Out of a Viennese jukebox musical

The four singers who tour as Insieme did not meet on a concert platform. They met in the cast of Ti Amo, the Wiener Metropol's Italian-hits stage comedy, a title the house kept bringing back until a fourth instalment played there into the spring of 2022, with the run closing on 2 April that year. Christian Deix was in it twice over — as the cleaner Traudl and as co-musical director alongside Max Hagler, with the Max Hagler Band in the pit. Erik Arno and René Velázquez-Díaz were both in the ensemble. A notice published on 18 February 2022 read the show as an unrestrained stage party that spread good cheer from the first bars, and put its success down to the tunes rather than the plot mechanics.

That verdict describes what the band took away with them. Insieme formed in 2012 as a spin-off from the same material: the songs, the four voices and an audience that already knew the words, with the book scenes stripped out. The billing settled into La Notte Italiana — Italo Pop Non Stop, sometimes given in German as Die italienische Nacht, and the touring pattern settled into town halls, castle courtyards and open-air stages across Austria rather than the country's concert-hall circuit. Fourteen years on, the four singers are the same four singers.

The four, and what each one brought

Monika Ballwein is the most heavily documented of them. Born in Pyhra in Lower Austria in 1967, she has worked as a professional singer since the age of sixteen, studied jazz singing at the Franz Schubert Conservatory and trained in Copenhagen in Complete Vocal Technique, becoming the first teacher authorised to teach the method in Austria. She has been involved with five Austrian Eurovision Song Contest entries, four of them on stage as a backing singer, and coached Conchita Wurst, who won the contest in 2014. Austrian television viewers know her from the coaching and judging side of Starmania, Helden von Morgen, Die große Chance and Popstars. She set up her own academy in 2004 and published a book on singing, Move your Voice, in 2006.

Christian Deix comes from the musical theatre side and carries the arranging and musical-direction end of the group, as the Ti Amo credits show. René Velázquez-Díaz is billed as a Mexican tenor and supplies the operatic material, which is the single thread that gets the whole enterprise filed under classical by some listings. Pietro Erik Arno, promoted as the Italo bard of the four, is the native Italian voice.

Behind them stands a backing band called Die Fabelhaften Pizza-Boys, a name that sets the register of the evening before a note is played. Promotional copy for the current run leans on the same formula each time: four personalities, four voices, passion and energy with a measure of humour.

Italo pop with an aria or two

The repertoire arc is consistent across venue listings for the 2026 run. It runs from Al Bano and Adriano Celentano through Laura Pausini and Gianna Nannini to Eros Ramazzotti, and then reaches across to opera-aria material associated with Luciano Pavarotti. The songs named in reports of past nights are the ones the audience can be relied on to sing: Volare, Azzurro, Gloria, Gente di mare, Ti amo.

That mixture is why the act turns up under a classical heading and also under pop. Nothing about the evening is a recital — the arrangements are for a rock-shaped band, and the operatic numbers function as the two or three big set-pieces inside a pop programme rather than as its spine. Listings describe the blend plainly as pop, rock, classical influences and humorous elements.

The group also keeps three configurations of the same material in circulation: a straight greatest-hits programme, an unplugged acoustic evening, and a harder rock-leaning version. Their own promotional line is that no two concerts are alike, and the Traun promoter made the same point when selling two consecutive nights in September 2026 — the programme shifts from show to show, which is how a venue justifies asking the same audience back on the second evening.

Where they stand now: nine dates across two summers

Nine dates are currently on sale, spanning 13 May 2026 to 19 June 2027. The 2026 leg opens indoors at the Stadthalle in Ternitz on 13 May at 20.00, moves to the Schloßbergbühne Kasematten in Graz on 27 May at 20.00, and reaches the Rathaussaal in Telfs in Tyrol on 14 June at 19.00.

The high summer belongs to the open-air stages. The group returns to the Wolkenturm at Schloss Grafenegg on 29 July 2026 at 20.00, billed as La Notte Italiana — Italo Pop Nonstop, Best of Part IX, and presented there as a guest promotion by the Cayenne marketing agency rather than by the festival itself. On 8 August 2026 they play Schloss Weitra, a date the venue is already advertising as sold out. Two nights follow at the Spinnerei in Traun on 11 and 12 September 2026, both at 20.00, and the autumn date is the Großer Saal of the Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt on 25 September 2026 at 19.30.

The tour then carries into a second year, with the Graz Kasematten again on 20 May 2027, the AktivPark 4222 on 19 June 2027, and a further Wolkenturm booking at Grafenegg on 7 July 2027. The Grafenegg residency is the clearest measure of where the act sits: a numbered annual return to a 1,700-seat outdoor stage better known for symphony programmes, sustained across enough summers to have reached a ninth edition.

The Grafenegg habit predates the current run. A report from the Wolkenturm night of 2 August 2024 has the audience out of their seats from the opening number and calling for repeated encores, with Volare, Azzurro, Gloria and Gente di mare among the songs played, and a return date for the following July already announced with an early-booking discount running to 20 August 2024.

The show as it runs now

The format is fixed and unfussy. Listings for the 2026 and 2027 dates give running times of roughly two hours — 19.30 to 21.30 at the theatre bookings, 20.00 to 22.00 at the Graz Kasematten — with no support act announced at any venue and no guest billing beyond the four singers and the Pizza-Boys.

Staging is what the room provides. At Grafenegg and Weitra that means the architecture does the work; indoors at Wiener Neustadt and Ternitz it is a band set-up and four front-line singers. The promoters sell the evening on holiday association, promising warm-night and beach imagery and a pull towards Italy, and on the assumption that every number in the set is one the room can join. Reports of past nights bear that out more than any critical judgement does: the recurring detail is the audience standing early and staying up, and the encores being demanded rather than merely scheduled.
