The Laughing Tomcat: how a donation-box Tuesday in Prenzlauer Berg became a two-city comedy calendar

Lachkater is a small Berlin comedy outfit that books mixed stand-up bills in a Prenzlauer Berg restaurant, a wooden amphitheatre on Tempelhofer Feld and a Cologne cellar club. Its Cologne run now stretches to January 2027, and four of its late-summer nights there sold out before the season turned.

A cat's name and a Kreuzberg company number

Lachkater translates roughly as "laughing tomcat", and the joke is worked hard: the operator's own copy talks about the venues where "the Lachkater miaows", and sign-offs read "Cheers & Meow". Behind the pun sits an ordinary German small company. The imprint on lachkater.com names Lachkater UG (haftungsbeschränkt), registered at Ratiborstr. 15 in 10999 Berlin — Kreuzberg, a couple of canal blocks from Görlitzer Park — with Nora Yogeshwar listed as managing director and as the point of contact for content. The same name carries the photo credit on the Cologne listings.

The beginnings were modest and recent enough to be documented. A Berlin listings entry for the Tuesday night at Al Hamra on 23 July 2024 has the show starting at 20:30 with free admission and a donation requested, pitching itself as a chance to watch comedians work material out before they take it to bigger rooms. Two years on, the same Tuesday slot at the same address — Raumerstraße 16, 10437 Berlin — starts half an hour earlier at 20:00 and sells advance tickets from €15.63. The pitch has not changed much; the economics have.

Three rooms, three different evenings

The programme is built on three fixed venues rather than a tour. Al Hamra in Prenzlauer Berg holds the weekly Tuesday bill at 20:00, close enough to U Eberswalder Straße and S Prenzlauer Allee that the listings quote the walk in hundreds of metres. The Luftschloss on Tempelhofer Feld — a large circular wooden amphitheatre reached across the disused runways — takes the open-air season at 19:30, running from May to September. The Goldfinger Club at Friesenstraße 54 in Cologne, which the organisers describe as three minutes from Friesenplatz, runs at 19:00.

The three are deliberately unalike. The Tuesday room is the workshop: six selected comedians, in the operator's framing a mix of the most in-demand professionals and the rising names still being kept quiet. Berlin's own listing for the 20 October 2026 date puts it at six to seven acts. The open-air season is the showcase, sold on golden-hour drinks, a bar with beer, wine, cocktails and snacks, and a recommendation to turn up half an hour early. Cologne is the expansion — a second city for a format that was, until recently, entirely a Berlin proposition.

The calendar is the body of work

A promoter of this size leaves no discography, so the record is the schedule, and Lachkater's is unusually legible because the site publishes its own date tables. The 2026 open-air season at the Luftschloss ran to eight dates: 23 May, 19 June, 10 and 26 July, 9, 14 and 29 August, and 4 September, with the season formally closing on 30 September. Two of those carry the organisers' own weather notes — "27 °C and sun" for 10 July, around 30 °C and part-sun for 9 August — and 4 September is flagged as rain, with the show going ahead and the audience told to dress warm. Umbrellas and blankets are kept on site; the stated policy is that the show happens in any weather short of a severe storm warning.

The Cologne run is the larger commitment: 35 dates from 28 August 2026 through to 29 January 2027, mostly Thursdays to Saturdays, including 25 and 26 December and New Year's Day. The Berlin Tuesday series was paused until 9 June 2026 before restarting, and Berlin's listings currently carry the Al Hamra run from 22 September to 8 December 2026. Tickets across all three rooms are sold through Universe, with the booking widget defaulting to a two-hour slot.

House rules, stated out loud

What distinguishes Lachkater from the general run of mixed-bill nights is how much of its booking policy is written down. The Cologne listing states the aim of keeping line-ups mixed and of giving greater visibility to female comedians, who the organisers put at under ten per cent of the scene. It also draws a line on tone: the compère brings the audience in if they are willing, nobody is meant to feel uncomfortable, and it is explicitly not a show where the crowd gets seriously roasted. The phrase used is a "good vibes" show, and the accompanying boast is that this is not an assembly-line operation.

