was to move an audience both emotionally and physically. Early support slots followed, including an opening for Who Killed Bruce Lee, plus Munich radio play on M94.5 and festival appearances around the region.
Two EPs, a film-school video and a cocktail
The first EP, Sonic Fields, is still up on the band's Bandcamp page alongside everything that followed. It was built on the playful indie sound of the 2000s and it is the most straightforwardly guitar-driven thing in the catalogue.
The second EP, About The Stock Life, arrived in early 2018 and moved towards synthesiser textures and more atmospheric guitar work. Its single, The Stock Life, got a video made with students at the HFF, Munich's film school, directed by Lenny Heidtmann. Speaking to M94.5 in an interview published on 30 October 2018, the band were blunt about their own role: the script came from Lenni at the HFF and from Ferdi Dankesreiter, the school supplied the kit, and the band contributed very little beyond turning up. In the same conversation they said they had grooved in with each other and were working more efficiently on the next batch of material, album or EP undecided.
That autumn also produced the oddest line in the band's history: a King Pigeon cocktail — gentian, fresh peach and gin — served at a Munich bar rather than at their own gigs. The gigs themselves were steady local work, including the DigitalAnalog festival at the Gasteig on 20 October 2018 and a Campus For Change charity night at Cord Club four days later.
By Your Side, and the arrival of the house piano
The decisive shift came with the 2020s. A pair of singles, Higher and Heatwaves, landed in 2023, and in April 2024 the four-track EP By Your Side pulled funk, pop and disco into the band's indie frame. Its subject matter was self-presentation on social media and the doubt that comes with it, carried on danceable basslines, clean guitars and synth solos kept relatively free of digital processing. A single, Winners, and a Mathis remix of it also appeared in 2024.
By Your Side was the first King Pigeon release to travel beyond Munich. It passed 150,000 streams through Spotify curator playlists including Indie Brandneu — modest numbers in absolute terms, but a different order of magnitude from the band's EP-release-at-the-Milla years. The records are made with producer Willy Löster, whose credits include BRUCKNER and LaBrassBanda.
More Loss of Control, released in June 2025, is where the current version of the band becomes audible. A house piano sits in the chorus, the vocals are stacked, and the arrangement leans on sequencers, bongos and shakers as much as guitars. The lyrical theme is escape from obligation, the song as a temporary release. At the time it was billed as the first single from an LP due in 2026, which is exactly what it turned out to be.
The 2026 singles run and a debut album
The album campaign has been unhurried. Soft Revelation, a two-and-a-half-minute track, followed in July 2026. Moonlight came after it. The most recent release is 1111, a two-track single issued on 23 October 2026 — a week before this was written, and three and a half weeks before the album show.
The debut album is called Endlessly Boiling Water, and the band's own description of it is more interesting than most press copy. The subject is tension that persists after it should logically have dissipated, which produces a constant swing between intimacy and being overwhelmed, between closeness and eruption, between an inner and an outer world. The title is a stated physical contradiction: water that boils endlessly without ever evaporating.
Sonically the venue copy sets out what has changed since 2018. The indie core is still there, but it now carries driving house pianos, crunchy basslines and funk grooves. The band's Brazilian singer brings Latin influences and a second language into the material, which the band characterise as warmer and more direct, with new tonal colours. That is a significant line-up change for a group that spent its first decade as four men from Giesing, and it is the main reason the 2026 singles do not sound like the EPs.
Where they stand at the end of October 2026
King Pigeon remain a Munich band in the literal sense: every date on their public schedule over the past two years has been in Munich. Recent shows were the Theatron MusikSommer in the Olympiapark on 15 August 2025, a free open-air slot at 19:50; the Milla Club on 22 September 2025; and Live Evil at Fat Cat on Rosenheimer Straße on 11 December 2025, a double bill with the dream-pop band Clear Coast at 20:00 for €22.70.
Two dates stand immediately ahead. On Wednesday 11 November 2026 they share the bill at the Kranhalle at Feierwerk, Hansastraße 39, with the British band King No-One, from 20:00 — a 600-capacity room. Then on Saturday 21 November 2026 comes the album-release party at the Ampere in the Muffatwerk, Zellstraße 4: doors at 19:00, music at 19:30, €20.50 including fees, promoted by sun king music.
No national press reviews of the current live show have been published, which is the honest state of things for a band at this level. What exists is listing-page framing and the streaming traction: a run of singles that have each been playlisted, and promoters in two of Munich's better mid-size clubs willing to put the album launch in a ticketed room three weeks after the last single.
On stage
The live proposition has changed shape along with the records. The 18 January 2025 show at the Milla — doors 19:00, music 20:00, €18 in advance and €23 on the door, with concessions — was a three-act indie night: King Pigeon alongside Clear Coast, four self-producing musicians from southern Germany working out of home studios, and Lisl, then a 23-year-old from Würzburg whose solo material had reached BBC Music Introducing.
The December 2025 pairing with Clear Coast was promoted as a double concert of atmosphere, groove and emotion, with King Pigeon's half described as danceable indie-pop between synth and disco. That is a fair description of what the current set does: the guitars are cleaner than they were in 2018, the bass and the house piano carry the dance sections, and the slower material is where the vocal stacking does the work.
The show, now
The next two King Pigeon shows are both in Munich. On Wednesday 11 November 2026 they share a bill with the British band King No-One at the Kranhalle at Feierwerk, Hansastraße 39, from 20:00, in a room that holds around 600. On Saturday 21 November 2026 they headline the album-release party for Endlessly Boiling Water at the Ampere in the Muffatwerk, Zellstraße 4, with doors at 19:00, music at 19:30 and tickets at €20.50 including fees, promoted by sun king music. The venue's framing for that night is the album heard in an emotional extreme state, just short of boiling over. The set draws on the 2026 singles — 1111, Moonlight, Soft Revelation — plus More Loss of Control from June 2025 and the By Your Side EP, so the shape is danceable indie-pop built on clean guitars, a forward bass, house piano in the choruses, and sequencers, bongos and shakers alongside the live drums, with slower stacked-vocal material between the dance sections. Recent Munich dates give a sense of format and scale rather than spectacle: a free 19:50 open-air slot at the Theatron MusikSommer in the Olympiapark on 15 August 2025, the Milla Club on 22 September 2025, and a co-headline double bill with the dream-pop band Clear Coast at Live Evil, Fat Cat on 11 December 2025 at 20:00 for €22.70, billed as a night of atmosphere, groove and emotion. The January 2025 Milla show ran as a three-act indie bill with Clear Coast and the Würzburg songwriter Lisl, doors 19:00 and music 20:00, €18 advance and €23 on the door with concessions. No national press reviews of the current show have been published; the available evidence of audience pull is the EP's 150,000-plus streams through Spotify curator playlists including Indie Brandneu, and the move up to ticketed mid-size Munich clubs for the album launch.