Two further rules are unusually blunt. There is a minimum age of 16, and the site says plainly that the reason is not legal but qualitative — children in the room inhibit both audience and comedians — with school groups the sole exception and no refund on advance tickets if the rule is broken. And comedians wanting a spot are pointed at Spotifind rather than an inbox. The school-group exception has grown into its own strand: private bookings for parties of 25 or more, a showroom capacity of 52, and a matching form that pairs two smaller classes into one bill so each pays less.

Where it stands, September 2026

The strongest current signal is Cologne. The four dates of 28 and 29 August and 4 and 5 September 2026 are all marked sold out on the operator's own calendar, and 17 October is flagged as limited. Rausgegangen's page for the 23 October 2026 date lists 28 further shows behind it and 184 saves, with tickets at €26.99 to €31.23 and a 19:00 to 21:00 running time. That is roughly double the Berlin Tuesday price, for a weekend slot in a city with a thinner English-language stand-up circuit than Berlin's.

Berlin, meanwhile, is between seasons. The open-air run finished its last listed date on 4 September and the season closes on 30 September, leaving the weekly Al Hamra bill as the city's steady offering into December. Accessibility is a live caveat in Cologne: the Goldfinger has two halls, only one of them step-free, and which hall a given show uses depends on how well it has sold, so the organisers ask wheelchair users to phone ahead. A free or discounted companion ticket is available.

Audience evidence is thinner than the scheduling evidence. The site runs a reviews carousel built from eight screenshots of guest feedback, introduced with the claim that these are real voices from the audience and not the work of an ad agency, and quotes one 2025 open-air guest calling it the best comedy evening of the summer with a promise to return. Beyond that, no aggregated rating is published, and the acts are named on the open-air page by first name only — Björn, Coco, Daniel, Fred, Marco, Rasmus, Simon — with the line-up for any given night left unannounced.

The format, and its limits

The bet Lachkater is making is that a mixed bill of six or seven short sets, compèred, in a room small enough to feel domestic, beats a single touring headliner on price and on repeat visits. It is a model that depends on churn — new material every week, a rotating cast, a crowd that comes back because the bill is never the same twice. The trade-off is that nothing is guaranteed in advance: no headliner is advertised, and the organisers' own framing concedes that the acts are testing and refining jokes live.

It also remains a German-language operation at heart, which is worth noting in a Berlin scene where English-language stand-up has become the default for visitors. The website, the ticketing flow and the listings all run in German, and the audience-participation element assumes a room that follows the compère.

The show, now

A Lachkater night runs about two hours — the Cologne listing for 23 October 2026 gives 19:00 to 21:00, and the ticketing widget defaults to a two-hour slot across all three rooms. The bill is six selected comedians in Berlin on Tuesdays (the city's own listing says six to seven), mixing established professionals with newer acts, each doing a short set of largely new or in-progress material; no headliner is named in advance. A compère links the sets and will bring the audience into the room if they are willing, but the organisers state flatly that this is a "good vibes" show and not one where the crowd is seriously roasted. Staging is minimal and the rooms are small and domestic by design — the operator's stated venue criterion is "living-room vibes" and a friendly on-site team. There are no support acts in the touring sense; the newer comedians on the bill effectively serve that function. At the Luftschloss open-air season on Tempelhofer Feld the show starts at 19:30 in a circular wooden amphitheatre, with a bar selling beer, wine, cocktails and snacks, an invitation to arrive half an hour early, and a policy of playing through rain — blankets and umbrellas are kept on site, and the 4 September 2026 date went ahead in the wet. Minimum age is 16. In Cologne the Goldfinger has two halls and only one is step-free, with the hall chosen by how well the night has sold, so wheelchair users are asked to call ahead; a free or discounted companion ticket is offered. Published audience feedback is limited to the operator's own carousel of eight guest-review screenshots and a quoted 2025 open-air guest calling it the best comedy evening of the summer; the Cologne date on 23 October 2026 has 184 saves on Rausgegangen, and four Cologne nights in late August and early September 2026 sold out.
